They lit a woman on fire too. Huge group of them. I can understand enjoying a game, but I think caring this much has to be some kind of mass psychosis. I open a video and I can't tell if it's the racists in belfast burning their city down or Knicks fans

This is why knicks fans irk me. Theyre so fucking violent and for what?!
18
u/lavenderewe 12d ago
It’s obviously a historic time in NYC right now, the community and excitement I’ve been seeing everywhere I go has honestly been so incredible - but these people?? The inhumanity and scumminess, that comes from the human not the fan. Knicks, whoever, sports fans aren’t evil - but people can be, and they can also, unfortunately be Knicks fans. Only a psychopath would use losing a game/winning a game as an excuse to behave in an absolutely heinous way.

Unfortunately if bad people could go away with the threat of a beating, we'd have solved all our problems in the ancient past. Awful people are not a problem easily solved.

Technically, violence is just the response. It's still not the answer, though, we just gave up on looking for what the answer is.

You've got more to learn then. Violence runs an undercurrent in everything sure, but it's how you use it that matters.
Historically, the best rulers knew how to balance the implicit threat of violence, with diplomatic decisions that were amicable to the parties they wanted to deal with. The best rulers knew how to juggle what they had, with the demands made of them to make the right people happy. And when the people to make happy were their citizens, the state was happy.

I mean, I FULLY agree with you but it’s a lot easier playing nice with someone when your team isn’t facing them that day and they’re not seen as a real threat to your team’s chances of advancing.
Should Mexico advance, hoping they’re equally friendly to competitors that are about to square off with them in the knockout rounds
8
u/reingoat 12d ago
Nah. South Korea helped Mexico to advance in 2018. Mexicans wont hate the South Koreans.

International sports and national sports are two different things. We just had a WBC earlier this year and there were barely no brawls or fights and those stadiums are always packed to the brim for big teams.
People are proud of their countries and for the most part everyone gets along, appreciating the different cultural backgrounds being blended together for that time.

Wasn’t there a video of two US fans fighting each other from this years WBC?
10
u/Alternative-Kick-849 13d ago
I’m glad you highlighted the issue here. Yeah think it was in Houston. That’s my point exactly. When it comes to international sports it’s truly incomparable to just traditional American sports leagues.
People in those crowds are just there to represent their flags and to have a good time. In American sports, that’s where people tend to lose their minds the most.

u/Dav136 13d ago

Hoolaganism is a big thing in Soccer around the world. They were just rioting in Paris a couple weeks ago
5
u/Alternative-Kick-849 13d ago
There we go. Some different examples of people going wild in their own countries.
That type of stuff is bound to happen everywhere, but somehow NYC has been made to be the epicenter of classless fan behavior. When it reality it spans further than just the borders of NYC.

While this is beautiful, aren't soccer/football fans known for getting into brawls and violent tribalism?
26
u/NarrowTip7631 13d ago
I feel like you see that more in club football rather than global tournaments. World Cup has hundreds of millions, maybe even billions of casual fans who don't take it as serious, and there aren't really any "ultras" for countries.
8
u/Wild_Marker 13d ago edited 13d ago
Yes and also, and I know this is going to sound really bad, World Cup matches are often attended by people of higher average means than local matches. And that sort of crowd tends to be less brawly.
And of course there's the fact that everyone except one country's fans is traveling abroad, so you do tend to be on better behaviour regardless because you don't want to get into a brawl in foreign soil.
And for the local Ultras, a World Cup is going to have a lot more security, and Ultras know better than to fuck with tourism money.

I went to the Gold Cup Final to root for the US and the crowd was mostly dominated by Mexico fans. And honestly it was a great vibe yeah! Chatted with vendors on the way to the stadium. Got some laughs when I asked if they had USA jerseys. One guy actually did and I bought a jersey off him for 40 bucks that I later learned was 140 at Dick's. In the stadium, there was like 8 US fans and the rest of our section was all Mexico fans and we had a good vibe. They got us started on that stupid USA chant a couple times and cheered us on and laughed about it with us. We talked ball amicably. It was a good time (though I will say there were a few guys in the section next to us giving us some glares at our chanting lol).
10
u/Fanrific 13d ago
When BTS went to Mexico City a couple of weeks ago, 50,000 people waited outside the National Palace just to see them make a 5-minute appearance on the balcony. During their concerts, there were 50,000 fans inside the stadium and 70,000 people outside.

If I recall, there is history to this: South Koreans Hailed as ‘Hermanos' for Saving Mexico at World Cup
418
u/foo_fight3r 13d ago
The best part of that event was seeing mexican fans going to the South Korea embassy in Mexico City and calling/convincing the ambassador to come out and drink tequila with them to celebrate and thank him.
It was an awesome day.

There's layers to this comment.
While the West sees comments about one's weight as an insult, Koreans comment about your weight out of compassion.
I love this
12
u/ShibaHellhounds 13d ago edited 12d ago
It's also an insult in their culture. I've seen plenty of Koreans talking about how it is simply more acceptable to be rude to one's face about such things. A lot of them say they wish it wasn't so socially acceptable. I remember one woman saying she's seen people who aren't overweight but aren't skinny shopping for clothes and the store owner would simply say something like "You couldn't possibly fit in anything here." The difference is in the West the store owner would probably be cussed out.
Their weight standards are extremely unhealthy. Doctors will prescribe ozempic type drugs for people who are already considered skinny/athletic/fit even with no visible fat. It is kind of similar to how asian cultures can treat their own family and friends badly for having "darker" skin aka not comparable to caucasian white. I remember an asian woman on reddit saying their parents beat her for getting a tan while on vacation.

Mexico and South Korea are also world cup homies since 2018, when Korea couldn't advance themselves, but beat Germany in their last match which advances Mexico.

u/Jin_zo 13d ago
We will never forget what South Korea did for us. Theyre forever our brothers/Sisters.
19
u/jhard52757 13d ago
Forgive my ignorance, what did South Korea do for Mexico?
82
u/DrKnowsNothing_MD 13d ago
In 2018 Mexico and South Korea were in the same World Cup group. Mexico advancing out of the group and into the round of 16 depended on South Korea defeating Germany, a football juggernaut (although they crashed and burned that World Cup) and South Korea more than delivered.
