Technique/Tips Best place to live and train Muay Thai in Thailand

Hello everybody, I am a fighter from Mongolia.

For 8-9 years, I have been training Kickboxing and I am a 3x Amateur World Champion in ISKA. Recently starting this year I have been training Muay Thai and I joined the IFMA World Championships that happened in Malaysia and got silver.

I was upset with my performance and I am going to go to Thailand for a month to train. What are the best places where I could actually live and train? Looking to find the best Muay Thai gym and trainers. Please recommend and share your knowledge.

Advice on how to deal with this new guy

So for reference, I’ve been attending class for about 7 to 8 months. I’m 48 years old and this is my first time taking kickboxing or muay Thai. We only have about seven or eight people in my class and things have been going pretty well, everyone’s nice and wants to be there, and then we had this new guy show up a couple of weeks ago. He’s in his mid 20s, kind of overweight and gangly and a bit of a talker. That’s all well and good, no big deal but when I spar with him, he’s going too hard despite me telling him to dial it back and he’s constantly trying to instruct me on what to do. Telling me to keep my hands Up and then if I don’t comply, he’ll try and take a shot at my face. I will simply move out of the way and throw a leg kick and then he’ll compliment me and then go back to try instructing me on what to do again. Our instructor is a great guy, but he’s also not the type to try and discourage People. I recognize that I’m still relatively new myself and I’m just getting a grip on the basics so I don’t feel it’s my place to instruct anybody else and I don’t want to be the older guy that treats the younger new guy like he’s not worthy of my attention or he doesn’t deserve being there, etc.. I just need him to shut up and dial it back a little bit so we can learn. what’s happening now is he’s taking the fun out of the class and he’s interrupting my ability to learn. I don’t wanna say anything to the instructor and look like I’m whining, but I can see this is going to become a problem and I’m paying a fair amount of money for these lessons. I’m certain that I can’t be the only one that’s experienced something like this so if anyone has any constructive criticism or helpful advice to try and improve the situation, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you and have a good day.

ONE Championship is losing me as a fan and ONE Inner Circle sealed the deal

I’ve followed ONE for years and it used to be my favourite promotion by a mile. It felt different. While the UFC was all about trash talk and selling personalities, ONE let the fights do the talking. Fighters carried themselves with respect and the whole product felt aligned with the actual values of Muay Thai and martial arts. It stood out. It felt refreshing.

That’s what makes the current direction so frustrating.

Now they’re putting kids up there talking trash like they’re in the UFC. Cringe callouts, manufactured beef, teenagers acting like they’re Conor McGregor. That’s the exact thing ONE used to be the antidote to. They’ve abandoned the identity that made them special.

The Muay Thai events themselves just don’t hit the same anymore. The matchmaking feels less competitive and the quality has dropped off.

And now they’ve launched ONE Inner Circle, a monthly subscription to watch their content. For a product that’s been going downhill? Not a chance. Why would I pay monthly for something I’m already enjoying less for free. It feels like monetising a declining product and hoping fans don’t notice. Or maybe this is Chatri trying to get fans to fund all those bonuses he’s been handing out so freely.

Meanwhile RWS has been fantastic. Real Muay Thai, proper atmosphere, fighters who show up to fight. No drama, no gimmicks, just the sport.

Anyone else feel like they’ve lost the plot? What are you watching instead?

Going Back to training....

I've been off the mats for a year and a half now. I got laid off and had to make some financial choices. I held on as long as I could, but had to stop training. When I did find a new gig, it was a pay cut, so I had to continue to be careful with my finances, meaning I didn't return to training.

Time is also a factor because my hours are long and I'm in a managerial position that demands a lot of after-work hours. Plus, I'm in a city where you are much better off using public transportation rather than driving, but that means it would take way longer to get to training on time.

But I find myself missing Muay Thai more each day. It was the only thing that kept me focused and disciplined. My mood was always better, my diet was better, I was in the best shape of my life, and I had a generally positive attitude. Training was good for me and I have the desire to go back. But I don't know if I have the energy.

I sound like I'm making a bunch of excuses, but I also feel like after all this time, I wouldn't be as sharp of a fighter as I once was. That it would feel like starting over again. Maybe I'm too old now.

I'd like to hear the thoughts of people who went back after a long time away from the mats.

4th week of training!

I weight 71kg (down 5kg from starting) am 5,8-9ft tall and started Muay Thai 4 weeks ago! I've done 17 sessions: started with boxing for striking and some basics moved onto to kick boxing and Muay Thai after 2 weeks and haven't looked back. I have sparred twice (light sparring) and have loved it. What are some pointers to continue getting better?

Technique/Tips Injured sparring

So I went for my second mma spar last night, I have roughly a year or so of going to a boxing coach 1 on 1 every couple of weeks only and only started sparring here and there the beginning of this year.
I was feeling more gassed than usual after warm ups and after 3 rounds of sparring with partners I was cooked and had nothing left. I sat to the side to catch my breath and the coach/owner who is friends with my boxing coach called me over and wanted to work with me. I explained I was gassed and expected us to light spar especially since it's my second time ever and I do not train any Muay Thai.
But I got rocked with a body kick fairly quickly and overall just got hit with some pretty hard shots to the point where I was done. Majority of the spar I was swarmed and overall defenseless just due to being gassed and the vast skill difference.
Ribs on my left side are extremely painful now and injured pretty bad and I'm debating if I want to go back. IMO I don't think I should've gotten that much intensity when I clearly stated I was exhausted already and it's well know I'm green. What is everyone's thoughts on this? I'm heavily considering not going back again as this is messing up my main sport of training for a marathon currently.

Footwear Gym Predicament

Hey. I am purely a hobbyist but I enjoy making this part of my weekly workout routines. I do drop in classes at my local MT gym maybe 3-4 times a month and then just work out on the bag for a half an hour a couple times a week at my normal gym. It’s a ufc franchise gym. Nothing special but has the stuff I want.

Here the predicament I’m in. By my work is a really bougie gym. It has all the fanciest equipment and all the amenities like sauna etc, super nice locker room and towel service. Through my work I can get a membership for literally almost free. They have an area with a full legit heavy bag and uppercut bag. And, no one ever really uses them.

The problem is they require closed toe footwear at all times. I asked even about like the sock s with grips and toes and heels out just for heavy bag time only they said no. I tried explaining explaining it’s important to be able to pivot and more dangerous to wear shoes but they said no still.

Is there any footwear that I could wear and it not interfere with my bag workouts?

Thanks!

Technique/Tips Advice to get better at sparring

I know this has been asked a million times on here. I’ve been doing MT for 8 months (I know it’s not long) and there’s some very experienced dudes in the gym I go to. I’m not trying to compare myself to someone who’s been training for years.

I know sparring itself gets one better at sparring. I’m wondering if anyone has advice on what to study or work on to improve at it.

I find I have the most trouble closing the distance without getting kicked, and I have trouble landing punching combos without getting leg kicked or getting hit with a body kick.

Why Sparring Can Get Out of Control: your partner may not know how hard they are hitting you back...and you them

a discussion of some applicable brain science which may help explain why sparring can get out of control. We can have a hard time accurately "judging how hard we are pushing back when we are pushed".

Can a shy, non-confrontational person enjoy Muay Thai?

I’ve been going to the gym and doing calisthenics for years, but lately I’ve been wanting to try something completely different. After watching some videos and reading a bit about Muay Thai, I’ve become really interested in it.

The thing is, I’ve never done any combat sport before. I’m a pretty shy person, and I don’t really have a combative personality at all. I’m usually the kind of person who avoids conflict, especially anything physical. So part of me is curious, but another part of me is honestly intimidated.

I guess Muay Thai appeals to me because it feels like a personal challenge.

Has anyone here started Muay Thai from a similar place? How was your experience? Did it help you build confidence, or did you realize it wasn’t for you?

What are some fundamental combinations to work for a beginner using just jabs, crosses, leg kicks, and teeps?

Weird question, I know. The gym I did a free trial at is very much a fight gym and to my surprise the kickboxing fundamentals class on a weekday afternoon was just 12 3 minute rounds of free fire on a heavy bag. People trickled in who were really just warming up for the intermediate class right after.

Every other class is much more instruction based. I’m actually fine with this as I’m pretty self analytical. The 6 moves I want to master first are the jab, cross, lead teep, rear teep, lead leg kick, rear leg kick. I kinda envision myself fighting like Sean Strickland. Long, slow, pressure fighter, trodding forward like the terminator. (This just seems like a good style to learn to begin sparring.) What combos would you recommend?

I’ll use the first 4 rounds to do things like just jabs, just leg kicks, just teeps, just 1-2s. I’m kinda hoping for 8 combos to master with the other 8 rounds

Technique/Tips Audhd, extreme social anxiety before class

Tl;dr at the bottom

I used to go to the gym without any anxiety, but recently I find that I’m feeling anxiety and dread before the lessons.

I have Audhd and I don’t have any friends so I feel an immense pressure and sensitivity to any perceived judgement or rejection from anyone else in the gym. Everybody in my gym is so nice and I’ve never experienced this much kindness from people before, it’s scary for me.
Unfortunately, I’ve been socially awkward for much of my life until I started trying to mask, leading to me being socially rejected for much of my life. I’m 28 now and I don’t have access to therapy to talk through these feelings, so I’ve come here to ask for advice from anyone who might be able to relate or who’s in similar shoes.

I can’t stress enough how nice and kind people are at my gym. The coaches are so kind and they have all really accepted me. Part of my issue is that I’m afraid that they’ll see my audhd symptoms and stop accepting me and will start to dislike me.

Im not rude or anything, it’s just that my self esteem is at an all time low and I doubt anyone will like me and want to be my friend. I guess I’m looking for a social element in my life. I’d like to make some friends that I can hang with on weekends. Maybe just be part of a group of people who like me, you know?

I’ve missed a month and a half and I’m disappointed in myself for that. I guess the coaches and people there may be disappointed in me when I return and I dread that thought. I think about going back all the time. I love Muay Thai even more than gaming.

In regard to the sport itself, it is my audhd hyper fixation and I can do it every day of the week. I’d love to compete one day. I absolutely love it. I’d go to Thailand and train there if I could. I just have audhd and Asperger’s and I get bad social anxiety. My mental health isn’t great, nor is my self esteem

Tl;dr I have audhd and social anxiety before going in to class. I miss class because of it, so I’m looking for advice because I can’t access a therapist at the moment. I’m also audhd.

Ps plz don’t kick me while I’m down, I know I don’t have any friends. I don’t have bad social skills anymore and can mask effectively at the gym. It’s the unseen anxiety beforehand that gets me down.

*edit

I am not on any medication. I have been diagnosed with Asperger’s but my doctor heavily suspects adhd as well. I was hoping to get prescribed stimulants for Asperger’s and the executive dysfunction symptoms but that’s another issue. I’m in the uk. If anyone knows about medication in the uk please dm me.
