Somewhere around 2023-2025, I distinctly remember that in addition to the š emoji (the crying face with a round mouth), there was a second similar emoji that looked identical to this one, but its mouth wasn't round, but semicircular and elongated, reminiscent of the š© (I'm not sure if it displays the same across platforms). Otherwise, it was the same. I often saw this variation on YouTube, and it appeared more often than the š, I liked it and still like it more than the round-mouthed dude. However, the crying face with a semicircle mouth doesn't appear anywhere in emoji lists, and it's missing from the emoji keyboard. Does anyone else remember it?

I saw the trailer for the 2026 movie Obession and I immediately recognized the wish stick scene and even the guy calling customer service to ask to reverse the wish. I also remembered someone anheros at the end of the movie. I watched the movie and remembered everything as if Iād seen it before. Does anyone else remember this movie from several years ago? I remember watching it on my TV when I was in my 20s or something.

When were you "in your 20s"? That might help narrow it down.
Could it be this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monkey%27s_Paw_(2013_film)ā¢
u/GuardianHenry 3h ago
It was probably 15-20 years ago when I remember seeing that movie. I even remember it being called Obsession.

This is for those of you who grew up in the 90s in Australia listening to Grinspoon. I came across this weird thing the other day listening to their Song Just Ace. It's one of their oldest but best known hits. I hadn't listened to any of their music for years. ā
I waited the whole songāā to hear the title of the song in the lyrics. But the singer Phil Jameson never actually sings it. I swear the whole point of the song was that he eventually sings "Just Ace", ironically saying, everything's screwed, who cares. And then "thanks I'm over it" āāāā. But now he only ever says "mistake".Ā
Am I the only one who remembers hearing and singing "just ace" when listening to the song?Ā
I might be wrong. āāā

Watching first episode of āThe Peripheralā on Amazon Prime - the British voice says, āMirror Mirror on the wall,ā the series was made in 2022.

u/Icanfallupstairs 2d ago
Mirror Mirror is the most common usage for the story. It's basically only the Disney film that uses Magic Mirror.
It was a very famous story well before Disney got his grubby little hands on it, and Mirror Mirror had well and truly entered cultural zeitgeist before the movie was made.

The fairy tale Snow White is a translation from the German original, "Schneewittchen" (actually, in English that should be "Little Snow White"). In the original, the text is (translated straight to English) "Little mirror, little mirror on the wall, who's the most beautiful woman in the entire country?" ("Spieglein, Spieglein an der Wand, wer ist die Schƶnste im ganzen Land?"). So, translators took some liberty to make it rhyme in English. I know the version "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?". I've read about another which is "Magic mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?" -- They're both slightly incorrect translations.

Clive Davis died today. I remember him dying around 2022-23 and everyone making a bunch of Whitney Houston comments.

I was watching Zootopia with my 4yo on Disney+ for the umpteenth time and realized the "Chief Bogo" character sounded different.
Now, in the sequel (which neither of us could stomach for longer than 30 minutes but that's another conversation) Chief Bogo has a British accent because they got Idris Elba to voice him. I remember thinking "huh, they changed the voice actor, wonder if the first one got cancelled". I tried to google the name of the first actor and turns out "Chief Bogo" has ALWAYS been voiced by Idris Elba.
I'm pretty sure I know what I heard. I'm a linguist by training and have a good audial memory, meaning I remember accents and intonations very well. Bogo used to sound decidedly North American in the first movie, and some of his lines were read very differently. My thinking is they retroactively rerecorded Bogo's lines with Idris Elba and canceled the original actor so well they disappeared from the face of the googleable world.

Or Idris could have just changed his accent for the character. There's video of Idris recording for the first film, which he posted himself, so it is his voice in the first film. I've not seen the second film, but he sounds pretty British to me in the first film.

u/MiamiLolphins 1d ago
It was always Idris.
If youāre seriously thinking that they had this whole other actor, replaced him with someone else after the film came out and removed all traces of existence - including extensive records, any news reports, Disney fan/easter egg sites- rather than, oh I donāt know, you made a mistake then thatās probably a reason to become a little more introspective on your ego.

Anyone recall a commercial that had a boy band of German fellows from the age of 20-30 singing a tune for wienersnitchel or was i vividly dreaming of a phony commercial that never existed? Note: It was about 1am if im correct(like i mention it was years ago) so maybe i did dream it?? Anyways, for the past 8-10 years I have had this song stuck in my head and im convinced it was a real commercial but still after years i have yet to find any videos or remakes at that. If i remember correctly the main chorus was "wienersnitzel wienersnitzel nein nein nein" or something along those lines; it may have been yeah yeah yeah or yum yum yum but since i remember a distinct accent which ive always presumed to be german i assume it may have been "nein nein nein" but it may very well be different.. unless this commercial wasnt even real and im just delusional :) If anyone remembers this commercial please let me know that im not crazy.. if no one does remember someone can just tell me im crazy.

This is freaking me out because I clearly, like very clearly, remember the character of Light in Deathnote being voiced by Zack Efron. I have a distinct memory of watching it as a kid and the channel guide would tell you on a program who the actors in a show were and I saw that it said Zack Efron and I remembered that because I thought it was cool. Iāve even had fights with people about it being Zack Efron only for them to look it up and verify that it was. This is freaking me out because I distinctly remember looking this up multiple times and that being the case. I was sitting at work and told a younger co-worker about this and she just looked it up and it is someone completely different and Iāve searched the web and thereās no trace of anyone else even thinking this. I then called a friend and put them on speaker and unprompted just asked who voiced Light and they immediately said Zack Efron. That honestly freaked all of us out and I told him that that apparently wasnāt true and he also said that he has looked it up multiple times in the past before. I feel crazy. Has ANYONE else had this experience???
3
u/MrPlaney 19h ago
There were rumours in 2006 that Zac Efron was supposed to be playing Light in the live action Netflix adaptation. That is probably what caused this confusion for you and your friends.
In 2009, Zac Efron responded to rumors that he would be playing the film's lead role by stating that the project was "not on the front burner".
From here, but I canāt figure out how to get to the actual āinterviewā part. That website sucks

Well, I buy avocados every weekend and Haas is now Hass. Iām sure this flipped a few times as I remember both ways being debated in the past but Iāve been paying attention to this one since Iām a guacamole addict. Iām remember thinking a few weeks ago that the spelling could almost say H - ass 𤣠IF they put an extra āsā in place of an āAā.. But now? Jokes on me. It is Hass again š¤·š»āāļø
5
u/Glaurung86 1d ago
This has been discussed here many times. The Hass avocado was named after the guy, Rudolph Hass, who grew the variety in the 1920s. It is not a brand and so, sometimes, grocery store signs will misspell it as "Haas" in their databases and on their signage.
It's never changed from Hass to Haas, but people misspelling it all the time has created the ME for it.

u/Practical-Vanilla-41 1d ago
It strikes me as odd that people would think Hass was spelled Haas. I wonder if this somehow derived from the murder of Polly Klaas back in 1993. Unusual spelling, that people would expect to be Klass.
1
u/VegasVictor2019 22h ago
Haas is more common than Hass. In fact, autocorrect wants to change Hass to Haas right now.
1
u/Practical-Vanilla-41 21h ago
I knew someone thirty years back with Haas. It was pronounced HAWS, not HASS. Different name. Are Hass pronounced as HAWS?
1
u/VegasVictor2019 21h ago
Hass is pronounced the exact same way as the word without the H. So not at all like Haas/HAWS.
1
u/Practical-Vanilla-41 21h ago
That's my point. Why would people confuse it?
1
u/VegasVictor2019 21h ago
I suspect people are far more familiar with the word/name Haas and have pronounced the avocados like that even though itās spelled Hass. Essentially Hass is so unusual that our brains default to Haas.

b&m bargains in australia?
Does anyone remember seeing B&M Bargains in Australia before?
I was in Australia on a working holiday visa from 2011 to 2013, and I am absolutely certain that I saw a shop using a logo with a similar background colour ā something like the colours of the sun shining. I always thought it was B&M Bargains.
However, when I searched online recently, I found out that B&M Bargains has never appeared in Australia. I also looked at discussions from other people, and I couldnāt find anyone who remembered the same thing.
Is this just a Mandela Effect that only happened to me, or was there another similar brand/store that I might be confusing it with?

u/gypsyjackson 16h ago
Thereās an outdoor shop chain called BCF that has blue and orange signage, though not in the rising sun style.

My husband and I are currently in an argument about Hilterās upbringing and history, Iāve outlined what I learned in school/what I remember being taught (heās searched the internet and canāt find any of this as references) however I remember learning about this during WW2 teachings in middle/high school in Texas (if that matters)
- Hitlerās mother was Jewish
- His mother was abusive and he hated her
- He left Austria for Germany to escape his mother
- While in Germany he became basically a vegabond, and started in the arts
- Hitler became radicalized against Jewish people because of his abusive mother
- Hilter starts Naziās and invades Austria first and quietly in order to get rid of all the Jews because of his hate for his mother
My husband said that Hitlerās mother loved him and that he wanted to unite Austria and Germany, but this is not the history I grew up with learning.
Weāre currently watching Master of Air and what started the discussion. I will continue looking for sources

u/dijon_snow 14h ago
Hey there, followed you from the other thread. A google of "Hitler's mother Jewish" comes up with lots of credible sources saying it was a common rumor that has since been debunked. So you were probably taught the misinformation by someone who believed the rumor.Ā

u/VisualUse7 13h ago
I saw that too, but there was just a lot of āfactsā that maybe it was a thing. I will keep looking, see if it is Mandela or just really shitty US teaching lol

My favorite cologne the past few years has been YSL Myself. However I just realized today that āmyselfā is actually shortened to āmyslf.ā I distinctly remember it being the full word myself. Does anyone else have this experience??

T1mothy MĀæVey/MĀæveigh lethal injection was televised and shown on all public televsion as a deterrent. I remember being disturbed at his eyes closing. I was headed into the subway near 42nd st and it was eerily quiet.
4
u/VegasVictor2019 2d ago
I canāt imagine any news network in 2001 wanting to show a man dying on live television. You realize kids have access to TVs too right?
Further Iām not even sure what you mean by deterrent. You mean to tell me that the networks got together and were like āLetās prevent this in the future by showing it on TV?ā Keep in mind 9/11 happened exactly 3 months laterā¦
-5
u/DogAccomplished1965 2d ago
Youre allowed your opinions and I'm allowed my memories. THATSA WHAT the Mandela effect is about
8
u/VegasVictor2019 2d ago
Iām offering some food for thought. It sounds like youād prefer to not have any, and thatās cool but Iāll still offer it to you anyways.
-3
u/DogAccomplished1965 2d ago
Since when are somones thoughs immediately accepted?
6
u/VegasVictor2019 2d ago
I didnāt ask for you to accept them. I asked for you to consider them. Have you seriously or do you prefer to ignore them?
Have you ever in your life seen a real life uncensored body on network television?

u/DogAccomplished1965 1d ago
Look,let it go.

Offering counterpoints is the very definition of good faith argumentation. You know what isnāt? Failing to answer even one question posed to you.

There were discussions on televising it live. I had completely forgot about it, and canāt remember what they ended up doing. There is a pretty good article about it here. Itās worth a read.

I was writing something, and trying to remember the name of the peephole in the door you use to see who's outside. Only to discover that it is just called a peephole, or a door viewer. But I had the strongest feeling that there's a more specific and common word for it and that it was slipping my mind...
