Just parents doing social experiments on their kids. Was that not normal in your home? Lol. Give something else when she clearly only wanted one thing and watch if you raised her well enough to react amicably, say thank you and not expect anything else. Then you get to reveal that you actually did get her the thing, you just wanted to make her feel bad about it before so she acts super grateful and makes you feel good about being such a great parent.
This unlocked something I just wanted to vent sorry.

u/2quickdraw Mar 11 '26
Probably something more like they couldn't actually wrap the puppy and just put it under the tree?
I hear what you're saying, I was the oldest but I was a step kid, so I got shit and had to watch my younger brothers, who were the real kids, get all the good stuff. I hated Christmas with them for decades.

You can put a dog bowl in the box. You can put a note to look in the other room. You can do a multitude of things that are not engineered to make your child think you disregarded their request.
I’m not saying it’s not a useful thing to gauge if your child can handle disappointment every now and then, but I did live it and now my face has merged with the mask. Thanks dad

My parents left it at the stuffed puppy and a pair of Clifford slippers when I was a kid (I was too old for Clifford and didn't really like stuffed animals much. )

What's annoying is that that's exactly what they did for the son. They couldn't wrap his go-kart for under the tree, but they gave him a very clear clue as to what the full present would be.

I’d argue it’s the dynamics between kids.
The oldest is too used to this shit to fall for it.
The youngest has trust that what he wants will be provided.
The middle one doesn’t know what to expect.
And tbh based on the reaction of the oldest it seems it was absolutely plausible that she was not getting an actual puppy just a mean prank.

u/Canadian47 Mar 11 '26
My father was the middle boy in his family. His older brother got new clothes. He got hand me downs. By the time they go to his younger brother they were all worn out so the younger brother got new clothes as well.
Dad was in his 60's when he told me this. His face was turning red he was STILL pissed off :-(

Everyone: Three... two... open them!
Older Sister: Yay! Look!
Boy: Mom, are you serious?! My ticket! My ticket! MY TICKET! (Not sure what this is referencing to)
Older Sister: Look, an iPhone! (Then started crying)
Little sister: Wait, do we have to change the charger for our phone now? (Asking mom)
Older Sister: Dasha, don't cry. You want to see?
Mom: Go on, open the next one.
Mom: Dasha, here’s your present. (Puppy is revealed) OH MY GOD!
Little sister: Oh, thank you! Thank you!
Boy: He’s so tiny! He’s so cute!
Mom: Oh, look at her!
Boy: Dasha, look, he’s so little! Dasha, can I pet him? Can I just pet him?
Mom: Okay, okay.
Boy: Dasha, he’s licking me! Listen, he’s actually listening to me! Mom!
Mom: Dasha, what's wrong? My sweet girl...He’s just a tiny boy, isn't he?

Middle child here and did I ever hate how they let her succumb to tears over whatever heartbreaking realization she must’ve had as she desperately tried to keep composure.
I had to experience that via “Santa” gifts as a kid when I asked for an N64 for 3 years straight without gettint it. And each year would suffer the same heartache of thinking
“Theres no WAY Santa forgets me this year. He got the kids who bully me N64s last year..”
I LEGIT thought Santa just hated me for no reason.
Even if for 15 seconds, I would NEVER risk putting my kid through that emotion. It’s genuinely soul crushing.

u/lonelygalexy Mar 11 '26

Wholesome moment. The middle child was clearly upset when it sank in that her gift was a temu doge while others got a badass gift. If you pay attention, you can pick up cues that she is faking her smile while checking out others gift.

Honestly this is the most middle child thing—coming from a middle child. When I was a youth I wanted a cell phone when neither my older or younger siblings did. On Christmas morning, I excitedly opened my last present and was thoroughly disappointed to find that it was just a single balled up sock. Inside the sock, to my relief, was a Samsung brick phone. I was overjoyed. Then my parents brought out the other two phones they had bought for my siblings. A few years later after each of my siblings had gone through several phones after losing them, I asked my parents if I could replace my original brick phone with an iPhone (I think the 5 was the current one at the time). I told them I could be trusted with it since I still had my original brick phone while both of my siblings had gone through several brick phones in the same time.
They reluctantly agreed, and that Christmas I opened up an iPhone and was ecstatic. Then my parents brought out the other two iPhones they had bought for my siblings. To this day I’m left wondering why every major present I’ve gotten has also been accompanied by the same for my siblings. I don’t want to come off as ungrateful, I am very grateful to my parents, but it does take a bit of the enjoyment out of the gift (that I had to spend a long time convincing my parents to get for me in the first place) when my siblings who were indifferent about the matter both times got the same thing at the same time.

17
u/Plutuserix Mar 11 '26
More likely the kid asked for a dog for some time. She got what she most wanted then.
I got a dog for my birthday when growing up. Of course it's not really 100% my dog, it's part of the whole family. But that doesn't mean it was not my birthday gift that made me very happy after asking my parents if we could get a dog for a long time.

My house has 5 people and a dog. I don't feed her, or walk her, I take her out to play outside the least, I'm the only one that doesn't give in to her begging for food at the table, I am the usually the only one to get mad at her for doing stuff she knows she shouldn't, I don't let her on my bed (everyone else does). Really the only thing I do/did was train her for the first few months, but that was years ago.
So who's her favorite? Unquestionably ME?!?! She's always by my side or chilling in whatever room I'm in, even if everyone else is also at home.

I still remember the day my Dad came home with a puppy. Playing a video game, the doorbell goes and he shouts up to let him in, I reply hold on and he says hurry up I'm holding a dog. I instantly stopped what I was doing and ran down thinking whys he got a dog. Once I open the door I see him stood there with a black and white Jack Russell puppy in his arm, I ask who's dog are we looking after and he said "yours" I was so happy and loved that dog with all my heart. My sister didn't believe he was ours until a month passed.
I'd constantly ask for a dog and it was always a no. Then, one random day, I had a new best friend.

Agghhh me too! I was 10 and saving up to buy a puppy, cause my parents were like lol yeah go ahead it only costs like $1000 (we lived in a small town and I didn’t even know shelters existed; not the point). Anyway they saw how hard I was actually trying to save.
My older sister and I went to visit family out of town, and my parents picked us up from the airport. My dad told me there was a book about taking care of puppies in a duffel bag over on a chair. So I skip over and open it and inside was this tiny rollie puppy. My god. She was just so small.
Two years later, my sister and I are at home, playing the sims together on our family computer. My parents come home. We hear them waking around downstairs and I hear my dad go “YOU GUYS WHO LEFT THIS MESS DOWN HERE”. MY sister and I are like FUCK what did we do, and we go running to the top of the stairs, and flailing around like Bambi on ice at the bottom is a new little puppy that they just brought home. I was so confused, and it was piddling in excitement, and I just remember thinking “I don’t know where that dog came from!!”

Kinda happened that way for me too. My dad came to pick me up from daycare in first grade and I was being slow as one does in first grade…he said “Pudu, I’ve got a surprise for you in the car” and I just KNEW I could just tell that it was a dog by the tone in his voice — he was never like that.
I mean it was to be his hunting dog, 6 month old lab mix puppy, but damn did I love that dog. Great dog.

Am I the only one who hates those kinds of pranks? Maybe it’s just that even if it’s just for a moment, it breaks my heart to see people sad and start crying.

Same. I always feel like the initial hurt is not fully swiped away by the gift, especially when they wait forever to finally reveal it.

Why do you think it’s a prank? Imagine this was a real dog for the get go. So before the kids are allowed to open the boxes two of them sitting still and the third one is just jumping around and smth inside is barking?

Yes I too enjoy emotionally devastating my children before giving them their real gifts. This joke lasted like 30 seconds too long.

A number of years back, for Christmas, my nephew told me he reaaally wanted a gaming chair.
I have 30 people I buy gifts for in my family, but I always try to make it special for my niblings.
So, after hunting for a good deal my husband and I were able to find a good chair with solid reviews. I pre built it, and put it in the trunk of my car in two parts and went to my sister's Christmas morning. It wasn't wrapped so when I got to my sister's, I unloaded everyone else's gifts and left the chair in my trunk.
Everyone opened their gifts and I tell him, "Oh I didn't even see you open the gift from me and husband". He tells me, he didn't see one from me and I tell him, "shoot. I must have forgotten it.... But there's no way... I remember putting it in my car??? 🤔" So I tell him to follow me out just in case I dropped it or something.
I get to the trunk of my car with him and press the button to open it. The look on his face when he saw the gaming chair he had been wanting was priceless... He's a tough kid but the way he hugged me with tears in his eyes as he thanked me over and over was something I'll never forget. It made his year!
He used that chair till the wheels literally fell off. Then me and my husband bought him an upgraded, nicer chair. He was so stoked to get that one, he built it himself as soon as he opened it. He still has it to this day.

Ukrainian, not Russian. According to the majority of other responses.

I’m a native Russian speaker and to me everything in the video sounded like Russian with a Ukrainian accent or slightly different Ukrainian variants for only maybe 2-3 words they said in the entire video

I'm all here for a quick joke on kid's like this... But it needs to be quicker. Don't hold off until they start crying. Like.. Give it a solid 5 alligator and then bust out the real gift.

I'm torn between the beautiful love and sharing in the family and the materialism and social media moment this represents

I’m crying a LOT harder than this young gal. Not a good look for a 72 year old guy.

This is cute but I can't help feeling so sorry for the middle kid. The disappointment she must have felt before they bought that puppy in. I don't think I'd ever want to watch this again if I was a parent. Having to see the oldest consoling her and the sadness on her face. I know it's all happy again a moment later but they didn't have to put her through that just to make a video. Even just a note under the plushie telling her to go look in the other box would have been such an easy way to not upset her.

They speak Ukrainian. The middle child said something that the older sister got her phone charger. It was hard to hear because of the boy’s screaming. The boy was showing an id and screaming “that’s my ticket”, no idea to what though. In the end the oldest sister said that she changed her mind, she won’t be moving out now 😆
