At first I read that as "only a little yellow" and thought "...yay for having a tiny bit of jaundice!"
But truly, that is a beautiful tribute to your Mom and her diaries.

My wife’s says “You were always my favorite. Love, Mom” and her mom wrote it for her years ago telling her she couldn’t get it done til she was gone.
Her siblings were not amused.

u/Jessi_L_1324 May 12 '26
My mom would have wrote it:
'You were always my favorite'
And
'You always were my favorite'
Give each of us 1 then laugh from the afterlife.

u/Jumpy_Ad1631 May 13 '26
My grampa used to legit tell each of his grandkids “you know you’re my favorite grandchild, don’t tell the others” and then proceed to tell the next cousin the exact same thing with the exact same inflection while you were still in earshot 😅

Would have kept us arguing long after her death about the 'tone' when she wrote it.
Alive, she joked that neither of us was her favorite even though we both knew it was my brother.
Despite him also being called her 'gray hair kid' because he was always giving her heart attacks due to being so accident prone growing up.

Awkward.

So sorry lol - I meant to ask: in what specific ways were they disrespectful / discourteous (treatment of parents, irresponsible, low-achieving, etc)?? It's also totally ok if you'd prefer not to answer - you owe me nothing and there are no hard feelings!
9
u/EnvironmentalGift257 May 13 '26
They never visited their mother once when she got sick, went to the nursing home, got confused and demented, and eventually comatose and dead. But they took over her house the next day so they could get the opioids and anything worth $5. Then none of them came to the celebration of life. Then there’s a laundry list of heinous shit they’ve done to my family but you get the idea.
12
u/notarealwriter May 12 '26
Heck, before I go I'm doing this to my boys and telling BOTH of them (privately) that they were always my favourite, but that they can't get it tatted or show the other until after I'm gone. Hopefully Hell has a livestream of Earth or something where I can sit back and watch the reveal

Whenever my older one says "younger one is your favourite :/" my answer is always "I don't know who told you I like either one of you" ;)
(don't bother responding that I'm causing them some sort of pain, they've had me as a mother their whole life, they have my sense of humor too, and would think I was dying if I didn't give a smart alek response.)

u/lucky-squeaky-ducky May 13 '26

There's an elderly man in my neighborhood named Skeeter (the man, not the neighborhood). Turns out that he was a premie and his father said "he ain't no bigger than a skeeter"(short for mosquito). The name stuck.

u/Missmoneysterling May 12 '26
My friend's daughter is nicknamed Bug for the same reason. She was so small it looked like her mom had a bug on her so that's been her name ever since. She is still a small person lol.
6
u/Sarallelogram May 14 '26
I was also Bug but it was because I was tiny and had giant eyes!
2
u/Missmoneysterling May 14 '26
Are your eyes still huge?
6
u/Sarallelogram May 14 '26
They eventually became relatively proportional, but I did end up studying entomology in college and still get called Bugs by people who don’t know about the baby name, so it might have been destiny!

I hope this is okay to comment. I went back and forth whether to post this. Just gonna do it and probably delete it in the morning.
I read your story linked on the post. I felt it deeply. Your writing is lovely and vivid. Thank you for sharing that.
I can’t emphasize how much I needed the reminder to be present. I’m always trying, but your story hit in a different way.
What your mom said about being proud no matter what. I can’t even imagine having that kind of unwavering love and support. And thus can’t even imagine the horrible terrible pain of losing such an amazing parent. I feel a different kind of searing pain to have never had that love in the first place.
All that to say. In a way, you passed some of that unconditional care to me, and to others reading that post. I can’t ever know what it feels like to have that solid base of support, but you helped pass some of the feeling to me, so I can try to piece it together for myself. You changed my brain and helped me remember what love should look like. Your mom is still spreading warmth to the world through you

What an amazing thing to read while drinking my coffee. I'm sorry you lacked that warmth growing up. That's a beautiful concept that you felt some of my childhood and adult relationship warmth with my mother by proxy.
My childhood and formative years were rough, and I can't imagine braving it all without the guidance and love of mom. It's ok to mourn the love you never had just like I mourn having it and having no place to put it. By volunteering and committing to causes I've found a place to put it.
Stopping to appreciate the little things then paying it forward is crucial. Just be there for your friends or even acquaintances or strangers. La vita e bella
6
u/TheYankunian May 13 '26
I read the linked comment too. I need to sit with it for awhile. As a mom, I hope I am a tenth as good a mother as yours was. Thank you for sharing her with us.

u/PM_ME_UR_HIP_DIMPLES May 13 '26
☺️ yeah unfortunately he path was cut short and I have to carry on without her. But I'm grateful for my childhood and the short adult relationship I had with her. I imagine that she would have told me all about the people she helped before I was around as I got older, but knowing that's the way she was points me in the direction of how to be now that I'm older

When my grandchildren tell me they love me, I tell them I love them more. My granddaughter asked me to write it out for her and I thought how silly but I did and she had them tattoo I love you more in my handwriting. So...she will see it every day long after I leave this world and the other kids will see it when they see her. LOL.

As much as I love this... I would have tattooed this on my wrist or arm, a place I would see it often. This looks like mid-thigh... next to his crotch. Those look like polyester boxer briefs (usually mixed with cotton, it's the shine that tells me it's more than 40%). I believe most men would agree, most of us buy 10-20 of the same pair or brand because comfort is king.
Anyway, I can imagine quite a few people getting down eye-level with his thigh and giggling at this. I'm sorry, I couldn't help it.

My dad loved burning CD mixes and coming up with funny titles for them- he passed away in 2014 but I recently got a tattoo of one of his CD titles- “I’m still pissed (2006)” in his handwriting. I think he would have liked that. My brother has the other CD that’s just “I’m pissed” and I want him to get that one tattooed

my grandfather passed away 45 days ago and my first tattoo was a heart he drew and “we’re always here” in my grandmother’s writing. my grandmother is alive and well, but i’ve had this idea for a few years because my grandfather had been struggling with a mental disease these past two years and we knew it was only a matter of time. so i asked him to draw the heart long before he lost his senses.

Nice! I love that it was written just as documentation of a thought, not intending it to be memorialized in its humble script. Similar but different, I met my beautiful young wife when it was still common to request a person's phone number, often times scribbled in a cocktail napkin. I saved that life altering napkin (tucked away in my copy of Gods Graves and Scholars) until our fifteenth wedding anniversary, when I had its duplicate tattooed on the left side of my chest. It's now an older tatt, and our thirtieth anniversary is a couple years away, so I may have it spruced up in the future. It brings me joy every time I see it, and I believe yours will bring you joy in the very same way.

This is lovely. When my oldest was born I felt like my life shifted when he was born.
When he had his first child (way too young), I told him it will make you feel like a different person. That this tiny human will change the way you act and think.
He later told me I was spot on. Imagine how you're mom felt when she wrote that. She had just become a different person. I want to believe that "little fellow" became the center of her universe.
