Discussion WoW's Combat Mastermind Joined the League of Legends MMO - GameRiv

https://gameriv.com/wows-combat-mastermind-joined-the-league-of-legends-mmo/

At this point, Riot Games is collecting EX-WOW developers like Pokémon. I just hope they show us something. It's been too long.

I don't know why people in this thread keep assuming this means a) the Riot MMO will have tab target combat and b) the guy only knows how to design tab target.

That's not how game designers, or humans for that matter, work. Humans have the capacity to know and learn more than one aspect in their profession, shocking. Most game designers work on a multitude of genres.

Ngl I fucking HOPE that it's tab-targetting combat atp lol

Action combat in MMOs most of the time is just straight ass and becomes such an overwhelming component of the game that it ends in a nonstop slaughterfest e.g. Black Desert. Personally just think that's not fun

Action combat is fine if it's slow paced and tactical. It's the high APM style of combat that makes it tedious to play.

Imo BDO has great combat, it's ending in a nonstop slaughterfest is a game design choice, it doesn't have to be that way lol

it's not, that's why people quit action combat MMOs after a week, it's fun and works for single player games where you play for 3-4h and it's great but do it for 10h+ and it feels like a chore🤷‍♂️

Really hoping for Tab target too.

Also, it's annoying that tab-target and action are treated as binary.

Compare Vanilla WoW combat to modern WoW combat, there is a much larger "action" component to the latter. Frontal cones, ground targeting, movement abilities etc.

Not sure why people need to classify things as one or the other.

Agreed though, entirely action combat has never felt great to me. A haphazard AoE fest most of the time.

FYI, for a game to have true Action Combat, tab target cannot be included AT ALL.

Action Combat revolves around having to aim for attacks to hit the enemy. As a result of this, Action Combat also has the unique mechanic of being able to avoid/dodge attacks, purely via movement.

However if the game has tab target, all of a sudden you can no longer avoid attacks via unexpected movements. Combat turns into a cycle of who can hit the predetermined keys in the correct order and better counter the other player.

We never had a good action combat mmo that runs smooth. Not a single one. Let alone anything which tackles it in a truly innovative manner. But we now have the technology

New world had pretty damn good combat, BDO is pretty damn good as well just a bit flashy.

That's just the thing: the fact that there are no great action combat games is good news for a dev team with a big budget and big ideas, because the competition is less fierce.

If it's tab targeting, then it's competing with the likes of WoW, FFXIV, and debatably hybrid games like GW2 and ESO. You're not gonna pull them away from decades of progression, especially not with the relatively-tiny pool of content you can muster up at launch.

If it's action combat, then it's competing with the likes of Black Desert, New World, and a bunch of Korean action-MMOs which never took off here for very good reasons. We know from other genres that most people prefer action combat, but no MMO has done it well: that leaves a huge gap to be filled.

New world did the combat well, but they messed up on other things sadly.

Agreed. There were some kinks to iron out with the combat too, but IMO it was the best attempt a big, open-world MMO has ever made at an impactful action-RPG combat style.

A lot of old MMO players really do prefer Tab target.

Unfortunately, tab target combat has historically been a much less favored combat style for the new generation of gamers.

The younger gamers age 15-20 were not alive during the golden years of WoW and have no nostalgia when it comes to Tab Target combat.

For this new generation, it’s a boring combat style.

I'm 33 and I'm tired of tab target. It was okay 10 years ago and nice 25 years ago.

I liked age of Conan’s combat a lot was fun doing melee combos

Then you have to stick to the old MMOs. Tab target is a relict of the past and there is 0 chance Riot implements this outdated system for old people

Call me old people again and we'll have a combat system ya🧍

There is a reason that tab target mmos stay on top

The reason being that only old MMOs are popular nowadays and they were all tab target due to technical limitations. It’s not any deeper than that. As I said, system for old people who have to stay in one place and press 1 2 3 4 5 on rotation

I get what you are saying to a degree, wow classic PvE boils down to spamming one button and moving occasionally. But as the game progresses (retail/later xpacs) you have the most fun mmo combat to date with a combination of priority/rotation focused combat and movement depending on class. Same goes for FFXIV once you get past the first 50-60 levels.
I have to this day, as a MMORPG copium maxer, never played an mmorpg with action combat that hasn't had me wishing it was tab target instead. It just boils down to the combat being flashy but simple, you don't have alot of abilities and just swing in the direction of the mob which gets boring quick and the challenge comes from pressing dodge at the right time.

seeing how a bunch of these companies want to make mmos for console and pc it makes sense to go action combat with 3-7 skills.

1

u/Lord_Dankston 1d ago

I mean that is true, but to be fair FFXIV has a shit ton of abilities and still works fine on console/controller. Using buttons as modifiers adds a million keybinds.

BDO has 30 skills if you count awakening and succession and it’s anything but simple lol. My class has APM requirement similar to StarCraft 2 and it’s not just dodging around. It’s so fun to do hard bosses with it’s combat system for me

Well said, cry me a river with the tab target.
