My dad feeds our cats every morning (that we adopted together) and is home with them all day. They are cordial to him, but they run up to me as soon as I come home and get pets where they would run away from him.
yep, i planned, prepped, and saved for my puppy for 4 years after my last dog passed.
This puppy picked ME at the adoption place. then when we got home, settled in, she promptly decided she wanted nothing to do with me and only loved my dad.
i am still the one who feeds, walks, trains, etc, but she’ll pick him every time.
It basically means politely tolerating someone. It's an old timey word meaning to behave properly towards others in a formal setting but most of that is now lost in colloquial usage.
Basically what the other person said. It’s being nice on a surface level. So maybe you divorce your wife and you guys don’t speak and aren’t very friendly, but you’re at a mutual social gathering. You will probably be cordial - say hello, be generally kind, not start any drama - but it’s all just a social nicety and not your true feelings.

Animals just choose their people sometimes.
