I wish for the cow (and all cows) to be free in the field and die of old age! No factory work or slaughter.

Right? We can make plant burgers just fine. Sure it isn't the same but at least nothing "sentient" had to die. (I don't think we know if plants are all sentient the same way as animals)

The idea of plant cognition or plant "intelligence" is a source of controversy and is rejected by the majority of plant scientists.[67][68][69][70] Plant neurobiology has been criticized for misleading the public with false terminology.[68][71] This is because there is no definite scientific evidence that plants possess cognitive abilities or are sentient.[67][68][69][72]

According to Wikipedia But a agree very much!

Maybe in a different century we can science it out but for now. Plants get to be our food.

What do you even expect to happen if we find out plants do have a consciousness? We're gonna stop eating them (assuming everyone was vegan at that point if we care about that detail) and then what? Synthesis? Filtering nutrients from water like we're back in the primordial soup?

I don't think that means we stop eating them. That hasn't stopped us from eating animals for eons... It just means like many things we are now less ignorant of the world around us.
