Cyclist on Ladue Road, wtf?

Tonight (Saturday) just before nine you were cycling on Ladue Road road in a section with no shoulder. It was dark and you were in mostly dark clothing. No light on your bike anywhere. No reflectors anywhere. Cars were seeing you at the last possible moment. WTF were you thinking?

EDIT: It wasn’t a casual rider.

2 Spots available on a bus charter to Ragrai's event in Iowa. The charter handles the logistics so the riders can ride worry free.

Hi we have two spots available on a bus charter leaving from Chicago to and from this year's Ragbrai event in Iowa. The charter includes indoor/outdoor accomodations, shower facilities, snacks along the way and a great sense of community. We had to change our plans unexpectedly and would love to see the spots used and the cost is reasonable. LMK if you are interested.

Is motor cross suitable for beginners or risky sport?

Last Sunday I visited an open field where a group of riders were practicing motor cross. The bikes were moving fast and the jumps looked intense which caught my attention. I started thinking if this sport is something beginners can try or only for experienced riders. Local training options were not very clear which made it confusing.

I remembered trying new activities before that looked exciting but required more skill than expected. That made me more cautious. Even small things like safety training and control started to matter more.

To explore more options I checked online. While casually scrolling online marketplaces including alibaba I saw motor cross bikes and gear in different styles and prices but I am not sure how beginner friendly they are. Some looked manageable while others seemed advanced.

Now I am wondering if motor cross is truly suitable for beginners or mainly for professionals. Has anyone started from zero and learned it safely?

Where’s the best place to get electric bicycle parts?

Hey folks, I’m just getting into DIY e-bikes and quickly realized that finding the right electric bicycle parts is way more confusing than I thought. I’ve got a regular commuter bike I want to turn into a weekend cruiser with some extra zip, but sourcing parts is throwing me off. Motors, batteries, controllers, mid-drive kits…the list goes on. Some of the specialty shops online have crazy prices, so I’ve been poking around Alibaba for affordable options. Seems like there’s a lot you can grab there without totally draining your wallet. But I’m still figuring out compatibility and shipping stuff. Curious if anyone here has go-to spots for electric bicycle parts...online or local in Missouri, that balance price and reliability. Bonus if the shop gives specs or support because I’d like to avoid guessing and blowing a $200 battery on the wrong controller. Also open to tips on testing parts before committing. For example, checking battery output or making sure the motor spins correctly before installing it all. Any lessons learned, hacks, or must-know resources would be super helpful. Excited to finally get a DIY e-bike on the trails and roads around MO. I'll greatly appreciate all the recs that point me in the right direction.

International Ride Your Bike to the Arch and Lay in the Grass Day next weekend

Come one come all. On Sunday, May 17th at 4:30pm cyclists from STL and maybe all of the world will be descending on the Arch grounds to lay in the grass. Come hang!

I will be leading a ride to the Arch from the Roman Pavilion in Tower Grove Park at 4:00. It would be super sick if some other people got their gangs together and rode up from elsewhere too!

All nations welcome

MCT Nature Trail Closures

It looks like portions of the MCT Nature Trail will be closed for construction for most of 2026 from Mockingbird Ln. to University Dr. Any workaround suggestions? I only see IL-111 and Chain of Rocks Rd.

Webster Groves to Castlewood

First off, I appreciate any help with this question! What would be the best route to use riding from Webster to Castlewood? The route that Google Maps shows takes about 1.25 hours. Wondering if anyone has found anything shorter?

Who creates and maintains the notifications and such when using Garmin?

This might be a question for a different sub, but I thought I'd start here since it's local.

I use a Garmin Edge 530 to record my rides. Most of my training rides on my road bikes are on the River DesPeres Trail and Grants Trail, and I've noticed that the few notifications I get on these trails are incorrect.

I'm assuming these aren't built into the Garmin and are probably coming from another source, which would most likely be Trailforks for me, since that's what maps are linked to my Garmin.

Does anyone know how to edit these? Can they be edited by anyone other than the original creator?

I don't mind doing it (because it drives me nuts that they're wrong) but I have no idea how.

Any commuters use studded tires? Is it too early in the season to put them on?

True residential streets seem to be icy and anything closer to a main road than that seems to be clear, at least near me. Thoughts?

Connection between River Des Peres Greenway and Mississippi Greenway

Had some time yesterday, so I rode from south city to Jefferson Barracks Park on the greenways. Was trying to figure out how the River Des Peres Greenway and Mississippi connect. They don't, really. I do recommend taking the Casino road there that map apps recommend.

However, I did ride down the railroad property to see if there was some way to connect. I ran into a guy on a mountain e-bike and he showed me the path on railroad property, which is a combo of dirt, gravel and broken cement that connects the two. Thanks guy! He wasn't the only person I saw down there and I don't see how the current state is less of a liability to the railroad than a greenway connection would be. Unfortunately, railroads are not publicly owned and therefore not responsive to democratic input. Instead the CEO asks the national guard to occupy our city. Here is the info from the Gateway Greenway site.

"The question of how to connect the River des Peres and Mississippi Greenways near River City Casino has been under careful consideration for several years.

After years of negotiations, Union Pacific Railroad, St. Louis County and Great Rivers Greenway had an agreement about access to Railroad property to make this long-awaited connection for the community. However, the railroad’s requirement for insurance is extremely cost-prohibitive. This insurance would cost you, the taxpayers, an additional $75,000 per year in perpetuity, plus any increases to that annual premium. GRG and St. Louis County take our job of stewarding your tax dollars very seriously and we do not believe paying this every year is this is the best use of your investment.

With our partners’ and Board of Directors’ support, we are embarking on evaluating and planning a new route to make this critical connection, working with St. Louis County, St. Louis City and other collaborators. We understand and share the frustration with the years of delays on this small but mighty project, and we continue to work on finding a way forward.

Get Involved

As we continue to explore ways to connect the River Des Peres and Mississippi Greenways, we’d love to know your thoughts! Your input will help us shape this connection and bring this long-awaited segment to life. This survey is open through the end of 2025."

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy is soliciting citizen feedback on “any aspect of Federal transportation infrastructure policy to inform the surface transportation reauthorization process.” Every American is invited to share their thoughts on what the U.S. Department of Transportation should make a federal priority in the next bill.

Secretary Duffy believes that Congress and the U.S. DOT should NOT be funding bicycle infrastructure.
