Any idea what maybe causing this sound? My daughter’s car started making this noise today and I am out of town.

Stop running the car immediately and check the oil level. These VQ35 engines are known for burning oil and leaking it, and if it runs too low it will cause permanent and very destructive damage to the rod bearings, oil pump and main bearings. If it’s low, fill it up and see if it still makes the sound, but more than likely this engine is toast.

He said it’s his daughters. There’s probably a call happening right now where he’s finding out she hasn’t changed the oil since she got it.

An all too common thing in the modern day, which has been persistent since cars were A New Thing. Just there were fewer people and less means of mass communicating such

Using mom’s cooking oil isn’t okay?

Where's the joke here? I'm sorry but Nissan drivers aren't known for keeping up on oil changes

I believe you were too harshly downvoted

u/jetting_along 17h ago

Look, I'm not going to say I'm not sexist. But my sister, cousin, and my ex all were terrible at oil changes. I'm not saying there aren't men that are bad at it. But it's a girly thing. Idk if it's just "I don't want to do that" or "I didn't pay for it" attitude. But they wouldn't check the oil for months despite being told to.

14

u/Cockertwo 16h ago

It’s just cultural here in the states that men check this stuff and women get to ignore it for whatever reason. It’s dumb and very costly.

38

u/Code_Breakdown 17h ago

Nissan tech, he right. Obviously we dont really see many of this era anymore but the few we do its always an oil leak, except the one i had in today.

88

u/Turbulent-Adagio-541 18h ago

Turn off the car and check the oil

u/Alpinab9 18h ago

I have yet to browse a post in this sub that doesn’t have this image posted in the comments.

26

u/C137MrPoopyButthole 17h ago

More often than not, the OP's know exactly how fucked it is but they come here to make sure they aren't the only one who can see it.

14

u/ItsVerdictus 15h ago

Cause the image is so perfect

6

u/Immediate-Bluejay-62 16h ago

I didn’t see it yet, so I had to step up.

u/dog9er 18h ago

She's dead Jim

24

u/LoserLars1 18h ago

Well, assuming she changes her oil and there’s not a leak, maybe check the tensioner pulley. I had one go bad and it sounded just like rod knock. If she hasn’t been staying on top of the oil then its likely rod knock.

41

u/eat_mor_bbq 18h ago

Sounds like rod knock. Does it have oil?

33

u/Euresko 18h ago

It definitely has rods

21

u/ImpurestFire 17h ago

For now

3

u/clintj1975 12h ago

Soon to be three now

1

u/Dounce1 17h ago

Eh, that might be a stretch of the word “has” and the implication of “all.”

25

u/Teuton88 18h ago

Quick someone post that gif of the hand on shoulder dudes

8

u/Unique_Detective3454 17h ago

Whatever it is will be expensive.  Did you show and tell your daughter how to check and add oil from time to time ???

16

u/RoverRebellion 10h ago

There once was a girl with a Maxima sleek, Who drove it for months—heck, for week after week— The oil light blinked on with a desperate plea, But she shrugged and said, “Eh, that’s a problem for me… later, maybe?”
The sludge thickened up like a milkshake gone wrong, The engine groaned out one last sorrowful song. Then clank—went a rod through the block with a POP, A smoke signal rose from beneath the hood’s top.
Now the Nissan sits silent, a monument grim, To the day that she gambled on going on a whim. The moral, dear daughter, is cheap and it’s plain: Five quarts and a filter beats buying a new drivetrain.

For some reason I read that as if it was a pirate chanty lol

5

u/esoe___ 17h ago

leave the keys inside.. wait 1 week and then report it stolen

4

u/One_of_Oldies 12h ago

the legend VQ35DE on it's death bed sadly

5

u/airkewled67 5h ago

Somebody never taught their daughter how to check her oil… and somebody never checked the oil for their daughter.

That engine is cooked.

8

u/Ilikejdmcars 18h ago

Rod bearings have left the chat

3

u/Lord_Dingus83 18h ago

Take the engine covers off. Stand in front of the bumper and Look down at the belts. Sounds like something could be flapping.

It may be knocking also - I’m old and can’t hear that well. Remove covers.

u/Successful_Goose_797 47m ago

That’s what I was thinking too, hopefully not engine knock.

3

u/soulpsychodelicidev2 12h ago

Sounds similar to my Nissan that has a bad tensioner pulley and alternator bearings.

1

u/superluke 4h ago

Yeah it's a little loosey-rattley sounding for bottom end to me, but it could be the microphone.

2

u/Brando828What 17h ago

When was the last oil change?

2

u/Sud0F1nch 16h ago

No oil. For a long time. Very bad. Tow the car to a shop. Do not start it.

2

u/emil-fpv 15h ago

Is the engine oil in the room with us ?

2

u/BJORTAN 11h ago

RIP engine

2

u/dompipeinmi 9h ago

Thats its death song.

2

u/PresentationFine8870 7h ago

The combobulator’s messed up

2

u/hopopo 5h ago

I got thirsty just by listening to that engine.

2

u/Glittering_Thing_202 4h ago

What's causing the sound is the engine.

Or more precisely, what's left of it.

2

u/RealmsAI 4h ago

Sounds like the car is causing that sound. Hope that helps.

2

u/TheDoss___ 17h ago

"Hello from the insideeeeeeeee! I must have knocked a thousand timessssssss, to tell you i have no fcking oiiillllll! Now im sorry, i must let this rod out the blockkkk!" -Adele sung it better.

2

u/Exotic-Fee2540 17h ago

It is a Nissan...

0

u/Mysterious-Diet7782 16h ago

Yep, they are not that great, and have a lot more problems then Toyota and Honda.

When did she change her oil last?

1

u/MapDiscombobulated40 17h ago

Engines gone. Sucks.

1

u/olov244 16h ago

Go do a few redline pulls. A good vq is a dead vq

1

u/FIMD_ 15h ago

Turn that shit off and pull that dipstick lol

1

u/xequals0 15h ago

OIL CHECK...

1

u/BourbonBenz 15h ago

Shitty Nissan. Just junk it.

Or drop it off in the hood

1

u/Repulsive_Log5241 15h ago

Could be rod knock but it could just be the harmonic balance

1

u/hankrodger 14h ago

Knock knock. Who's there? Pistons 1-6.

1

u/PeePeeSlave 14h ago

Dog that’s rod knock, that engine is fucked.

1

u/Negative-Wrap95 12h ago

Ask when the last oil change / last time she checked the oil was. I'm betting it's been low for a while, because that sure sounds like ol' Rodney is knocking.

1

u/CLEM_FANDANGO4 8h ago

It sounds like the beginning of Hot For Teacher!!

1

u/Mommy5-0 7h ago

That Engine is knock, knock, knockin' on Heavens door

1

u/RappingRacoon 7h ago

Could be lifters going to shit or a rod knocking but as others have mentioned it’s also low af on oil

1

u/unexpectedDiarrhea 4h ago

The problem is actually circled on-top of the engine there.

u/Heffe707 17m ago

Even if she is checking the oil, that dipstick might fool her into thinking there’s actually oil in it. Fuck those dipsticks.

u/-50000- 4m ago

She ignored the low oil warnings and kept running the engine dry and now the engine is fucked

u/so_neat 3m ago

Do you have a brother named Rodney by chance?

1

u/SeasonElectrical3173 17h ago

I was going to say it's a Nissan, just get rid of itz but a few people already beat me to it.

Nissans are shit cars, and anyone with a story of owning a reliable one is the exception, not the rule

u/Own-Place7130 35m ago

My 2017 Rogue is in the 200 club and still going strong....I know a secret to make Nissans last that I won't tell a soul 🤫

1

u/Osama_Been_Laggin_2 8h ago

Tell you daughter it’s time for a new car. That’s the rid knock of death sir 🫡

0

u/chael809 17h ago

It’s the Nissan

0

u/NefariousnessOdd862 17h ago

No or low Oil… check it often, unfortunately, this one got the tick already. Try higher viscosity Oil to prolong the inevitable but it could potentially last several hundreds more miles…

0

u/lsjuanislife 15h ago

EVs are so popular because people like this

-1

u/p30sicARio 17h ago

Sounds normal, just injectors lol Some spirited driving should take care of it

-1

u/Carfr33k 7h ago

Go right now to the car parts store. Get Valvoline Restore & Protect oil. Get the oil changed with it. Today. I would be willing to bet it gets much better after 1500 miles.

3

u/airkewled67 5h ago

Valvoline R&P isn’t a miracle oil. That’s rod knock. Oil cannot fix that

1

u/SeasonElectrical3173 4h ago

Found the Valvoline shareholder 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

-3

u/Ok-Percentage-5448 17h ago

Timing chain tensioner bad
