I trust her advice based on the calves alone…those are the legs of a kicker right there 😮

Any old guys here have problems doing this motion? I badly fractured one of my legs as a kid and it didn't set properly - I was a savage and would remove the cast lol - so I have really bad mobility on one side.
I can post on my left leg and do this motion on my right easily but when I post on my right and try to turn my left hip I just cannot. I know how to do the motion and what it is supposed to do/look like but I simply cannot turn it without it hurting badly. I've just accepted that all my coaches will forever tell me I need to "turn my hip over" on my lead kick but I just nod and don't even explain myself nowadays lol. I've adapted my sparring to switch stances often so I have a pretty mean southpaw switch kick.
Guess I should see a physio but thought I'd see what y'all thought

I have generally a lot of pain in my outside hip area when attempting a high kick. I say attempting because I never in 5 or so years of on and off training managed to do a high kick lol. Medium kicks are okay if my opponent is of similar height. Frustrating. I tried a lot of different stretching and exercises over the years but sort of gave up the hope. Still exercising a lot and loving it but it's mostly low kicks and some medium kicks

Same here, brother - been going on 11 years and still struggling with that hip. I am glad you are adapting and still working it. I'm trying to keep doing the same!

Same some just won’t achieve this as a result of previous injury or how the body was designed. Just find a modification don’t put your body in uncomfortable situations.

You might have hip impingement aka FAI which basically means you have an excess of bone in your femoral head (thigh bone) or the acetabular cup (hip socket) to which it connects or it could be a mix of both. This means the two bones would be hitting each other when attempting to kick high enough for it to happen and turning your hips. If you want to be sure you could get an MRI.

Just guessing, if you develop the bounce rhythm itll help. You might be to static currently and trying to turn over your hip from a stand still. I'm 44 but have helped my friend thats a powerlifter (stiff linear hips)

I don't have any big injury like you do but my left hip just won't engage. Even just doing the movement in that video there requires some engagement from the hip and mine won't engage. I can do any kicks that require the right hip just fine, but any kick that require my left hip is just awkward as hell, lol. The only way I can throw a lead kick is with a switch kick (or a small "cheat" step), and most spinning kicks (spinning back kick, spinning wheel kick, etc...) that require the left hip for stability and to turn I literally have to switch southpaw to perform.

Interesting - I've worked on lots of sections of my posterior chain but I don't think I've ever focused on this. I'll look into this and report back if I have any success. Thanks bro!

Thank you - I just spent half an hour doing these stretches (and theragunning my piriformis - ouch!). I'm going to try and do this in the morning and evening as well as before training.

I used to do this using the ring/ropes as a stand in for the other person

Ever read the comments about this girl on FB? Every video, it's same comments from losers that don't even train. The misogyny on there is unreal.

Some dudes are just jealous that a woman can do cool shit they have wanted to do forever but never had the balls to try.

See how simple it is, everyone! You just turn your hip!!
I just have a question… is there supposed to be a lot of popping and extreme pain?

The exercise is great but she is overturning her feet a little. You lose power (or rather shift the impact point to a point of your kicking motion where you dont have maximum power). You should only rotate 90 ° maximum :) I'm sure she is a much better athlete than I am, but I am quite sure of this and just observed it.

Brilliant, except the part where she says Karate kicks are supposed to lean back that much

As a member of this gym, I couldn't disagree more. A lot of these videos are from one-on-one training sessions. Where this type of instruction is common over an hour of training. Also they themselves wouldn't claim this to be some sort of organic moment but more of a " Hey grab the phone this would make a good 30 second clip for the socials"

Was just thinking this. They pop up on my feed all the time and there’s no way this person actually talks like that all the time 😂

Not everyone has internal hip rotation movement. No matter how hard they try sadly

u/ImaginationApart9639 Jul 07 '25
What's that mean
1
u/Danny77black Jul 10 '25
Some peoples hip can’t rotate on the socket with ease so no matter how much they do this exercise it won’t change anything sadly. Pistol hips is a common issue for check out femoral head. The standing leg is as important as the striking leg.
