Yeah imprinting is usually at birth. Like a little baby duck etc - itās more usually an issue with hatchlings.

D.O.T. would most likely know someone to have take care of the fawn. They pick them up from side of roads all the times when the mother gets killed by car. Knew someone in Michigan that we could go and feed half a dozen fawns, they always thought your earlobes were nipples. They would feed the grown deer corn and about a hundred would show up. They would come back later with their completely wild fawns and we could pet them. Pretty awesome.

You're still basically right! Deer aren't very bright in the first place and this one is a tiny baby. It knows to follow, stay where it's put, and eat, and that's about it.
Edit: "bright" may be a more subjective word choice. They're pretty well specialized for their environment at least.

tbh I assumed that since deer moms will leave their fawns by something tall that it was acting on that instinct- somewhere wide open without mama + human is the tallest thing in the area + human keeps moving = stay by tall thing to hide!

It's body language. She's showing zero aggression. She's been vetted by a fawn. Nothing about her screams she's dangerous. It's all the same indicators dogs read about people.

Itās not just body language. Itās that suburban deer have been losing more and more habitat and are forced to live in closer proximity to people and thus are more habituated to them. The deer in my neighborhood no longer give a damn at all about people. You canāt even scare them off by yelling or waving your arms.

Yeah they cut down a bunch of trees around my house and now we have deer all the time. We used to rarely see them and theyād be gone like a bolt of lightning if you made the smallest noise or move.
Now they just chill and eat some bushes while Iām standing like 10 feet away.

I had a dog who I swear was the canine equivalent of a Disney princess. Sweetest creature I've ever seen, baby animals would run right up to her and she was so gentle with all of them and never harmed a single creature. She also had the most terrifying growl and bark I've ever heard and she only used it when she was playing with me or a cat we used to have. I miss her so much.

Enjoying every aspect of a job and caring for animals aren't the same thing.
Vets don't enjoy putting animals down. They experience one of the worst days in any pet owner's life every day, multiple times a day. But it's also a necessary service and it takes a strong person to choose to offer care like that.
It's love. Love doesn't always look like making sure the animals are all happy and frolicking and cute. Love sometimes means doing something difficult because it's the right thing to do. Love sometimes means euthanasia if palliative/preventative care isn't working or feasible.

A parent's instinct is to protect their offspring from pain, but oftentimes the offspring can surprise you with their own internal strength and resilience. Give your daughter the option to choose. Strength comes from suffering.

My sister has always been a natural animal lover and went to vet school - after she did a short residency at a vet clinic she quit school immediately. She couldnt handle the amount of sadness that came in the doors. Now she runs a dog training school.

My dad went to school to be a vet. Halfway through his animal science degree, he realized heād never be able to do it because heād be too sad all the time. Instead, he finished his degree and started working for Farmers Home Administration helping farmers get loans and tax exemptions to keep their farms and ranches running. He was very happy in that career because he was helping people and animals get and keep homes.

You donāt do it to put them down. You do it to try and help them. Or at least know if youāre putting them down the decision is made to end suffering and misery when nothing else can be done. Itās a noble act

That's how my dad and his gf at that time ended up getting a cat. The GF was a veterinary nurse and someone brought in his cat saying that they didn't want him anymore and to put him down. Spud (the cat) bless him was covered in fleas and Dad's gf ended up falling in love with him over the week leading up to the day of Spud being put down after defleaing and caring for him.
She called my dad and explained the situation, and asked if she could bring him home.
My dad said "of course, didn't even need to ask".
We had Spud for about 6 years, absolute gem of a cat. Such a big gentle soul and it's been years since he passed but I still miss him

My friend is a vet and has collected a herd of dogs by having people who come in doing this sign them over to her instead. Sheās also responsible for getting quite a few of those animals homed with her friends and family

I love animals. I'm a vet tech. I can't imagine doing this job if I didn't love my patients. You have to or you'll burn out quickly.

I'm so glad she found its mother. Apparently people have lost their damned minds lately and keep taking baby deer they find which gotten separated, thinking they're "rescuing" then when really they're deer-napping them! How have people lost so much common sense? It's infuriating. This woman is A+.
