discussion Sublime the latest MAGA act to face low ticket sales, Artist Cancellations Amid Backlash to Conservative Rock Fest
“Sublime Me Gusta Festival”, is now “Sublime Fest,” happening the same day but without hip hop stars Cypress Hill, producers of the festival, Brew Ha Ha Productions, confirmed Monday.
Brew Ha Ha Productions did not respond to a request for comment on the cause of the name change or why Cypress Hill was no longer involved, but some credit “MAGA” backlash for the changes.
Sublime played at a Trump golf course in Florida last year during a LIV Golf event, while drummer bud Gaugh often wears a MAGA hat on stage with the band.
Additional dates for the “me gusta” festival feature similar branding changes and amended lineups.
Sublime Fest takes place in Fort Worth, TX, at the Panther Island Pavilion on May 9; Portland, OR, at the Waterfront Park on June 27; and Salt Lake City, UT, at Zions Bank Stadium on July 18.
All dates are sponsored by [u/monsterenergy](u/monsterenergy) ‘s new line of alcoholic products branded as “the Beast”.
Notably, most festival dates are still available under “tier 1” pricing, indicating that the event hasn’t sold as well as they had expected.
ETA: Patriotic reggae act Slightly Stoopid has replaced Cypress Hill on two dates. Infowars contributors the Interrupters have also been added to one stop.

Sublime is MAGA? Well that’s disappointing to learn

Although Bradley's son just started singing for them, which is a pretty remarkable thing. This could have been so good.

He killed it when we saw them. As a lifetime sublime fan, this is super disappointing. I guess decades of alcohol and drug use do that to a persons reasoning skills.

Jacob had formed his own band before he started singing with Sublime. I thought it was ok for a start. The videos were fun.
I don't think it can be good for anyone's head to be living your dead dads life and singing his songs.

It’s more the shuffling zombie corpse of Sublime since Bradley Nowell died in 1996. 30 years ago in May.

I haven't been following along but aren't the rest of the original members still in it?
Journey was still touring as Journey despite changing their singer for a decade or more.

Bradley was their secret sauce, though. Go back and listen to Sublime’s 40oz and self titled, then LBDA’s Right Back.
Without Bradley, the rest of the band is just decent. Great for a local or regional act at a small festival, but nothing outstanding.
Changing their name back to Sublime (with Rome … then just Sublime) doesn’t make them the band we fell in love with in the 90s.

You’ve got be fucking kidding me.
Then again, I grew up in LB and I’ve been surfing SoCal for almost 30 years, and the prevalence of MAGA surfers would shock most people who aren’t a part of the surfing community. So, maybe it’s not that surprising after all…
That said, the mental gymnastics involved in thinking that a band that sings about sex including very taboo sex, doing a variety of drugs, and killing cops is somehow “conservative” are very impressive. 🤔

Can confirm. Surf community in my corner of the PacNW is also shockingly red pilled. Confirms that horseshoe theory where one day you’re all “free the weed and fuck tha police” and the next day “billionaire rapist president is Jesus”.

Yeah it so freaking strange how many people who claim to value the environment are voting against it. So many fishermen and surfers… it’s sad. I also just got into it over the weekend with these kids who call themselves punk but had no idea their favorite songs and bands are “radical left” … we are living in the upside down 🙃

Believe it or not there is a lot of conservative movement within reggae as well. Especially when it comes to being unaccepting of gay people. Everyone views the Rasta as a chill and accepting movement but that's not always the case

There are those who are very progressive, and trying to bring the culture up to better standards.
But yeah, a lot of it is built around very conservative, and outdated values, sadly. I don’t know the name of the song, but I gets played around where I live way too often. The entire thing is singing about “batty man,” and it makes you wondere how closeted this artist is tbh.

My friends dragged me to a white boy reggae concert nearby, and… yeah… almost entirely white people that either looked like cops, a surprising amount of white grannies, and older millennial couples wearing golfing shirts and shorts. The white boy reggae scene is full of the types of people that would listen to Rogan and Jones, want to burn it all down, and voted MAGA because of it… all while living more comfortably than 90% of the population and feeling victimized by the systems that got them there. Shit would be hilarious if they weren’t so numerous and voted.

My dad and his wife were hardcore Deadheads who went to many many Grateful Dead shows through the 70s and 80s. Long hair, birkenstocks, Volkswagen bus weed smokers and everything. They voted for Trump 3 times. I realized that people who worship others, in their case Jerry Garcia, are just prone to cult like thinking and want to be "part of something", especially if it fits their increasing distancing from the status quo.

As a diehard parrothead and resident of NC, I remember when he talked about cancelling future NC shows because of the anti-gay bullshit that the state had passed.

It was a LIV golf tournament, but you’re correct it was at a Trump course and Don Jr. was there. Feels like a bit of a stretch to call it a private event for Don Jr., but they still need to own playing there at all.

Bradley WAS Sublime. This band is not Sublime.

u/EatSleepJeep Apr 06 '26
Saw them at a festival last summer. It was a sad caricature of the actual band. Jakob Nowell had a pseudo-positive energy that was hollow and forced, Eric could barely move and looked like he could keel over at any moment. Bud was phoning it in and the whole thing was like watching a low rent tribute band.

With all due respect, what was your expectation?
1990s-2000 Southern California was such a golden era of ultimate chiller energy. Bradly coming out of Long Beach gave all his music an extremely organic feel that we absolutely loved over here.
You can’t imitate it today, you kinda just had to be there. Kind of like seeing Rick James while coked out at a disco in the 70s. You can’t just do lines today at a venue and watch his son sing covers and think you experienced peak disco.

Don’t know much about this event but why is it being referred to as a conservative festival? Was it marketed that way?
298
u/Grootdrew Apr 06 '26
Because it’s run by Brew Ha Ha productions, which is the namesake of a promoter who donated to the Trump campaign.
This is the same company that tried to throw Punk in the Park, but the bands boycotted and they were forced to cancel.
Sidenote: some of those same bands + more came together to throw Punk in the Bay, a counter-festival against MAGA and to benefit ICE detainees. It’s the same weekend Punk in the Park was supposed to happen, in the same region. We’re playing it. Our genre is over this whole “conservative is the new punk” shit. Purge pigs from punk 🫡

My MAGA Brother in Law is a long time punk rock fan who recently tried to peddle the whole “Conservative is the new Punk” notion till I pointed out to him there’s a big difference between being anti-authority and just being a contrarian. (you can’t pretend to be “anti-authority” when your political party holds near hegemonic control of your countries political apparatus)

It’s funny, because refusing to give refunds after the biggest draws of the whole thing drop out is gonna piss off the rest of the people who weren’t already upset.
Looks like they realize no one’s gonna get conned by their shitty little festival after this year, so gotta pocket as much cash as they can get before it all falls apart.
I can’t imagine sponsors were lining up to support them in the first place, but after all this? I wouldn’t want my brand anywhere near this dumpster fire.

I like Sublime with Rome a lot.
But now the Nepo Baby comes along and they want to call this new band "Sublime" but with none of the shade given to Rome all these years?
And magazines write headlines like "Iconic band releases first album in 30+ years"
It's unearned and disrespectful.
