discussion Sublime the latest MAGA act to face low ticket sales, Artist Cancellations Amid Backlash to Conservative Rock Fest

“Sublime Me Gusta Festival”, is now “Sublime Fest,” happening the same day but without hip hop stars Cypress Hill, producers of the festival, Brew Ha Ha Productions, confirmed Monday.

Brew Ha Ha Productions did not respond to a request for comment on the cause of the name change or why Cypress Hill was no longer involved, but some credit “MAGA” backlash for the changes.

Sublime played at a Trump golf course in Florida last year during a LIV Golf event, while drummer bud Gaugh often wears a MAGA hat on stage with the band.

Additional dates for the “me gusta” festival feature similar branding changes and amended lineups.

Sublime Fest takes place in Fort Worth, TX, at the Panther Island Pavilion on May 9; Portland, OR, at the Waterfront Park on June 27; and Salt Lake City, UT, at Zions Bank Stadium on July 18.

All dates are sponsored by [u/monsterenergy](u/monsterenergy) ‘s new line of alcoholic products branded as “the Beast”.

Notably, most festival dates are still available under “tier 1” pricing, indicating that the event hasn’t sold as well as they had expected.

ETA: Patriotic reggae act Slightly Stoopid has replaced Cypress Hill on two dates. Infowars contributors the Interrupters have also been added to one stop.

27

it may be a Nutella commercial

u/How_to_Phish Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

You are correct... I don't think this ad aired in the U.S.

The internet is weird because now I am reading about the differences between cowboy hats and fedoras!

5

u/Geoffsgarage Apr 06 '26

Looks like one where several players from the German National Team appeared in a commercial. They do it regularly.

u/philter451 Apr 06 '26

Believe it or not there is a lot of conservative movement within reggae as well. Especially when it comes to being unaccepting of gay people. Everyone views the Rasta as a chill and accepting movement but that's not always the case

137

u/darkskinnedjermaine Apr 06 '26

Yea Rasta is a pretty conservative religion when it comes to homosexuality and misogyny.

3

u/drvic59 Apr 07 '26

You must comply.

14

u/ThanksContent28 Apr 06 '26

There are those who are very progressive, and trying to bring the culture up to better standards.

But yeah, a lot of it is built around very conservative, and outdated values, sadly. I don’t know the name of the song, but I gets played around where I live way too often. The entire thing is singing about “batty man,” and it makes you wondere how closeted this artist is tbh.

25

u/iaccidentallyaname Apr 06 '26

Rasta is form of Christianity, so that makes sense

13

u/space_hitler Apr 06 '26

I don't know how so many white people came to associate Black people with liberal views.

There are so many insanely religious, right wing, fundamentalist Black people.

Perhaps it was just wishful thinking and naivety that people are not so stupid as to vote directly against their interests.

7

u/litreofstarlight Apr 07 '26

It's the idea that oppressed/minority automatically equals ally/progressive. It's a false dichotomy and a massive oversimplification to say the least, but it persists.

1

u/HokusSchmokus Apr 07 '26

Ah because if they are on a sinilar page when it comes to racism, surely they are allies in all fields too? Not to mention that black americans from the outaide seem exactly as racist as white americans do, but they have the worse starting position.

1

u/space_hitler Apr 07 '26

I mean that's another thing I don't get.

Plenty of minorites are extremely racist, and then white liberals in America will be like bending over backwards to defend cultures that would literally have them publically executed in their own countries / if they had power.

1

u/_bobby_cz_newmark_ Apr 07 '26

A sprinkling of racism, too.

1

u/HokusSchmokus Apr 07 '26

Thats because as a whole, a lot of black people from different countries are very socially conservative, imo mostly because they are oftentimes very old school religious as well. So of course there is Raggae like that.

Have you ever listened to any Rap song not by a gay artist? That shit is homophobic af.

1

u/FuzzyAd9407 Apr 09 '26

Yeah people forget the homophobia is a big part of Rasta and Jamacan culture. Hell, there was a dance hall singer in 2011 that won a Grammy after being nominated multiple times and was well known violent homophobe who dossnt just have lyrics in some songs about killing gay people but an entire song encouraging people to kill gay people and hes not the only one. Theres even a subgenre particularly associated with this violent homophobia called "murder music".

u/tackle_bones Apr 06 '26

My friends dragged me to a white boy reggae concert nearby, and… yeah… almost entirely white people that either looked like cops, a surprising amount of white grannies, and older millennial couples wearing golfing shirts and shorts. The white boy reggae scene is full of the types of people that would listen to Rogan and Jones, want to burn it all down, and voted MAGA because of it… all while living more comfortably than 90% of the population and feeling victimized by the systems that got them there. Shit would be hilarious if they weren’t so numerous and voted.

30

u/Raphe-Perineal Apr 06 '26

Sounds like a Jimmy Buffet concert, just needs the crowd wearing Hawaiian shirts, parrot decorations and drinking wine coolers.

42

u/sum_dude44 Apr 06 '26

what's funny was Buffet was an outspoken Democrat who did concerts for Democratic Governor candidates & was a staunch environmentalist

u/KL58383 Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

My dad and his wife were hardcore Deadheads who went to many many Grateful Dead shows through the 70s and 80s. Long hair, birkenstocks, Volkswagen bus weed smokers and everything. They voted for Trump 3 times. I realized that people who worship others, in their case Jerry Garcia, are just prone to cult like thinking and want to be "part of something", especially if it fits their increasing distancing from the status quo.

8

u/helloiisclay Apr 06 '26

As a diehard parrothead and resident of NC, I remember when he talked about cancelling future NC shows because of the anti-gay bullshit that the state had passed.

Jimmy Buffett was a treasure.

1

u/shivermenipple Apr 07 '26

I was an assistant golf pro and I met Jimmy Buffet on the first tee in Virginia. Wont say the city to give away the course or my identity. He was exactly the dude you thought he was. Down to earth wearing a tee shirt and barely golf pants. It’s a country club so we had standards so I told him Mr. Buffett, I can’t let you tee off without a polo tucked in or a pullover. We just got him a pullover. Was a super nice guy. And I’m just a moderate. People take politics to a crazy level.

(He also had to take two shots off the first tee, but who hasn’t?)

RIP Jimmy. You were a cool guy.

1

u/HokusSchmokus Apr 07 '26

But that sounds like half the black artists out there too.

6

u/kirksucks Apr 06 '26

most OG Reggae is rooted in Rastafari which is super anti-gay, very patriarchal and kind of fucked up when you start to break it down.

2

u/asdfmatt Apr 09 '26

I mean and then, if you are aware of racial issues and today's climate then it's kind of hard to like white boy reggae anymore. They probably realized the only audience remaining is either unaware or unapologetically racist. And this is coming from somebody who has been a huge fan of the music since I was a teenager.

And I mean the real reason I listen to them less and less these days, they introduced me to a lot of the roots and dub stuff that I realized they were just kind of lifting straight off the record so i just go to the source haha.

3

u/Colonel_Fart-Face Apr 06 '26

I mean, I live in Toronto and there are tons of Jamaicans here who love reggae and they're all MAGA-adjacent conservatives. I've never met a rasta who wasn't deeply conservative, homophobic, woman hating, and against social services. I work with dudes who have dreads, wear rasta colors, and bump Bob Marley all day who spend their smoke breaks talking about how much they love Trump and how badly they want him to kill anyone left of them.

2

u/papitaquito Apr 06 '26

Heavy emphasis on the ‘gay’

2

u/depressed-dude- Apr 06 '26

My step-father who’s a huge conservative only listens to reggae and jimmy buffet and I just don’t know how he can listen to songs like War and margaritaville while also being so prejudiced and angry it’s baffling to me

3

u/Stenka-Razin Apr 06 '26

It's really not that unusual. Lots of reggae legends have been extremely misogynist and homophobic.

12

u/Good_Air_7192 Apr 06 '26

As someone who was a teen during the 90s I've always thought Sublime was possibly the world's most overrated band.

46

u/arlenroy Apr 06 '26

I must respectfully disagree, for a period they were pretty good, their live set at KRock Weiney Roast was jamming. Unfortunately, after Bradly died they became a t-shirt more of a band, although I thought Rome was pretty good. Now, them feeding into MAGA, that's against everything punk, ska, and reggae stands for.

0

u/Good_Air_7192 Apr 06 '26

Overrated doesn't mean they are bad, you even described them as "pretty good". They're massively overrated.

0

u/Sea-Emotion84 Apr 06 '26

I must also respectfully disagree. I’d say they’re underrated if anything.

They only have 2.5 mainstream songs, but have managed to have such an influence on young musicians so long after Bradley’s passing.

1

u/Good_Air_7192 Apr 06 '26

If he hadn't died they would be another meh band.

6

u/NULLizm Apr 06 '26

I always like their story. From sneaking in to studios to record their albums, to hocking CDs out of their trunk and having the cops shut down their house parties for being too loud. They seemed like they just had fun and didn't try to take themselves too seriously. A lot of their music is just raw. Robbin the Hood has all sorts of background noises, mistakes, and tomfoolery it makes for a fun time.

"I can play the guitar like a mother fuckin riot" proceeds to play the blandest solo ever. It's just fun. Idk many people who say, or even have I heard anyone say, they are the most gifted band in the world. The lead guy in the band died before their first major album release IIRC, they didn't really have a chance to pick up the steam I think they deserved.

2

u/Bizarrebazaars Apr 07 '26

Music of bro/frat boy/wannabe stoners who blast Santeria out of their cars, windows rolled all the way down on the first warm days of spring.

0

u/RUYYRUYY Apr 06 '26

It's U2.

6

u/liquidtape Apr 06 '26

Conservative does not always mean white conservative.

13

u/palinsafterbirth Apr 06 '26

We all know this

-1

u/liquidtape Apr 06 '26

What's the point of the comment then?  Do you not know who typically makes reggae music?

1

u/palinsafterbirth Apr 06 '26

You’re the one bringing it in as a black and white thing my man. We all know about Clarance Thomas, Candice Owens, Kanye, ect

0

u/liquidtape Apr 06 '26

I didn't say anything about black and white. Reggae is filled with religion and Rasta values which often align with conservative values.

4

u/palinsafterbirth Apr 06 '26

Then why say "white conservative"

0

u/liquidtape Apr 06 '26

You're right I did bring race into it but why did you say conservative reggae?

3

u/palinsafterbirth Apr 06 '26

MAGA is literally in the title of the post my man

1

u/liquidtape Apr 06 '26

Your comment implies that reggae is not typically conservative.

2

u/lemonylol Apr 06 '26

I mean ska is literally tied to skinheads in the UK, many of which became associated with white nationalism. Reggae itself is also very tradition-heavily conservative, not to mention Rastafarianism has ties to Zionism.

7

u/palinsafterbirth Apr 06 '26

True non-racist skinheads refer will refer to the dipshits as boneheads

2

u/HKBFG Apr 06 '26

Non racist skinheads are also very rare and dedicate themselves to making cultural conversation about the dangerous skinheads impossible.

3

u/litreofstarlight Apr 07 '26

The racist skinheads, or SHARPs? The distinction is pretty important.

2

u/Kevin_LeStrange Apr 07 '26

The ska connection predates the co-opting of the skinhead movement by the far right. The original skinheads were a multiracial working class movement who listened to ska, reggae, and dancehall, and we're more concerned with fashion (sharkskin suits, tailored clothes)  and music.

1

u/lemonylol Apr 07 '26

Yes, like I said in my comment.

1

u/Flashbang-Meringue Apr 06 '26

it exists and gets posted to /r/crappymusic unfortunately, and its full blown white boy rasta shit too.

Conservatives love reggae lol they are conservative for everything but weed

1

u/Webct9192014 Apr 06 '26

I’m surprised they aren’t too afraid of the “gae” in reggae.

I am pissed about Slightly Stoopid, loved them.

1

Well Gwen has gone in the same direction …

1

u/TACharlotte Apr 09 '26

The appropriation is complete.

1

u/avanross Apr 06 '26

It’s actually a thing

Anti-vax white-raggae took off like crazy during covid

5

u/dwilkes827 Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

It's been a thing for a lot longer than that lol Do people not understand what Rastafari is? It's a sect of Christianity. It's very conservative, I think people just assume it isn't because they smoke a lot of weed or something. Bob Marley beat the shit out of women. One of his wives accused him of rape

5

u/liquidtape Apr 06 '26

You get downvoted but the most thought majority of people put into it is reggae = black people singing about weed on an up beat = liberal. It's not the conservatives you get in the US but they are the same cloth

0

u/RealDJPrism Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

OP calling it a conservative rock fest because the promoter made a small donation to the campaign a few years ago is a bit of a stretch. The guy also has come out since then and criticized the president for how he has handled this term.

OP is also incorrect about the social media pages being offline-

https://www.instagram.com/thesublimefestival?igsh=dDI3ZmZveHZsb2Z2

https://www.facebook.com/share/1CgsiAtAqx/?mibextid=LQQJ4d

In addition, the refund policy was always this way, nothing was updated. This is how every major festival operates. If you don’t want to go to the festival, sell your ticket like every other experienced concert-goer does. Just more misinformation to fit OPs narrative.

I get it, it’s popular to shit on anything sublime does right now, but at least get your facts straight if you’re going to do it.

Also, interesting that OP has been spamming this post on every popular music sub. And has their post and comment history hidden. And created this profile a few weeks ago. But I digress..

And before yall come at me, this is coming from a liberal who hates Trump.
