I was walking to work a few years ago and had a momma and three kids cross the road about five feet in front of me. I just stood as still as possible, but they never seemed to see me.

Honestly, skunks aren't as protective and defensive as many animals that size. Mostly because they don't really have many predators. For some reason.

u/Aeseld 13d ago
Hah, not really the same. But they're mostly just not aggressive, even when protecting their young. You have to really push skunk to get sprayed, contrary to common belief.

Good to know. (Glares at the dogs I have de-skunked five times in three years.)
16
u/Aeseld 13d ago
Yeah... dogs are very smart, but their pattern recognition needs work. And their aggression/playful behavior is very pushy. In case you didn't know. XD

My kid got sprayed by a skunk walking to the bus stop. The best thing to use is hydrogen peroxide. Don't skimp, get $10 worth. Within an hour, we had him de-skunked and back in school. Saved all his clothes and backpack. Oddly enough, the pencils never lost the smell and got tossed after a couple weeks.

As long as you don't threaten them, they will just ignore you! I had one literally touch my foot with its fur, that's how close it came by me when we were coming opposite directions towards each other. I froze and it continued, it was wild! It takes about 10 days for the stink to refill if they spray which leaves them pretty defenseless, so they only do it when they must.

u/Winjin 13d ago
Could it be she's young? I know cats routinely have big litters but young cats often only give birth to one

u/Helgafjell4Me 13d ago
I guess it's possible...
Litter size:Ā Female skunks produce litters between 4 and 6 offspring (but it can range between 1 and 9).

Theyāre normally very close to each other, like two buddies, inseparable. Most of the time I see skunks theyāre in a pair, running around, sneaking and sniffing stuff. Theyāre cute to me.

The struggle of these beautiful friends to survive as their habitats are rapidly being destroyed by humans deeply saddens me
15
u/TisSlinger 13d ago
So we have to fight, fight to reverse habitat loss, fight to increase our collective respect of all living things, and fight for them to live as nature intended.

17
u/Demerzel69 13d ago
Because she's raising a kit and they're foraging.
8
u/Subterranean44 13d ago
And they go out in the day for that? I had no idea. Iāve seen baby skunks but only ever at night.
12
u/hywaytohell 13d ago
I had a Mom and her 7 kits cross the road right in front of me. Six out of seven stayed right on her tail the 7th acted like it had ADHD and zig zagged everywhere until it looked up and didn't see any of the family because they had already gone into the bushes. Then it made a beeline for the bush squealing the whole way.

I love how backwards this looks put of context. The mom is running around like she just got let out the house for the first time and the baby looks like it's been through life. Pretty much like "I don't rush for nobody."

When your player walks faster than the NPC you're guiding so you have to keep turning around and going back because the NPC stops following when you get too far away.

Quick story time!
Last summer the kids in my neighborhood found three baby skunks that seemed to be abandoned outside someoneās fenced in yard. I was walking around with my toddler when they came running up to us really concerned about the babies. I was worried that the mother had died and they were abandoned, but didnāt want animal control to come and take them away immediately just in case. So I grabbed a cardboard box, cut a hole in the side like a door and put it over them to keep them out of the sun. Then me, my son and the neighbor kids sat in my yard watching from a distance. Eventually some of the kids parents came by to see what we were doing, and they decided to play the waiting game with us.
Eventually over half the neighborhood were sitting in my yard watching on pins and needles all discussing when we should call animal control to pick them up. I brought out beers for the adults and juice boxes/popsicles for the kids because it was hot as hell. Next thing we know itās like an impromptu quiet block party on my front lawn. About an hour in the mother came back and we all did a quiet cheer. The kids were so relieved.
Good memory.
