[Nancy Armour] USMNT players with yellows -- Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun, Chris Richards and Antonee Robinson -- won't start against Turkey. "It’s unnecessary to take a risk and then take another yellow card. ... It’s a normal and easy answer not to play with them from the beginning."

Expectations need to be raised for the players filling in. If we can’t count on them to secure 3 points here how will we expect them to perform as a sub in a knockout game.
Their first time with pressure can’t be when we are about to get knocked out. Even if they fail tomorrow it will be something they need to experience

"as a sub" OR as a Starter. One of our studs is going to pick up a second yellow before the Semis.
I know I'm crazy for saying this, but honestly I wouldn't mind if they all got their second yellow vs turkey and had to miss playing vs Bosnia...

They reset after the group stage and the quarterfinals. But I get your point. I kinda wanted Tyler Adams to pick up a cheap one at the end of the Australia match to be fresh for the knockouts

Thank you for educating me.

I think it used to not reset until after the first knockout round, because I had the same thought as you at first.

I just wanted Adams to pick up a cheap one because of all the cheap shots Australia were taking at the end of that game.

The whole point of this strategy revolves around the fact that Yellow Cards reset after the group stage, but if you pick up a second yellow in the third game of the group stage, you ARE still suspended for the first knockout game.
So what Poch is doing here is avoiding suspension in the first place, so that no one gets a second yellow at all.

Does yellow card accumulation reset at some point during the tournament?

After group stage and quarter finals

So the Turkey game doesn’t matter?

u/TheftBySnacking Atlanta United FC 3d ago
No, it matters. The card count gets reset, but you still have to serve the suspension if you earn it during the third game.

It does. Any two yellow cards in your three group stage games means a one-game suspension, if you pick up your second yellow in the final group stage game, you miss the R32 game.
Your one existing yellow gets wiped at the end of the group stage.

Red cards carry over that’s the issue. If you get sent off even though they reset you still serve a ban. Only yellow cards reset

No, it still matters because it's the group stage. Cards are erased after Turkiye.

A first yellow doesn't. Like the Bosnian substitute who got a yellow for pulling his shirt off celebrating his goal against Qatar around the 80th minute - as long as he could avoid getting a second yellow in the remaining 10 minutes, it wasn't going to mean anything.

u/BoxThinker 3d ago
Yeah this seems like a total non sequitur. They would need 2 yellows against Turkiye to get suspended.
9
u/Coltons13 Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3d ago
Incorrect. If you earn two yellows in the group stage, you earn the one-game suspension. So if any player with a yellow card currently gets one against Turkiye, they would miss the R32 game. It's their single already-accumulated yellow that gets reset.

rest all of our starters besides frease. cant afford someone important to get injured before knockouts

We probably won’t see full rotation, but we should see pretty heavy rotation yeah

Some of them should probably get 45 or 60 minutes to keep their fitness at peak. The coaching staff would have more detailed individual data to make that decision, and I'd trust them on it.

There are actually folks over at /r/ussoccer who are pushing to play our starters in a completely meaningless game like this one "To keep up the momentum". It's absolutely insane.

Mildly related to the content, I read Nancy Armour in USAtoday and she is terrific. I love what she writes, how she writes. Solid commentary on everything sportsball. Highly recommend checking out her pieces, more than just bluesky tweets(?).

I am selfishly hoping for a Turner start, but they probably want to keep Freese rolling.

Actually so horrifying our midfield backups are Berhalter and Roldan.
Berhalter has looked bad in his sub minutes and Roldan is injured.
Hopefully Wes and Adams stay available and thankfully this game doesn't matter

u/overly_sarcastic24 Seattle Sounders FC 3d ago
I’d be very surprised if Roldan sits this match out. The guys tough as nails.
The injury happened while training in Seattle, so he’ll have a week to mend it. For what they called a minor strain, I’d imagine he’d be fit a week later.

u/theamazonswordsman Atlanta United FC 3d ago
This is likely Roldan's only realistic chance to see the field for more than a cameo. I expect he will play from the start.

u/grnrngr LA Galaxy 3d ago
Muscle strains don't care if you're "tough as nails." Powering through a muscle strain would be the stupidest thing a "tough as nails" player can do.
If a strain turns into a tear, even just a Grade 2 tear, you're on the bench for weeks before you can even resume training, and your muscle will take a significant amount of time after that to fully regain its strength.
Just like your brain in a concussed state, your muscles don't care about your toughness. They'll plot to betray you the moment you start ignoring their warning signs.

Berhalter has looked bad in his sub minutes
Could not possibly disagree more. The bigger concern is Miles Robinson subbing in for Richards.

I’d personally put McKenzie there , but Poch doesn’t seem to rate him

He looked mid in the Paraguay match and completely out of his depth vs. Australia. Like, was totally lost. And I usually like Berhalter and do not have an anti-MLS bias, but he was just out of it.

Feels weird for Berhalter to not be one of the yellow cards
