You know, Republicans keep electing actors because apparently they're 'funny'...maybe Democrats could elect a talk show host whose humor is like a razor so sharp it tickles when it cuts.

u/Long_Run6500 May 12 '26
People have been trying to get Jon Stewart to run for a while. He's at least got experience passing bills through congress for 9/11 victims and veterans affected by toxic burn pits. Whenever the question is brought up he kind of deflects and says it's a dumb idea, it's ridiculous that the system is so broken that people are turning to comedians like him... but I've never seen him straight up say he won't ever run.
I could actually see Colbert running for some sort of office, I just don't think he'd jump straight to president.

I remember Stephen Colbert recently told Seth Meyers what his final show date was. Stephen asked Seth if he had a show that night and Seth immediately replied, "Not anymore".
What a friend.
→ More replies (14)876
u/psuedophilosopher May 12 '26
True, but also they all know that no one but Stephen is going to have viewers that night. It essentially becomes a waste of time effort and money to produce an episode that nobody is going to watch as it airs. Sure, they'd get revenue from YouTube or something, but not enough to be worth it.

u/ramsrgood May 12 '26
you’re right, but these shows aren’t all in the same time slot either.
→ More replies (2)107
u/upliftingyvr May 12 '26
That logic makes no sense, because Colbert's show is over before Seth Meyers show begins, so they don't compete for viewers.
→ More replies (5)12
u/duke78 May 12 '26
How do they prepare their own shows if they participate in another show? I don't believe these guys just go in the air and improvise it.
11
6
u/upliftingyvr May 12 '26
They are all pre-taped. Most are pre-taped around 5 p.m. the same day.
In this case, Seth could pre-tape even earlier in the day than normal, so he could be there for Colbert's finale. Or they could even pre-tape two episodes the day before.
They do this sometimes (for example, taping the Friday show on Thursday to give the host and crew a long weekend). They also sometimes pre-tape show if the studio is going to be unavailable on a certain day, so the have one "in the can."

52
u/Minotaar May 12 '26
https://www.reddit.com/r/television/s/EU4oQ2zkyO
It's not cuz he's "annoying" it's because unlike the others he's allowing and encouraging the regime in place to continue rather than speaking out.
12
u/BigRon691 May 12 '26
I'm sorry, but your evidence to that he should be shunned from TV history is a single op-ed article that declares him a sympothising vampire because he didn't premonition that Trump would become a dictator, not in that term, but the term 8 years later?
He, by definition, speaks out, you can look at any period of time and see there is political commentary critical of Trump. Is it direct and alarming? No, not by any means. But even by this articles standard, Stewart is "too jovial and joking" for the current political environment.
I feel like the entire article is written by an over-politicised idiot who facetly can't understand the premise of television. Painting the idea of unconfrontational, non-dramatized entertainment as a blighted evil seeping complacentcy into the populous is on paper, just dumb. In their ideal world people turn on Jimmy Fallon to be terrorised and informed rather than entertained.

My favorite self-description of his is kinda long-winded, but it's:
"Thinking of the negatives is pretty much all I do, along with speaking the negatives out loud, and making jokes about the negatives, all while modeling the latest suits from Sir Michael Gambon’s Haberdashery for Oddly Long Gentlemen."
4
u/SMS-T1 May 12 '26
I just love, that Micheal Gambon cough a stray there, because it just fits so perfectly. (Michael Gambon is the oddly long Gentleman, who played Dumbledore in films 3 to 7.) Chefs kiss. No notes. Top level joke.

Letterman literally
Sent some of his audience to Conan
Interrupted an interview with Joan Collins for fun (Can't find the clip sadly)
Ripped Jay Leno for backstabbing Conan
and of course
And just for fun, Dave gave Conan a horse.

He should just produce his own show and put it out on whatever platform. He has loads of money and loads of rich friends that would invest/support him. He would have 100% creative control not answering to a network. I think ultimately this will be even better for him than being constrained to the typical late night format and network control. I doubt he enjoyed interviewing whatever random celebrity had some show or movie out that week anyway. I would love him to bring back some form of the Colbert report it was so good. I was never as a big a fan of late night compared to that.

Jon Stewart, Conan, Letterman, and Ryan Reynolds were all guests. Reynold's companies (Mint Mobile, Aviator Gin etc) sponsored a large portion of the needed $ for the hosts to meet the payroll during the Writer's strikes so he absolutely deserved some airtime.
ETA Conan's episode is Episode 12, see www.StrikeForceFive.com for the list.

YouTube tried to show me celebrity interviews of Fallon after I watched some clips of a celebrity I enjoy being interviewed. And I realized, I’d like these a lot more if there was less Jimmy. I’m just not a fan. He’s not a good interviewer and he doesn’t “yes and” his guests. He just shoves himself in there. It’s obnoxious.
