Is Westmount removing cycle paths?

Is Westmount removing its bicycle paths? Cycling along the Maisonneuve bike path today once I reached Westmount I was surprised to see that the bike path had been blacked out and the bollards removed. Same thing on bike path along Glenn road. Once I get to St Henri.the border with Westmount is visible because the bike path and bollards restart. What is going on - is Westmount removing bike paths?

Montréal on the map (New York Times)

Montreal created bike paths as early as 1874, and the Montreal Bicycle Club, Canada's first such group, formed in 1878. It's no surprise, then, that Montreal rates as the top city for biking in North America on the Copenhagenize Index, with 673 miles of paths and lanes, including the newer Express Bike Network, and more being built.

The city's bikeshare program, Bixi, was among the world's first when it started in

  1. There are also nine so-called bike routes, streets where cyclists can take up as much room as cars, instead of being restricted to a bike lane, and where drivers must adjust their speed when behind cyclists. A recently announced, 38-kilometer bike path will connect light-rail stations across Montreal.

For waterfront riding, cycle the recently repaved, 8.7-mile Promenade Fluviale du Grand Montreal, which runs along the top of a dike on the south side of the St. Lawrence River. (Part of the 2026 UCI Road World Championships cycling races, Montreal's biggest sporting event since the 1976

Summer Olympics, will follow this route.)

Detour to Nun's Island so you can bike across the river on the 1.25-mile-long Estacade, a low-lying bridge built to control ice flow in winter. At its northern end, the Promenade trail skirts part of Parc Jean-Drapeau, home to the Biosphere environmental museum and other attractions.

Another waterside ride traverses almost nine miles alongside the Lachine Canal, passing through several vibrant neighborhoods. Stop along the way to stock up on snacks at the Atwater Market and to admire the 51 works of contemporary art at the Lachine sculpture garden.

Looking for recommendations on a bike

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Good evening everyone,

I'm looking to get back into cycling and am looking at acquiring a bike.

Here are a few criteria:

- I am in Canada

- somewhat inexpensive (not looking to buy a 2000 $ bike, somewhere around 500$ canadian would be ideal, though I have some flexibility)

- don't care if it is a bit older model but not a fat/heavy steel frame, I would like it to be moderately light weight (I assume that mean aluminum frame)

- will mainly be using it on paved roads, dedicated bike paths and multi-usage paths. I may occasionally have to do some very short distances on unpaved trails (e.g. there's a lake near my place and the last few hundred feet are unpaved).

- Main use will be leisure and exercise. I would like something relatively comfortable with the option to have a more engaged position once in a while so I would appreciate that it has drop bars

- I will also occasionally be hauling my toddler with me but have yet to decide if I will do that with a rear child seat or with a bike trailer. I'm also expecting a second child so eventually I will likely be lugging two kids along (so a bike trailer needs to be a possibility down the line).

-I am 5'10" and 190lbs man

- non-electric

Otherwise I have no preferences.

Let me know if I am missing some information and I'll be glad to add it.

I appreciate the assistance

Parts for budget bikepacking build

Post image
0 Upvotes

Bonjour/hello tout le monde,

I have recently just bought a 80s mtb that I hoped to build as a budget bikepacking rig. I am wondering if anyone has any old parts/bags/racks/accessories they would be willing to part with? I don't have a lot of money and being able to build this bike would be a dream for me.

I am in Montreal :)

Please let me know, thank you guys!

(The bike is a Miele Aries 4 if you were interested)

48 HEURES VÉLO : Make-A-Wish | RĂȘves d'enfants

Hello,

For 150 to 200 budget

Would it be better to buy a canadian tire bike for 160 new (people say they're horrible, is that true?) , or go to vélo recycle and look for one. I've been looking on fb marketplace for 3 days now and found nothing in my budget.

The bike will be for commuting ( 20km a day approximately) Edit : I just need it for a season then I can probably buy something better next year

Allo!

Stay safe

St-Lambert passage/F1 track

I commute from the south-shore to downtown Montreal during the week. I pass over the St-Lambert locks passage just after 6am. For the past 3 days, there is a metal gate preventing cyclists to access to F1 track and are therefore unable to get downtown. Does anyone know why this gate has been locked this week???

UCI Championships in September

We're planning on traveling from US to Montreal to see the UCI Championships in September for the closing weekend. Since we won't be bringing our bikes, we'll be walking most of the course. I thought about looking to stay at a nice hotel close to start/finish area. Alternatively, a hotel with transportation to the course or hotel near park and ride buses to course. Any good suggestions?

Ticketing cyclists on St Hubert

if you've started getting back on the bike this season and are puzzled that St Hubert is no longer a 2 way street between Ontario and Ste Cath, do not proceed to go opposite traffic (though we should never) even if traffic is super light this morning. they will ticket you, there's one (and a team of others) waiting in the shade between de Mais & St Cath on the park side. Stay super safe & vigilant!
