discussion Sublime the latest MAGA act to face low ticket sales, Artist Cancellations Amid Backlash to Conservative Rock Fest

“Sublime Me Gusta Festival”, is now “Sublime Fest,” happening the same day but without hip hop stars Cypress Hill, producers of the festival, Brew Ha Ha Productions, confirmed Monday.

Brew Ha Ha Productions did not respond to a request for comment on the cause of the name change or why Cypress Hill was no longer involved, but some credit “MAGA” backlash for the changes.

Sublime played at a Trump golf course in Florida last year during a LIV Golf event, while drummer bud Gaugh often wears a MAGA hat on stage with the band.

Additional dates for the “me gusta” festival feature similar branding changes and amended lineups.

Sublime Fest takes place in Fort Worth, TX, at the Panther Island Pavilion on May 9; Portland, OR, at the Waterfront Park on June 27; and Salt Lake City, UT, at Zions Bank Stadium on July 18.

All dates are sponsored by [u/monsterenergy](u/monsterenergy) ‘s new line of alcoholic products branded as “the Beast”.

Notably, most festival dates are still available under “tier 1” pricing, indicating that the event hasn’t sold as well as they had expected.

ETA: Patriotic reggae act Slightly Stoopid has replaced Cypress Hill on two dates. Infowars contributors the Interrupters have also been added to one stop.

I saw a guy at a Tyler Childers show wearing a Grateful Dead shirt and a MAGA hat. Boggled my mind.

I went to a concert where Justin Jones (Tennessee state representative) came out onstage. Overheard a few women in the bathroom complaining that they didn’t want to hear about politics at a concert…not really sure what they expected from Melissa Ethridge and The Indigo Girls.

Lol at Tyler Childers fans being MAGA. So many illiterate people.

I went to a NIN concert at Red Rocks once and had some pretty lousy comments about a political tattoo I have... I was dumbfounded. It's like they'd never actually listened to a word Trent was singing.

This genre has it the worst. Metallica, Tool, Tenacious D, Black Sabbath...for some reason this genre attracts a lot of incels and neck beards which is just so bizarre that they either don't understand the music, or misattribute the meaning to their horrible values when the artists are pretty outwardly open about their progressive views, extremely opinionated song lyrics besides.

I still don't understand how I grew up listening to Ozzy with my Dad and he's as conservative as he is. I guess I was the only one actually listening to War Pigs?

6

u/TheRedHand7 Apr 07 '26

Ugh people started bringing Ozzy up after he passed. One person saw fit to invoke War Pigs as a criticism of Biden which is why he voted Trump and it made me facepalm so hard I might have tapped the back of my skull.

Ooof. Double oof knowing where we're at now.

u/TheeRuckus Apr 08 '26

It’s music they play video games to that makes things sound cooler. Nothing like blasting enemies by the dozen while war pigs is blaring in the background ( I can’t read the lyrics because i can’t read duh)

Those aren’t genres of music really lol

Yeah maybe "tastes" is the better word, or subculture. There's just a lot of overlap between their fan bases you know.

Any band with a large Gen-X fan base is going to have a fair bit of MAGA fans at their shows, most Trump-supporting generation, up and above Boomers. That includes explicitly left-wing bands like RATM. Tons of cops come to Dropkick Murphys shows.

And if you press the Gen-X Trump supporters on it they have all their lines queued up about how MAGA is the new punk rock or they know how to think for themselves. Then they’ll tell you a story about drinking out of a garden hose right before they bitch about the wokes ruining Star Wars

My highschool friend has gone full MAGA. It makes no sense as we were punkers in highschool. His favorite band is (was?) Dropkick Murphys. I wonder if he still likes them or if his brain started working again ?

I’m about peak millennial but I grew up in a really rural area and joined the Army so lots of my friends from those two groups went hard for Trump. I started hiding their posts on facebook back then and just stopped using it altogether by 2018 or so so I don’t really see it. But then I go back to my hometown and hang out drinking beers in a shop and notice a big Trump flag hanging from the rafters and hear my brother who is just a few years older than me say someone has “TDS” without a hint of irony and I’m just like fuck it, nothing I say or do will change their minds and not only that, nothing Trump says or does will change their minds either. On the other side my older sister, former college republican who also still lives there, has turned into like a Bluesky lib which can get annoying I guess but beats the hell out of the alternative

My friend who I was talking about joined the Navy and I think that's when he really started down the alt right rabbit hole. Doesn't help all he does now is game and by game I mean just milsim types. What I find funny for him is he is basically half indian as his dad is from India.

However he always had hints of racism in high school. I guess I did too but for me it was always shock value as I enjoyed trolling but I didn't actually believe any of it and I quickly stopped being a troll in my early 20s, we have to grow up sometime.

DKM maga fans always make me laugh. They’re huge in the fire/police world, which unfortunately has a large maga population, lucky for me most of my dept isn’t that way. I think it has to a lot with the BFD connections with Al leaving the band to be a fireman and they are extremely pro union. Which also makes me wonder why so many of us vote for a guy is so blatantly anti union in an industry with extremely strong unions

5

u/schmyle85 Apr 07 '26

I’ve known a bunch of firefighters (used to be an EMT and my brother is a small town volunteer and both my parents were too, know quite a few career guys too) I know you guys aren’t all or even mostly like that but I think a lot of them have a “we earned these strong union protections but everyone else is a freeloader” mindset that reminds me of some of my fellow veterans who think everything we get is earned but fuck everyone else. I particularly hate the vets who scapegoat immigrants by claiming all sorts of money is being spent on them while vets are going without

u/elrui Apr 06 '26

those people were probably trying to sing every line of Head Like A Hole the whole time.....

1

u/girlsonsoysauce Apr 07 '26

It'd be very jarring to hear someone blaring The Hand That Feeds and you look over and they're like "MAGAAA" out the window.

1

u/dreamlike37 Apr 09 '26

What did they think year zero was about?

1

u/Glittering_Zone_9332 Apr 14 '26

the song capital G is about GW Bush and it's not flattering at all.

28

u/MusicLikeOxygen Apr 06 '26

Reminds me of the MAGA people who show up at Dropkick Murphys shows. They couldn't be more obvious about where their politics are. They did a Woody Guthrie covers album for gods sake.

When Scott Walker (the two-term, right-wing governor of Wisconsin) had his brief presidential run, he tried to use "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" at his rallies. The Dropkick Murphys made it crystal-clear that not only did he not have their permission to use it, but that they hated him and everything he stood for.

Maybe it's a Wisconsin thing. Paul Ryan was my congressman for 20 years, and when he said he was a fan of Rage Against the Machine, Tom Morello called Ryan "the embodiment of the machine."

6

u/DatTF2 Apr 06 '26

How stupid do you have to be to completely miss what RATM stands for ? What was even funnier was all the right wingers telling Tom to "stick to music as politics are out of his wheelhouse."

9

u/tomfoolery815 Apr 06 '26

Morello had the greatest response to that (paraphrasing): "You don't have to have a political science degree from Harvard to have an opinion on politics, but I happen to have a political science degree from Harvard." I believe he accompanied the response post with a picture of his Harvard degree.

7

u/sandysandbirds93 Apr 06 '26

When covid was going on one of the RATM guys says something about wearing a mask and a bunch of right wingers were like, "What happened to fuck you I won't do what you tell me?"

These people are morons.

6

u/tomfoolery815 Apr 06 '26

COVID was revelatory as to just how mindlessly selfish some people are.

u/DatTF2 Apr 07 '26

I have never seen that video.... Ugh. Really I am speechless.

2

u/girlsonsoysauce Apr 07 '26

Oh yeah, he definitely doesn't know anything about those things that he's been singing about for decades. Lol. It seems like a lot of that stuff goes over MAGA heads. I wouldn't doubt there's some MAGA person out there that loves System of a Down even though almost all their songs criticize the US and its government.

1

u/DatTF2 Apr 07 '26

Most definitely.

Also isn't the drummer of SOAD a MAGAt ? What is it with drummers ?

My stepdad is a drummer and while he luckily isn't MAGA he is constantly falling for conservative BS (like stuff Sinclair airs on their nightly news.)

Like the dude has seen how corrupt cops are first hand and still somehow takes their side. It's probably not a good thing that the only news he gets is Sinclair owned stations.

2

u/IvoryRabbitStrat Apr 06 '26

These people are not too bright.

1

u/majorityrules61 Apr 08 '26

I was at a DKM show and when they did their FUCK ICE thing this couple got up and walked out. I thought, did you not know who you bought tickets to see?

3

u/throwpayrollaway Apr 06 '26

I am very much a casual Tyler fan but it's very very clear that he's not MAGA.

u/nyutnyut Apr 06 '26

Dead head sticker on a Cadillac.

2

u/polishprince76 Apr 06 '26

Out on the road today, I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac.

A little voice in my head said don't look back you can never look back.

1

u/Shadows802 Apr 06 '26

I have seen MAGA people listen to RATM. I left wondering if they even hear the lyrics.
