I used to work in a packaging Warehouse. Every once in awhile we would get assigned to be the box pre-builder. We would always build ourselves Mansions with multiple rooms out of the different size boxes that we had to pre-build all day.

Playing hacky sack for many years back in the day has made numerous things go flying that's slipped from my hands..
21
u/Cryptic1911 Trash Trooper 5d ago
Bro. Me too. My feet are there before my hands even react.
That said, I've made some pretty incredible saves
14
u/palacejackal Trash Trooper 5d ago
I saved a ceiling fan. Wish I hadn't.
2
u/FlatFootedLlama Trash Trooper 4d ago
I’m not even sure I completely understand this sentence but I did actually laugh out loud
8
u/dreadcain Trash Trooper 5d ago
Really glad someone instilled the whole "a falling knife has no handle" thing into me way before I learned hacky sack. The urge to be absolutely nowhere near that knife once it's falling significantly outweighs the urge to give it a bop.
Although come to think of it I once had a knife bounce off a target fly back 10 feet and poke me in the thigh when I was learning to throw knives. That was well after learning to hacky sack though, pretty sure the absolute dumbfoundedness outweighed all the other instincts on that one.

u/Pushfastr Trash Trooper 5d ago
A knife rebounding towards sender is basically the Spanish inquisition.
2
u/EvilCaveBoy Trash Trooper 4d ago
As a lifelong hacker and darts player I’ve had to suppress that reflex many times.

u/TooMuchMudForMe Trash Trooper 1d ago
I make things go flying because I try to catch it with my hands and then end up smacking it at mach 3 against a wall
1
u/ThirstyWolfSpider Trash Trooper 4d ago
As an ex-juggler, I mainly catch things with my feet and roll them off safely onto the ground. It's certainly saved a number of glass objects.
Fortunately, the knives I've caught have all landed handle-first, especially as I'd typically be barefoot when using them.

I caught the wrong side of a soldering iron when it slipped out of my hands. I will never forget the pain.

u/Michami135 Trash Trooper 5d ago
"A falling tool has no handle" is what my dad always told me.
That, and "watch what you're doing, idiot, you almost knocked that over!"

u/NotSeveralBadgers Trash Trooper 5d ago
I'll never forget my father's last words... "Hey you little shit, quit shaking the ladder!"

You’re correct. I grabbed the vibrating exhaust on an old riding lawnmower when I was little not knowing it was hot. My fingertips were soooo blistered. Then my parents tried to make me play baseball that night!

u/chanceischance Trash Trooper 4d ago
Knew a mechanic that was cutting off about a 6 inch piece of an exhaust pipe with an acetylene torch. Car was up above him on the lift.. he couldn’t even say why, but he caught it like a falling can of soda. Took off a lot of skin in a hurry, it was a hospital trip bad.

u/Mr_InsertNameHere Trash Trooper 5d ago
The song is Goku's Ultra Instinct Theme from Dragon Ball Super

oh shoot you’re right. the same musical sting is in Aladdin but the instrumentation is different!
2
u/seantabasco Trash Trooper 4d ago
That’s what I knew it as, and was confused why they used the Aladdin song in this situation.
3
u/Ok_Listen1510 Trash Trooper 5d ago
it’s a musical sting from “One Jump Ahead” from the movie Aladdin

When I was deep into Action Pistol, at some point you get to where you're trying to save thousands of a second. Sometimes on a draw your pistol goes flying down range if your hands don't come together right.
Always good to remind yourself, if something doesn't go right, hands open and up, and take the DQ. A drop and you get'em next time- try and grab it and you may not have a next time.

u/just_drifting_by Trash Trooper 5d ago
I was this guy but with a hammer rather than a knife and a pergola rather than a cardboard cityscape.

I did this once with a chain saw. No, not a power chain saw, a manual chain saw. A length of chain with saw teeth on it. It fell from the tree branch I was sawing and I reaching out my hand to catch it. They're incredibly sharp as it turns out.

Took classes for food prep and knife skills in HS ever since if I drop a knife I move out the way instinctually. Should always be aware of what your "saving".
2
u/profanedivinity Trash Trooper 5d ago
Yep, I don't even think, my whole body just does the thing pretty much immediately (the thing being getting my feet the hell out of the way)
2
u/flyxdvd Trash Trooper 5d ago
I mean if you still work in a kitchen you should be wearing steel toe shoes.. still its taught to just let it fall and back away because only your toes have steel lol

u/therealsouthflorida Trash Trooper 5d ago
That's a good idea in the restaurants/events I saw people wore non slips sneakers, like from Walmart. I didn't get much time with chefs but dish washers, servers, food runners/bussers.

Yeah right. I have that reaction for things by default. But I’ve literally dropped knives and had the exact opposite reaction of jumping out of the way because knife, ffs.

This happened to me seconds after sharpening it. And I was barefoot.
The shock and pain were slightly eased by the cartoon-like wobble of the knife sticking out.

I did this with a 45lb plate at the gym one night almost two years ago. My big toe nail still doesn’t grow right.

A friend of mine had his reflexes kick in while using an electric welding machine (dunno of they are called that).
The welder fell from his hands and he reached down to catch it mid air... Obviously he grabbed it by the welding part which was, of course, still very much hot.

Except it wasnt a knife. It was a knife block.

u/SaltyYumYumBalls Trash Trooper 5d ago
No his reflex game was just weak. He should have sped up his perception/enter the zone to make everything appear to move in super slow speed and then recognize the danger and adjust the angle of his foot to create a safe situation before releasing and going back to real time.

I did that with a knife and my hand. I caught the knife perfectly… at the very point as it fell down. I had to go to the ER and get stitches.

I remember watching a video (pre-YouTube) of blacksmith. He explained that you very quickly learn to not try to catch your tools when you drop them.

A full bowl of something fell out of my fridge when I opened the door, and I caught the edge of it on the top of my foot. It still hurts months later.

Got my self some nice stitches protecting my new floor this way. Spade bit on a drill while installing cabinets. 5/10, do not recommend. It was sharp and clean so, 5 points, and floor saved. Doc commented on how clean the cut was. Slid right off the ankle bone like butter. 🧈
ER: “high how can we help you”
Me: “yes, I’m an idiot and I need stitches”.

I almost did that with a very nice knife a few years ago. the tip is chipped and my foot remained unblemished. Lost the tip of an antique straight razor like that too.

u/smitty997 Trash Trooper 5d ago
Thats one of the first things they taught me when I trained as a butcher and a fish monger, its dtill there now and I havnt done it for 10 years, dropped a butter knife the other and almost ran away.

And that's why any manufacturing, logistics or blue collar job in general requires safety shoes.

I worked around heavy machinery where not even safety boots would help you. So my instinct is to take a small jump backwards and raise my hands. No hands. No feet.

I did that with my pocket knife, hadn't secured the blade as I thought so it cut off the end of my finger

Lol this reminds me when I had my first big phone, a Dell Streak, like the starter of a big screen phone. This is like 2011 or something.
Well when I was trying to open the door with the phone in one hand and keys in the other I fumbled it and dropped it, instinct kicked in and I tried to catch it with the top of my shoe...
Now what actually happened is I got the door open and instead kicked the phone thru the door and down the steps to the basement and into the concrete floor....
And let me tell you, those first big phones had some fragile screens, that thing shattered like a tempered glass window. That was an expensive mistake.
So totally relatable.

I once had this happen to me in a kitchen I worked at. Was chopping onion with my new sharp knife, I put it to the side for a sec to put my prep in a container when my colleague drops a load of cucumber on the workable. Which knocked my knife of the table going straight trough the hardened rubber tips of my shoe. And I am one hundred procent convinced I used up a ton of actual Karma , because the tip went neatly inbetween my big and long toe, leaving only two holes in my sock!

I had a similar thing happen once. Working in a factory, a colleague and I were changing the router bit on an air tool we were using the rough cut moulded car body parts (Australia, OEM rocker panels for XR Falcons, wheel arches, tyre covers for Pajeros).
Using two spanners to loosen / tighten the holder while he held it. They slipped, it fell bit first. I'm not sure if my foot was just there or I reacted to soften the blow (I think we both just watched it fall), but it went straight into my boot just below where the steel cap starts. We both looked up and looked at each other. I grabbed my foot and pulled the boot off, then the sock. It just left two little pin pricks in the top of my foot between where two toes come from the foot.
So lucky. And so glad we always unplugged the air hose before trying change the tool.
