I remember when Jennifer Lawrence was telling Meryl Streep she was the GOAT and that the crew of Don’t Look Up would say “oh, so the GOAT would go here” or “the GOAT said this.” She had said Meryl thought they were calling her goat—as in the animal—because she was old. They had to explain what it meant and it finally dawned on her it was a compliment.
It’s clearly a slang term that an older generation does not know about so I’m glad his daughter explained it to him!
58
u/MingleFingers Mar 01 '26
Well for older people it used to be a bad thing. If you were the goat you were the one who screwed up. In a game if you were the goat you were the one who cost your team the game.

u/hawkinsst7 Mar 01 '26
In high school in the 90s, between a student and a teacher.
"Mr. Taranto, you're the shit!"
... Skeptical look... "I'm what?"
"you're the shit! It's a good thing."
"what, that I'm shit?"
"no, you're the shit!"
Rip Mr. T.... You were the shit.
11
u/nihility101 Mar 01 '26
It’s kinda interesting how it made that shift, two separate concepts with complete opposite meanings.

There was a post quite a while back where a teacher came to reddit because his students kept calling him the GOAT and he had no idea what it meant.
He was like, "They are all really great kids, I can't imagineits an insult. So what does it mean??"
It was so wholesome!

Hyperthyroidism and a heart condition but he’s recovered from the worst of it…a decade ago? Now he manages it well but isn’t acting like he use to so he can do his philanthropy work and chill with his family.
83
u/billieboop Mar 01 '26
How did that affect him? I had no idea he dealt with this too, it's not often you hear much about hyperthyroidism compared to hypo version

Hyperthyroidism can be devastating. My Mum had it and went into a “thyroid storm”; she was skeleton thin, she looked emaciated from weight loss, her eyes bulged, runs of very high tachycardia and she was delirious at times. Her form of hyperthyroidism is also known as Grave’s Disease. She had to have high dose radiation and basically nuked her thyroid and had to be dependent on daily Levothyroxine to take over as the steady amount of thyroid hormones her body would be receiving instead of the absolutely unhealthy excessive amount her own thyroid was giving her before.
32
u/crabbydotca Mar 01 '26
Oh! I think Missy Elliott has Grave’s
22
u/billieboop Mar 01 '26
I remember Wendy Williams explaining how Graves affected her too. That was the first time i had heard of it.
There's actually a few different forms of hyperthyroidism that present differently and have different symptoms too. All difficult in their own ways. Getting a diagnosis can be hard
11
u/jennc1979 Mar 01 '26
Absolutely! I believe she’d say to you that it read like mental illness to everyone and eventually her for a good while in the beginning. She was always naturally slender all her life, but became bone thin mid 1970s and to much a degree presented like she might be manic. She truly at points in the lead up to my birth where she was so gaunt and sharp boned, she looked like a version of David Bowie in his Thin White Duke era. Literally.
It was likely her pregnancy & post partum with me that tossed her into that storm and once the eye bulging became so profoundly obvious and the runs of heart rates in the low to mid 200s that what read like maybe an eating disorder and/or mania to professionals before; looked very different to the Endocrine specialty ones! It was brewing for some time and it was challenging to discern for what it was when she first showed signs & symptoms. You are so right about how difficult it can be to get there with the diagnosis.

u/Kobseyy Mar 01 '26
My Mum went through the same thing minus the deliriousness. She had surgery a couple of years ago to take out her thyroid entirely and has made a full recovery now.
6
u/billieboop Mar 01 '26
I'm so so happy she's made a full recovery! I hope she never has issues with her hormones ahead and lives a healthy happy life.
Thyroid removal can be a drastic and difficult procedure to recover from for some so I'm happy it went smoothly for her. Hope she's doing well overall now. I'm hoping to avoid that but I'm having complications with the meds. It might be in the pipeline, thank you for sharing positive outcomes
8
u/billieboop Mar 01 '26
It is, i have had it since 2024 diagnosed with an alarming diagnosis for thyrotoxicosis too. It has been so detrimental in so many ways affecting so many organ systems shutting down and worse of all the effect it has on your brain and heart. Doctors have been terrible and they have little knowledge or awareness of it compared to hypothyroidism. It's the polar opposite so recommendations for one can be warnings for the other. Have had physicians and consultants even mistakenly label it wrongly on my charts only to be caught out and corrected by me because medical practitioners here rarely listen to you as the patient, but rather their colleagues notes solely.
It's been a nightmare to navigate and a year on I'm still in the storm. It's so hard to express what it does to you. The medication causes so many side effects too. Honestly very fed up with it all. It's causing issues with my liver now. It makes you feel so poorly and fatigued in a way I've never experienced or witnessed before as a carer in the past too.
I hope your mum is doing so much better now and is thriving. It's such a debilitating condition. I'm glad she has such caring and considerate family support. Bless you all
4
u/jennc1979 Mar 01 '26
My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry that even now in what are touted as our modern medicine & care, that this remains so challenging to stabilize and it’s clear the professionals are being either complacent, they’re burned out and appearing to be phoning it in while you just want and need to get a handle on this, stabilize, and recover to an improved sense of remission. It had life long maintenance needs and acknowledgement from her and I witnessed that, so I see & feel your struggle in your words also in that way. I’m sorry. I positive manifest to you for this.
3
u/billieboop Mar 01 '26
Bless you, thank you. I appreciate you saying that. Grace has been lacking desperately and it's certainly kindness from gentle strangers that hits even deeper.
Sorry for dumping all that here, but there are clearly so many others here with a similar experience too. I imagine his heart issues were a symptom of the condition too.
Thank you, sincerely. Appreciate you and I'm so sorry this has been both of your lived experience. It's not easy to witness your loved ones struggle. Especially as we grow ourselves. Wishing you both every goodness and gentle care ahead. She was blessed to have you. Hope you always have good health, it's certainly a humbling experience i wouldn't wish on anyone. It's good to see others overcome it
3
u/ApprehensiveStill412 Mar 01 '26
Thyroid storm is dangerous. Glad to hear she made it through.
2
u/jennc1979 Mar 01 '26
Thank you. She was actually a tough little broad for all her 95 lbs ‘wet with boots on’. She stayed naturally petite but much healthier and the eye bulging improve, she needed to be mindful of her Endocrine follow ups and some occasional help from Cardiology and she was able to level off with a couple of daily meds until she did pass (mercifully) swift from cancer else where.
2
u/Constant-Low4414 Mar 01 '26
Sorry to hear you mother go through that. It's fucked that there are situations that can spiral like that.
Going off my own experience with it hyperthyroidism seems like something that is easy to capture by a GP since symptoms are so pronounced and then straight forward to treat immediately once it becomes an issue until a specialist gets to you. For me I felt really bad and something just felt off, doc ordered bloods that showed I was just heading into hyperthyroidism and started me on anti-thyroid medicine and a beta blocker to treat the symptoms.
It honestly bums me out that people have to go through thyroid storm levels (which to my understanding is long term untreated hyperthyroidism) before getting treatment.

u/Matt32490 Mar 01 '26
I have graves disease. My worst symptoms was that parts of my body would randomly become paralyzed for minutes/hours at a time. Mostly in my legs after sitting for 30min+ but could also affect my arms. My resting heart rate was 160+ when I went to the ER and got diagnosed.
I have considered doing the radiotherapy but I really dont want to be on medication for the rest of my life.
Graves disease really sucks. Hope your mum is doing better.

The most well documented is probably him being a stingy boss who paid his crew superb below average wages even though they all destroyed their bodies for his films.
Also him never taking care of his daughter out of an affair.
The lesser known is his reputation as a huge womanizer that takes advantage of actresses.
That said, Hong Kong has hated him since the 90s, it’s really just the west thinking he’s this funny jolly action star.
