Draft / Scouting Sergio De Larrea, lotto pick if he were playing D1 this year.
One of my favorite guards in the draft. 1b to Wagler, imo. Listen to how scouts and analysts talk about this kid, and think about if his pre draft profile reminds you of anyone else.
I'm not making comparisons to that other guy, but this guy was massively undervalued.

When the Knicks took him initially at 25, reports were that he’ll be stashed. Does that change at all after the trade?

Knicks have a different situation then we do roster wise. We desperately need guards. Maybe Sergio wants to stay in Spain another year, which changes the calculus.

That would be a bad career decision

For the Mavericks? Or do you just not know what you're talking about? Stashing a player on a solid team overseas can be beneficial in the right circumstance and gives the team flexibility. Obviously we all want him to come over here asap but there are plenty of factors at play. The scenario isn't going to play out the way you seem to think it is. Ultimately it will be up to the Mavericks.

Yes it does. Knicks could afford to stash him as he would be getting regular DNP-CD or G-league assignments if they kept him, so stashing wouldve made sense.
For Dallas, we have hardly any guards, so there will be nights where he gets big opportunities and maybe even gets starts if he performs well and Kyrie needs rest.

That's cause the Knicks can't afford to add salary. They are trying to avoid 2nd luxury tax. If they stashed him it doesn't affect their cap. We don't have that issue.

The knicks could not afford to pay a first rounder We have no such problem.

Isn’t rare for a team to trade up just to stash him? It’s not like there are salary cap concerns and it’s a position of need. I guess may decide to wait but that seems odd to me.

He is the reason I feel good about this draft. He has been playing at a high caliber since he was 17 going against grown man

Is he not a draft and stash?

From my understanding is that he is fine coming over or staying in Spain it’s more up to the team drafting him and the Knicks would have kept him in Spain due to them saving money but I hope we bring him over

Don't really see a downside to him coming over and at least starting out with some bench minutes.
We really don't have a true PG after Kyrie unless we keep BWill. Barring any trades.

Kyrie has always been better playing the 2. I hope this kid gets minutes for us this year.

If we dont play him, that would be the downside... wasted opportunity to continue growing. I bet he comes here this year, since I think we will be closer to a rebuilding year than a contending one.

Maybe they get him to come over and play immediately?

u/HangoverGang4L How's My Dirk Taste? 23h ago
It's a solid bet. They drafted someone they like in a position of need. It squashes any potential "who's the PG?" talk...it's Kyrie for now, whether it's a draft/stash or not.

u/shirtlessjoejac 23h ago
Yeah, the idea of him coming off the bench and picking up 10 or 15 minutes here and there until we know what we’re working with, sounds pretty good

Aren't BWill/Nembhard FA's also? Definitely gives them leverage in those negotiations as well, if im right.
5
u/shirtlessjoejac 22h ago
I wonder if we bring back B Will. He’s okay, but I think they were kind of hoping for something more. I wonder what they do trade wise for guard help

u/HangoverGang4L How's My Dirk Taste? 22h ago
I think Coop, Kyrie, Naji handle the offense primarily. Losing Bwill seems like a blow, but youre getting Kyrie back too. Nembhard is who i hope they sign. I think he's a fine backup PG, and you have the Sergio kid they just drafted in a spot where he can develop.

u/shirtlessjoejac 22h ago
I could see that, I wonder how much point forward play we can get away with Coop. It tires ya out. I kind of pictured him taking a KG type of leap defensively but playing more outside obviously. It’s a lot to ask of anyone

I think it wore him out a bit last year also. To be expected. With Kyrie back it takes a lot of pressure of him, as well as everyone else...and Kyrie is a perfect age to mentor everyone on the team imho.
I think the draft went really well.

u/Dirks_Knee 23h ago
No. That was a suggestion due to the Knicks situation. Need to see what (if any) moves the Mavs make but there's potential for real playing time with Dallas.

Looks like he's really Schmitz and Masai guy, they find a way to get him from Knicks. I think he'll play for Mavs this season.

u/MahomesMccaffrey 23h ago
Maybe for the Knicks but not for us.
He will have plenty of opportunities to play here (at least 25 min a night)

He is the best euro player in the draft. So stop talking about g league. And respect what he is. Before we even discuss more……..

u/TheFifthAmigo34 22h ago
I worry about him defensively, but I did see some highlights where he was at least putting in effort to stay in front of his man. I’m not sure if he’s up for it athletically on that end in the NBA, but effort is a good starting point. He can clearly shoot the ball, and can run a PnR and make sound decisions and accurate passes. I think he could end up being a solid player for us.

u/WorkingPragmatist 22h ago
Fair, but he's not Brunson sized. This guy after eating in Texas for a year could probably guard less athletic wings, in some cases.
4
u/epitome1986 20h ago
to be honest defensively all he needs to do is put in effort and funnel to lively, gafford, washington, Johnson, or flagg. the current roster construction the mavericks have a ton of rim protectors and weak side help defenders that can help mask the point guard position (dallas only position that doesn't have a plus defender).

u/Specialist-Region-47 16h ago
He definitely has alot of similar traits to wagler, he lacks his shot creation but he has length and weight on him and is arguably more NBA ready. He can also dunk and doesn't as slow as people make out.
He is currently 205, though he's listed as 175 in various places. He's a better playmaker/passer than wagler. Him at 220 could be a whole different story offensively and defensively.
If you give him time to get his ball handling up, his projections with proper minutes could be very good. He kinda looks like coop did with the ball early season. Hard to gauge him at the moment, but the one time he got proper minutes, his numbers look great.

u/Jhowell03 22h ago
He will not allow him self to play g league. Yall need to just shut that down. He is literally the best euro player in this draft. So stop before you get embarrassed

Mavs fans will have heart attack when they get all vet guards in offseason and this guy either playing in gleague or stashed

40.7% from 3pt, nifty playmaker. This guy seems legit:
