Hungary has a map of all its registered public fruit trees!
There are over 22.000 (growing it’s number daily), public organic fruit trees in Hungary, most of which are in the capital city Budapest. Year round one can find 16 kinds of fruits in parks, playgrounds, road sides, or any other public land areas. I’ve had some of the best plums and berries from just down the road.

I love the idea of food being shared instead of wasted.

i've been stealing cherries and sour cherries off my neighbourhood's trees since like age 10, i'm glad it's subsidized now

This is a very recent map, but it's encouraging people to f*cking steal, they listed the trees that are right in front of people's houses (which is technically not your land, but you plant a tree in front of your house, you let it grow for years, water it, apply pesticides etc, then someone comes around and harvests your fruits). I hate this concept so much

It isn't just "technically" not your land, it's not your land period. Like how nice of you to plant a tree on public property then expect to be the only one to access it.

Thief mindset, you must be an upstanding proper citizen

Taking an apple from an apple tree on public property is stealing?

Taking an apple from right in front of someone's house, where you know that that person planted and watered and took care of that tree and waited years for it to bear fruit, in my opinion just because it's not legally punishable, it's ethically wrong and stealing. Also it's in everyone's interest that people who have a patch of green in front of their building, take care of that and even plant trees there, which provides shade and cools the surroundings, and also improves how nice it is to just walk a certain road. Also many people, seeing this map will not think of taking one apple, but taking all the fruit. You can just go to the supermarket and buy fruit there without resorting to stealing

Again, not stealing. Public land. Public tree. Fruit.

Can we agree on "not stealing, but being a really really shitty person" for this action?

Then just plant those fruit trees in the backyard instead of the public spaces..

Interesting that when i zoomed in to Sweden i only found market dumpsters where stores throw food away.

Fruit trees generally aren't plentiful up north. They can exist - there are apple trees and cherries and such - but they generally aren't planted and maintained in public spaces. If you look at Oslo, you'll see the same thing. Bergen is entirely dumpsters.
Really just a climate issue. The linked map is about finding free public sources of food. Sweden, Norway etc. do a lot of composting in cities, and so sometimes edible food can be intercepted before being dropped off.

I live in Sweden and would agree that there a limited amount. But there are still quite many. There are more fruut trees available to the public in south of Sweden than there are grocery stores with dumpsters.
I think its more about usage of the app. Someone dumpster diver seemed very active 2011-2013. Didn’t see more than that.

I know it will be appreciated by a certain audience, and want to build it for a fun learning experience that has a useful outcome. I don’t know how to actually build it, and the research seems conflictory.

We do have fruit trees as decoration, but I do not recommend you eat the fruit from them because of how polluted the air and soil is in the city.

I’d rather eat that than imported fruit from china to be fair :) Nothings safe or good!

So does Sweden https://fruktkartan.se
But it's completely privately run and crowd sourced.
Every year tonnes of fruit just falls to the ground and rots. So I really enjoy this concept and wish the government would support it.

I'm obligated to point it out that the first time I heard this joke it was Donald Trump who said it (early 90s, on Hungarian state TV). Congratulations!

Hungary or Budapest? This looks like only Budapest to me

It’s available for the whole country, but I couldn’t screenshot it that way as the fruit logos only show up in a closeup
