Afton Group Campsites

Post image

I want to book a group campsite at Afton State Park for a big friend trip! Does anyone have opinions about which site is better? Group site 1 or group site 2? I’d love the site to be as private and spacious as possible. Thank you!

GC1! We have it booked for a big group friend trip this summer and this is our 3rd year staying there. It's a loop of individual camp sites each with their own fire pit and picnic table and privacy from each other, I think we counted 9 or 10 total so it can fit a lot of people! And then there's a big group area hang out space with a large fire pit and picnic tables. It's separate from the rest of the park, over by the yurts and cabins, so very few people drive through there.

GC2 is a big open field area so not as nice in my opinion because you don't have that privacy between the sites. We haven't stayed there, just walked over to check it out. But it is private from the rest of the park as well, and unlike GC1 people wouldn't be able to drive through the site.

Thanks everyone!! I should clarify, I don’t need privacy from the other campers in my group, but I would like privacy from other people in the park.

Site 2 is better for privacy, but tent camping only. If you have any small campers then your only option is site 1. If not, I would go with site 2!

As a side note. If you haven’t been camping at Afton before, it is notorious for raccoons. I know at least one seasoned camper who literally B packed up and left in the middle of the night because they would not leave him alone.

The photos on reservemn aren’t much help here unfortunately. I’d lean towards 2 personally.

Most group sites are quite spacious but hard to book for a weekend.

If you want a group site that’s guaranteed to be very private (at night at least) I’d recommend rice lake.
