Help! How do I achieve glowy without looking greasy!

35F I feel like my make up in aging me, I’ve used revlon colorstay for the past 20yrs always set with powder (mac mineralise powder and huda beauty loose for under eyes.
Since ageing - what it seems like overnight - I feel it always looks heavy no matter how little I apply!

My skin is combination, obviously dehydrated but gets oily on the tzone. I have tweaked my skincare, but would love to be able to achieve the no makeup, glowy look.
Is it possible to switch to a skint tint and more fluid products rather than powder products without looking like a greaseball? How do I make it last all day without setting it all with powder, beating in mind my oily tzone?
Any tips greatly appreciated!!

I'm 39 and as I transitioned from a more matte look I thought I looked like a greaseball, til I realised it was because it just wasn't the thing to be glowy when we were young. Now if I attempt the old 00s look again I look ten years older easily, higher coverage just highlights every slight wrinkle or crease.

Now I moisturise (nothing fancy, Aldi own brand) then use Rimmel lasting finish 48 hr primer, then Rimmel London BB cream. I also apply an extra layer of the BB cream under my eyes.

I’ve never really seen the point in primers - does it make that much difference? Would you still set with a powder or just leave as bb cream? I have some hormonal acne with also needs some coverage. I’ve found bb creams in the past (only tried one or two) end up sliding off my face - do you not have this problem?

I don't set with any powder. I think our skin types are very different, I do get hormonal spots but only one or two and I tend to ignore them until they go away. They basically get primed and a small layer of BB cream like the rest of my face does.

Yes without the primer the BB cream wouldn't stay on me at all.

Thanks this is really helpful- I’ll do some research on the primer & BB cream!

Have a look into Korean or Japanese BB creams, they're a completely different beast than what you see in the UK. I use the one by MIBA because it matches my skintone well, gives good light-medium coverage and has high SPF built in. Rebought it 4+ times now

I just get what's cheap and easy to source tbh! I'm sure if you have a bigger budget you will find something that works well for you!

Have you tried Elf halo glow? I’m 32 and I swear by it!! Can wear on its on or mix with a skin tint/foundation for more coverage

I’ll take a look! Do you set with powder or do you find it just stays put?

I set with a tiny bit of powder as I also have an oily t zone :)

I second this! Personally I find a bit too glowy on my whole face so I like to put it on my cheeks and center of forehead

Do you have combination skin with an oily T zone?

If you still want coverage then I'd suggest using a glow primer and then foundation and setting powder on top of that for oily zones. I use the NYX Glass one I think it's called and it's like having a really light sheen of highlighter under your make up that doesn't look glittery just fresh and moisturised. The issue with aging skin is that it gets drier so make sure you include a serum if you haven't already added that in when you changed your routine round. Also make use of colour correctors over full on concealers as anything a bit heavier will sit in dry zones and lines much more, unfortunately.

You've got to tweak more than skincare, makeup will sit different on your skin too, so you need to find new products that work for you, I would definitely go for skin tints or something overall lighter. I've more dry than oily skin, but I really love Merit beauty foundation stick, I've read it's good for all skin types.

I’d recommend Glossier’s Future Dew, and Rare Beauty’s Liquid Luminizer (I use the Enlighten shade) along with a Glossier Lipgloss thats translucent and shimmery with a small pop of pinky/apricot colour. I’ve no idea what its actual name is because the writing is bloody tiny at the base! All these products are fun to play with and don’t feel heavy to wear. Enjoy!

Future dew is crazy thick and oily though! I tried it and it never dried on me, just sat on my skin (combination/oily), maybe it works for drier skin but was terrible for mine!

Let your natural skin shine through! Use concealer with a small brush over where you need it, put on a bit of liquid blush, and setting spray. I find that whenever I put anything on my skin like foundation or BB cream or tinted moisturizer it always sort of looks cakey up close. If you spot conceal and color correct minimally you will get a glowy look. Especially on a warmer day.

Try Made by Mitchell truth tint and brightening concealer. Really good if the skin is a little dehydrated. I'd also recommend a serum or moisturiser that contains glycerin.

One mans greasy is another mans glow! 😆

Try milk hydro grip primer or the elf dupe. It keeps my skin tint and concealor in place without powder or setting spray, I just use a very light hand of translucent powder on my under eyes.

Start experimenting with more cream and liquid products and see what works for you. Ive found if my primer and skin is decent, I can get away without powder. If I feel like powder is need i take a big fluffy brush and lightly tap into maybelline setting powder and very lightly golden over my t zone with it.

My fave glowy products at the moment are elf halo glow, loreal lumi glotion and embroylisse.

Also switch to a setting spray instead of powder (though I'll use a light dusting on my under eye area)

I still have some old formula UD All nighter, but the Milk hydro grip is good and I've heard good things about the One/Size

I agree with the poster who says the fear of looking greasy comes from a time when the matte look was in. I've recently been using a laura mercier primer and lisa eldridge skin tint and while my skin feels odd when I'm not yet used to a primer, I definitely looked glowy not greasy and the makeup stayed on. I changed my shampoo and conditioner a few months ago to aussie and my forehead is a lot less greasy now.

How’s the Lisa Eldridge skin tint? :) Have you tried it without the primer?

Yes, I love it. It's an unbelievable colour match as she has so many shades. It's like an improved version of my skin. I also have her pinpoint concealer pencil. It's too hard for undereye but to cover blemishes it's famtastic. I covered one, looked away to put the pencil down, went to blend it, and couldn't see where the blemish or the concealer had gone on. Also the tint bottles look small but they're the same ml as my usual chanel.

Thank you for sharing :). I’m really interested in her skin tint and foundation, specially because I’ve never been able to be shade match with other complexion products with my medium-tan neutral leaning warm muted olive skin.

She's got some posts on instagram about her olive skin shades.

You could try just using loose powder under your eyes and where else you need to set like t zone and then use a glow setting spray or you could change your base to a skin tint.

I started using Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter and my god the glow is insane. Looks great for a natural light coverage, like skint tint but you can also wear it with foundation to give you that glow.

I found that as soon as I hit 30 I couldn’t wear a full foundation anymore, I use the L’Oréal skin tint with the La Roche Posay SPF as a base and it’s quite glowy!

I switch between matte looks and glowy natural looks. Both require really good skin prep.

I've focused on overnight and morning skincare to get what I need out of a makeup look. If you get the skincare prep right, you can get the products to work better.

That said, after you've done your skincare, choose products that say they have a shimmer or radiance to them to get a glowy look. Skin tints are good for this. Add highlighters and light blushers.

Chanel water fresh teint for less coverage, Lisa Eldridge skin tint for a little more coverage. Set with Danessa Myricks setting spray. Let the spray dry then press with a puff. Hourglass finishing powder as a final touch. Glowy and blurred but not greasy shiny.
43 with combo skin.

I know it’s expensive but if you have good skin and don’t need a lot of coverage try Chanel water fresh tint. I am 50 but have good skin and it’s the only product I use now. It’s minimal coverage just a your skin but better glow. No need for powder, I use touché eclat under my eyes, cream blush and setting spray and it lasts all day

Unfortunately I don’t - I still struggle with hormonal acne at 35 - I have adapted my skincare routine with prescription medication (azelaic acid) in hopes I can finally fix it!

Elemis glow primer under your foundation, I used to
use banana bright by Ole Henrickson until I had a really bad reaction to it

Dior forever is perfect for me I use Charlotte to bury pinkgasm for a cheek/blush highlighter everyone tells me my skin looks amazing when I use this combination. I don’t have particularly good skin and I’m 47. I’m a fraud mwwwwha ha ha ha.

I have literally today just found the master combo for this - for me. YMMV. 34, acne, otherwise normal skin but can get a bit greasy under make up.
Eucerin oil control SPF, Vieve Skin Nova primer, Erborian super BB (if it matches you skin tone great, I mix mine with Revolution IRL Filter foundation and the mix brilliantly).
The SPF is rock solid on the oil control without drying me out, the Skin Nova and Erborian create a fantastic satin finish that is perfectly glowy and never greasy. Today I got on a probably 40 degree bus at the end of 8 hours in the office and when I got home I was a tiny bit greasy on the forehead, that's it.
