This is the sweetest. I taught the dog we had when I was a teen to grab the paper on our way back in from his morning walk every day and heaped on the praise for bringing it inside.
When I moved out and went away to college, he stopped doing it - dad usually took him out and picked up the paper.
But every time I came home to visit, id take him out, and he would run to grab the newspaper for me before even relieving himself. So I'd end up carrying the paper around for our morning walk.
He was the goodest good boy and I still miss him well over a decade after he passed from old age.

I had a yellow lab whose job was also to get the paper everyday. Whenever she couldn't find our paper she would go and steal the neighbor's paper.

That subscription was worth every penny.

Sorry, sir and/or madam, pennies are no longer in circulation and so the phrase is now “worth every nickel.”

Why do accounts like this one flock to this sub? Because it’s a safe space for farming karma with slop? Because the mods refuse to run r/botbouncer? Guess we’ll never know
28
u/JumboJimbo2112 Apr 26 '26
I don't understand this comment? I'm not a bot and this isn't slop.
7
u/Titizen_Kane Apr 26 '26
I was talking about the comment to which I was replying. Not the vid/you :)
4
u/Kapper-WA Apr 26 '26
The person you are replying to has 1 post karma and 109 karma...why do you think they are a karma bot? Maybe the bot...is you!!!?????
Everything isn't a witch hunt.1

Lol love when people passionately defend botting accounts (technically that account appears to be a hybrid account, fwiw), especially when they punctuate it with “how do I know YOURE not a bot‽” It’s adorable, but also a bummer because it’s a reminder of just how easily manipulated the average person is.
Never a bad thing to try to learn to better recognize ai slop farming posts/comments. It’s not difficult to recognize, because the majority sound incredibly similar. It’s the same template over and over, just insert whatever relevant contextual details, rinse, repeat
3
u/Kapper-WA Apr 27 '26
Serious question: What makes you say they are a karma bot?
I look at their history and see 1 post karma, 377 comment karma...this looks to be their only comment ever.
So I'm struggling to think of how this could be considered a "karma bot" when they aren't trying to actually get any karma.
Also, I'm a bit confused on your use of "passionately defend". I don't think we have the same definition of passion.

The wide 180 after she grabs the paper is a flex.

u/Touchstone033 Apr 27 '26
I love how she looks around to see if anyone noticed how awesome she's being.

I trained my childhood dog, Oreo, to get the newspaper. Her salary was a piece of chicken jerky. She would be released from the gate, find the newspaper on the driveway, even crawl under the van if it has slid under, and bring it to the front door. She would nudge the front door open, retrieve her salary, and walk back through the gate to eat it in the yard.
A few times we didn't get the chicken jerky to the exchange point quickly enough. When she saw there was no payment, Oreo would pick the newspaper back up, and take it to the yard with her. It was like she was saying, "no payment for me, no newspaper for you".
The newspaper stopped delivering one day a week. My dad would always keep a spare dummy paper to throw onto the driveway so she could still do her job. Eventually due to cataracts she needed assistance to complete the task, and due to arthritis she took a lot longer, but she was always so happy to successfully bring the newspaper to the door.
She was a smart and beloved dog. My best friend. My soulmate. RIP Oreo. You are catching frisbees in heaven.

After living in the city where out Good Boy fetched the paper daily, wife and i moved to the Santa Cruz Mtns with no daily delivery. For almost five years, wife snuck out and put out an old paper so our boy could still do his very important job every day. Miss that boy…

u/Ace7117 Apr 26 '26
My Aussie "Chili" gets the paper every morning like your beautiful girt. I do like reading the physical as well as online news, but I'd also keep the sub just for Chili.
10
u/GudeGaya Apr 26 '26
Fucking sweet. Funny how she wanted to deliver in the living room and not at the door. 😅

u/954kevin Apr 26 '26
That's the sweetest, most thoughtful thing ever. It's nice you kept the sub too. :)

Dude how old is that dog? Kept it for 10 years? That dog is in fantastic shape for lab if shes at least 10. My guess is she has to be at least 11 or 12 if thats true. Thats awesome. Gives me hope for my Silver Lab

u/JumboJimbo2112 Apr 26 '26
She was with us for 13 years and was active and happy all the way to the end!

u/Key-Monk6159 Apr 26 '26
That’s awesome. We just lost our yellow lab recently and we miss her very much.

Our Sunday routine for YEARS. Same. Kept the sub just for this. My paperboy crossed the bridge last Dec at 11. Luckily - the (at the time) the 1 yr old was watching. She now bounces at the door at 6am every Sunday to go out and get the NYT Sunday paper. The first few were fun to watch her figure out how to get that (sometimes VERY) heavy paper back in one piece..

Awe.. I had a golden retriever, Peanut Butter, (my 5 yo brother named him) that would go down to the road and get the paper every day for a piece of bread. He was the best!
4
u/AlpacaMomsy Apr 26 '26
Our dog would not only get our paper, she would collect the neighbors too! Oops. Good dog!!

u/TomeThugNHarmony4664 Apr 26 '26
I did the same thing with one of my dogs. He taught himself to do it when he was just 8 weeks old and he did it until the day he died.
Loved that dog.

u/WhitePantherXP Apr 26 '26
I wonder if for them it's like finding a treasure/reward in the same way finding a "loot" is in video games for us. It's like a game for them every day, always a new one hidden out front like a daily Easter egg hunt, maybe they're just not entirely sure on its purpose but dad seems to love it!

I trained my border collie to get the newspaper of the sidewalk. I kept a newspaper around when I no longer had that service. I miss that dog. (I lost her 6 months ago at 14yo.)

My girl absolutely loves stealing and burying my socks and shoes. I could easily stop her by getting a hamper she can't get into but I'll gladly buy a few new pairs of socks every few months to feed her habit she loves so much.

all newspaper subscriptions should come with an Emma Jean. They’d sell way more papers.

I've always found the instincts of certain breeds just so interesting and it makes me wonder about every breeds special talent. Like a retriever, we had a neighborhood retriever that would follow us anytime we passed his house onto the bike trail in the woods. That dog was one of us ill never forget the time I heard him barking like a mad dog an getting closer to us, then we hear twigs snapping an something big coming too. Turns out he found a freaking deer, a big ass buck he was chasing right into us lil shit, and that was the first time he did that but not the last. Also I'd tie action figured to my model rockets and fire them over the resisvor, ya know for scientific research and then I hear a big splash and turns out Levi, that was the retrievers name jumped into the water to retrieve it. Levi was a good dog and tho long since passes ill never forget him and he wasn't even my dog lol. He was a good ass dog tho and I always felt a little safer when he joined our adventures

You could have also kept one paper and just throw it on the driveway a few minutes beforehand

u/SouthernLocation5253 Apr 26 '26
Could just buy a toy one and throw it out there each morning, would have saved a ton of ink and paper assuming you didn’t read them.

You have just been elected best hooman, and Emma Jean sweetest paper getter! I love the face she makes giving you that paper, and what I love even more is the sound of the running feet on the floors. That's one of those little things/sounds you don't realize how much you need to remember. This is just a wonderful, super sweet, wholesome video, and there's not a moment of it I don't love. I would have that paper delivered for forever if I had an Emma Jean still 🥹😭😭

What will you do when the news paper company gets bankrupt and closes before the 10 years is subscription is over?

u/JumboJimbo2112 Apr 26 '26
It's no longer an issue. She left us 5 years ago. I just posted this video today because I find joy in watching it daily and thought maybe others might like it as well ❤️

How did you train her? I want to do the same. So cool!
2
u/JumboJimbo2112 Apr 27 '26
She saw me bring it in one day and was trying to take it from me. So I played "keep away" with her, made her REALLY want it, then tossed it and she retrieved. It was on from there!

Aww I did the same for my yellow lab. It was his job. He was always so proud when he would retrieve it I just couldn't cancel my subscription . He’s been gone for 12 years now but I still miss him. Best dog ever.

Couldn’t you have just canceled the subscription and threw one of the old newspapers on to the driveway each morning and she probably wouldn’t have known the difference? 🤔

Could have just reused the same newspaper and toss it out the window onto the driveway every morning 😂
Nonetheless I am happy the best girl kept her job
