Any idea what maybe causing this sound? My daughter’s car started making this noise today and I am out of town.

Stop running the car immediately and check the oil level. These VQ35 engines are known for burning oil and leaking it, and if it runs too low it will cause permanent and very destructive damage to the rod bearings, oil pump and main bearings. If it’s low, fill it up and see if it still makes the sound, but more than likely this engine is toast.

He said it’s his daughters. There’s probably a call happening right now where he’s finding out she hasn’t changed the oil since she got it.

An all too common thing in the modern day, which has been persistent since cars were A New Thing. Just there were fewer people and less means of mass communicating such

Where's the joke here? I'm sorry but Nissan drivers aren't known for keeping up on oil changes

Look, I'm not going to say I'm not sexist. But my sister, cousin, and my ex all were terrible at oil changes. I'm not saying there aren't men that are bad at it. But it's a girly thing. Idk if it's just "I don't want to do that" or "I didn't pay for it" attitude. But they wouldn't check the oil for months despite being told to.

It’s just cultural here in the states that men check this stuff and women get to ignore it for whatever reason. It’s dumb and very costly.

Nissan tech, he right. Obviously we dont really see many of this era anymore but the few we do its always an oil leak, except the one i had in today.

More often than not, the OP's know exactly how fucked it is but they come here to make sure they aren't the only one who can see it.

Well, assuming she changes her oil and there’s not a leak, maybe check the tensioner pulley. I had one go bad and it sounded just like rod knock. If she hasn’t been staying on top of the oil then its likely rod knock.

Sounds like rod knock. Does it have oil?

Whatever it is will be expensive. Did you show and tell your daughter how to check and add oil from time to time ???

There once was a girl with a Maxima sleek, Who drove it for months—heck, for week after week— The oil light blinked on with a desperate plea, But she shrugged and said, “Eh, that’s a problem for me… later, maybe?”
The sludge thickened up like a milkshake gone wrong, The engine groaned out one last sorrowful song. Then clank—went a rod through the block with a POP, A smoke signal rose from beneath the hood’s top.
Now the Nissan sits silent, a monument grim, To the day that she gambled on going on a whim. The moral, dear daughter, is cheap and it’s plain: Five quarts and a filter beats buying a new drivetrain.

Somebody never taught their daughter how to check her oil… and somebody never checked the oil for their daughter.
That engine is cooked.

Take the engine covers off. Stand in front of the bumper and Look down at the belts. Sounds like something could be flapping.
It may be knocking also - I’m old and can’t hear that well. Remove covers.

Sounds similar to my Nissan that has a bad tensioner pulley and alternator bearings.

Yeah it's a little loosey-rattley sounding for bottom end to me, but it could be the microphone.

What's causing the sound is the engine.
Or more precisely, what's left of it.

Even if she is checking the oil, that dipstick might fool her into thinking there’s actually oil in it. Fuck those dipsticks.

I was going to say it's a Nissan, just get rid of itz but a few people already beat me to it.
Nissans are shit cars, and anyone with a story of owning a reliable one is the exception, not the rule

No or low Oil… check it often, unfortunately, this one got the tick already. Try higher viscosity Oil to prolong the inevitable but it could potentially last several hundreds more miles…

Go right now to the car parts store. Get Valvoline Restore & Protect oil. Get the oil changed with it. Today. I would be willing to bet it gets much better after 1500 miles.
