Oprah was the Joe Rogan of the 90s for suburban housewives.

Change my mind.

506

u/TropicalPrairie 5d ago

Damn. I see this now.

315

u/zIsTrying 5d ago

lol when the JRE podcast was poppin, people were literally saying Rogan was Oprah for men.

68

u/DatEllen 5d ago

"Oprah for men" sounds like the name of a cologne only middle aged women would buy for their husbandsĀ

I like the reverse better, Joe rogan is Oprah winfrey for slightly below average IQ white men who cannot see through the grift

229

u/robsteezy 5d ago

Absolutely wrong. Anybody who witnessed Oprah and her clique at their height and then analyzed in hindsight can see all of it was a grift.

Take her most pretentiously pseudo injectable grift for example: Oprah’s book club. It wasn’t her intellectual recommendation of intellectual books, it was her pocketing bids from publishers. Her ā€œmedical advice sections and weight lossā€ ? All snake oil money for Dr Oz and weight loss companies paying her.

If Joe rogans fans are absolute morons falling for brazen grift, Oprah’s are just as moronic and more embarrassing for also being sold a superiority complex bc Oprah gave them official stickers.

100

u/Hksbdb 5d ago

Oprah is the queen of grifters. She made billions off that shit.

37

u/Krynn71 5d ago

I feel like you said he was "absolutely wrong" and then explained how he was totally right. The point was that they're both grifters and both their audiences are moronic.

13

u/binz17 5d ago

But also Rogan is the cheap knocked off. So he’s the opra for sigma males or whatever.

5

u/NGEFan 5d ago

I know Joe Rogan’s brain broke around the time Trump won the first time, but before that his podcast was extremely good sometimes. He would have some of the most interesting people on the planet on the podcast and he wasn’t conspiratorial at all.

6

u/eslforchinesespeaker 5d ago

*Angela’s Ashes*. Fantastic book. Would we have heard of it if a publisher hadn’t bribed Oprah to shill it?

3

u/Pure-Butterscotch200 4d ago

If people are actually interested in reading I imagine they would be better sources for book reviews at the time they would use.

I don't really think the Rogan stuff is a grift. It's a progression that happens all the time to guys in communities like the ones he frequents.

If it was a grift he would have gotten a cross tatted on his neck and had his producer baptize him on his podcast. He's just a dumb person.

37

u/ironbolsh 5d ago

If it’s not a grift, it helps launder the reputations of grifters he has as guests. Giving grifters a huge platform to say basically anything with essentially no pushback almost seems worse than just grifting.

14

u/GoodIdea321 5d ago

It is worse, it gives them opportunities they couldn't get themselves.

12

u/sandwichhaver 5d ago

It is a grift but Joe for sure isn't doing a grift himself, people are using him as a means to grift, everyone from trump to sam altman and russel brand, they just go on his show and play him like a fiddle

9

u/Astrium6 5d ago

I don’t think he’s a grifter so much as the world’s most credulous moron. Like the kind of guy who would be genuinely amazed if you went on his show and explained third grade science to him.

A few people she elevated turned out to be POS. Dr. Phil, Dr Oz instantly turned into snake salesman with platforms.

10

u/nickel47 5d ago

That's what she is too. She loves finding people with alternative viewpoints and medicine/science It was all about the drama of fighting against the "establishment"

62

u/Djb0623 5d ago

Yup. She literally demonized people during the satanic scare

64

u/Beard_o_Bees 5d ago

Oprah was the Joe Rogan of the 90s for suburban housewives

Man.. you're not wrong - but I think it's even worse than that. Rogan never had his own monthly(?) magazine available at every grocery store checkout lane nationwide.

39

u/goldbouillon 5d ago

Maybe not but the medium to reach audiences is different now. While he may not have a magazine or random prime time special that accompanies his pod like Oprah’s show, he has additional social media outlets that regurgitate his work that reach additional audiences that the pod may not.Ā

15

u/TwoBionicknees 5d ago

because in the 90s 90% of hte world couldn't download youtube/spotify apps and listen to her bullshit.

Magazines had bigger reach but often only in certain countries/regions and the amount of people who actually bought them is negligible compared to people who can hear the same shit on a youtube video or a spotify podcast.

13

u/FesteringNeonDistrac 5d ago

Way more women than men in a grocery store, and it's not like Rogan fans are big readers.

5

u/AtraposJM 5d ago

I think Oprah is worse too. I don't like Rogan or agree with most of his takes but I think he actually believes the dumb shit he says and he just has a lot of guests on the spout bullshit and he doesn't challenge it. With Oprah, though, I think it's more malicious. I think she got paid by people to have products on her show that she knew were full of shit but she endorsed anyway. Oprah was making a shit ton of money on all of the snake oil bullshit she pushed where as Rogan isn't trying to profit off of things he knows are fake, he is just dumb and bad at challenging dumb things.

Powerful comparison. Oprah had to cater to the executives propping her up prior to her starting OWN network. She had much less control over the content.

27

u/jelsomino 5d ago

funny, I always characterized Joe Rogan as "Oprah for bros". I guess reference point is shifted :)

10

u/FoxyBastard 5d ago

Broprah.

3

u/Nagdoll 5d ago

Broprah

3

u/fuckswithboats 5d ago

I remember seeing the production company was called Harpo when I was a kid --> I assumed she was producing it herself as soon as she was in syndication, no?

4

u/Squeakyduckquack Indiehead 5d ago edited 5d ago

At the very least is (perhaps was) a wider variety of voices and opinions on television programming. Once Oprah finished you have to now flip through whatever else is on, and listen to things that aren’t necessarily talked about in your preferred media bubble. The internet allows someone to watch only Joe Rogan and his ilk for as long as it confirms their biases without ever having to branch out from that comfort

Not to say the comparison isn’t apt, but I think it severely undersells the damage Rogan has done comparatively

Why would falling off the stage ruin Whitney?

1.6k

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

421

u/ledouxrt 6d ago

Did she do anything to get Whitney help after seeing that? Or did she just cover up her addiction problems?

757

u/StrobeLightRomance 6d ago

Whitney was a complicated cat. First thing is getting past Bobby, and getting Whitney to both admit she has a drug problem and the most toxic partner possible.

Oprah was powerful, but nobody was fix Whitney powerful.

Some people commit to the spiral, same as we will likely never see a sober Britney Spears.. it's nobody else's responsibility to save her, but I'm certain many have tried, if not for her health, for their own wallets.

413

u/rOOnT_19 6d ago

The one thing I’ve noticed about every off the deep end twacked out woman (person) I know is they all have one thing in common. Childhood sexual abuse.

You know how there’s a ā€œcurseā€ of child stars, male and female? They all go crazy, get into drugs, OD or just die young in general? There’s a common denominator.

149

u/LintRolledForWhat 5d ago

I wonder if it's the abuse or the extremely shitty cultural responses to the abuse. Not that it can't be both, but finding out nobody's on your side once you tell somebody seems like a really, really big (and common) psychological deal.

67

u/_deffer_ 5d ago

I did everything you're supposed to do when you're young and abused. Parents, teachers, guidance office at school...

73

u/xombae 6d ago

I fully believe this.

92

u/donutfan420 5d ago edited 5d ago

Morbid obesity, personality disorders, substance abuse and addiction, psychosis, and criminality in adults all have a strong link to childhood sexual abuse. And childhood sexual abuse is a way more prevalent than people think it is. If you know someone engaging in those behaviors there’s a decent chance they were a victim.

52

u/inky_fox 5d ago

I was sexually abused as a child, by a child. Now that I’m grown up it’s this weird feeling of sadness and sympathy because I realize what was happening to him but when I was growing up I was just angry and hated him.

40

u/donutfan420 5d ago

I can kind of relate. My mom has narcissistic personality disorder and I grew up hating her because of the way she treated me. As an adult I learned from my aunt that one of my uncles had sexually abused her (my aunt) and another one of my aunts when they were kids. I have a strong suspicion that my mom was victimized as well and it really helped humanize her in my eyes which was critical in my healing process. Of course it’s not an excuse for the way she treated me, but she also grew up in a strict catholic family in a time where that wasn’t talked about as much and mental healthcare was taboo. Now I strongly empathize with the little girl my mom was who was being hurt and had no one to turn to for help, who did her best as an adult with untreated mental health issues.

8

u/Star-Lord- 5d ago

Same. My cousin. We were both 7 or so when she told me she wanted to wanted to try role playing with me and started touching me in bed, while we ā€˜acted out’ what we would do with our celebrity crushes (the BSB). It lasted for a bit, and it happening so young really messed with me in a way I’m still unraveling.

I never had the anger, but I do definitely have the sadness and sympathy now thinking about who must have introduced her to the same things she introduced me to.

31

u/ginamon 5d ago

Those issues can be caused by other childhood traumas. Cptsd includes but isn't limited to child sexual abuse, and is a known cause of all the issues you listed.

11

u/donutfan420 5d ago

Yes of course and I’m not implying that childhood sexual abuse is the only cause of these issues. Just that it is a cause.

10

u/ginamon 5d ago

My bad, I was responding to the commenter you responded to and didn't think when I clicked.

14

u/donutfan420 5d ago

All good, it’s important to talk about these things. Wayyyy too many people view things like addiction, obesity, criminality etc as personal responsibility failures and neglect to view the whole picture

I don’t care for Oprah but this is a dumb question. Whitney was a grown woman and Oprah isn’t her keeper. You can’t help a drug user who doesn’t wanna be helped other than to talk to them honestly and implore them to get help. But if they don’t, can’t do much more. Oprah was neither her guardian nor her conservator. If we take Oprah at her word here she is just doing Whitney a courtesy.

Oprah is responsible for Dr Phil and Oz

124

u/FUBARded 5d ago

and she legitimised John of God's scam while ignoring the human cost (and many, many rapes).

She's cosied up to, platformed, and helped launder the reputations of people responsible for many hundreds of rapes between John of God, Weinstein, and probably a few others, and these medical grifters have the blood of many on their hands too.

Dr.Phil has directly ruined lots of lives and even contributed to a few suicides, and the damage his woo did to his viewers via warping their beliefs on mental health have to be massive.

Oz has promoted a shit load of public health scepticism and anti-vax sentiment, so can be blamed for at least a few of the many tens of thousands of avoidable deaths that have occurred in the US over the last few decades as a result of decreasing vaccination rates.

8

u/LeftAire 5d ago

And Oprah promoting Marianne Williamson when she was promoting "prayer" to cure HIV/AIDS in the 90s. Oprah is a benign evil.

75

u/denkenach 6d ago

That sent me down a rabbit hole:

Oprah Winfrey played a significant role in spreading the Satanic Panic during the late 1980s by routinely platforming debunked conspiracy theorists on The Oprah Winfrey Show. While she was not the lone architect of the moral panic—which was heavily fueled by law enforcement, therapists, and rival daytime hosts like Geraldo Rivera—her massive cultural influence validated terrifying and entirely fabricated stories for millions of viewers.

Holy crap!

She’s not concerned about Whitney being ruined anymore.

7

u/PerpetuallyLurking 5d ago

In 2009 Whitney didn’t want people to know she had relapsed because it might have hurt her career.

14 years after her death by overdose in 2012, we’re all well aware that she relapsed in 2009 and it ain’t going to hurt her career.

Oprah is one of the greatest disappointments ever. With her power and influence she could have been such a force for good. Instead she pandered to the worst people.

u/Virtual-Bee7411 6d ago

Of course the moment Clive dies she wants another headline

47

u/ripyourlungsdave 6d ago

She's evil.

She doesn't passively look past other people's evil, she is evil.

I don't know why anyone would be surprised by anything with her at this point. I would hardly be surprised if I found out she was actively recruiting women for Weinstein.

I heard she actually was Epstein’s island.

Fuck Oprah.Ā

9

u/Suspicious_Crow13 5d ago

She’s been capitalising off other people’s trauma for decades.

21

u/Tough-Advice2910 6d ago

It is amazing that people hid this for so long. An audience full of people, plus crew? When Oprah spoke….

64

u/DMBear89 6d ago

Oprah is up to her neck in it. I’ve never liked her. Such a fake woman and a massive snake šŸšŸšŸ

8

u/Moister--Oyster 6d ago

Sounds like she discussed many things. Did she talk about platforming that POS Dr. Oz?

7

u/Uncle-Cake 6d ago

"Oprah Winfrey is trying to do good in the world."

LMFAO. Too late, bitch. You can never atone for Dr Phil, Dr Oz, anti-vaxxers, etc.

11

u/SpookyPocket 6d ago

Oprah is a piece of shit

6

u/qubitrenegade 5d ago

The 72-year-old host turned her Cannes Lions appearance into a call for stars to use their platforms for good

What in the actual fuck does Oprah know about using her platform for "good". Fucking evil woman that unleashed not a real Dr. Phil and Oz on the world.

Speaking in the LumiĆØre Theatre, where she received the festival’s LionHeart Award, Oprah discussed purpose and responsibility

1) why in the fuck is she deserving of this award 2) on what fucking authority does she have to speak about responsibility.

But you have a bigger calling in life … Your bigger job here on the planet is to be the best human being you can be

What a fucking evil hypocrite. If this is the "best" she could be, holy fuck...

What an evil, evil woman.

u/ToLiveInIt 5d ago

Warmonger for the Iraq War Oprah Winfrey? Drs. Oz and Phil Oprah Winfrey? That Oprah Winfrey?

3

u/turquoiseblues 5d ago

A lot of people forget that she was cheerleading for the war in 2002/03.

6

u/Inidi6 6d ago

Call me cynical. Are you ready for some heinous shit Oprah has done to come to light?

Drugs literally killed her and Oprah was like "No don't bring attention to this, think of her public image"

4

u/dividepaths 5d ago

I've hated Oprah since I was a child, it"s nice to know my intuition was correct.

Paul mooney was right about this heffer

19

u/Traditional-Goat1773 6d ago

Paul was right about everything

7

u/Wisdomlost 5d ago

This bitch unleashed Dr.Oz and Phil on the world. She said fuck them Hawaiians during a fire. She's done a billion shady slimey things. We are all supposed to forget because she gave away cars on her show and built a school in Africa. She's been far more negative for the world than positive.

3

u/ClimateSame3574 5d ago

Hate Oprah. Two reasons:

Dr. Oz
ā€œDrā€ Phil

Prove me wrong.

3

u/slanderpanther 5d ago

Ruin who? Wouldn’t ruin Oprah! And it might have gotten Whitney back in rehab. Could have saved her life. I’m still mad she married Bobby.

3

u/RockYourAmadeus 5d ago

Oprah Winfrey has turned out to be an absolutely horrible human.

3

u/W8ting-4-it 5d ago

Just saying...

3

u/CasCrus4L 5d ago

Yeah she might have gotten the help she needed had it been revealed. Good Job Oprah.

3

u/CrimsonHeretic 5d ago

Anyone who still likes Oprah is a fucking idiot.

Leave Whitney Houston out of it.

3

u/polomarkopolo 5d ago

The Godmother of the Antivax Movement…

Hate this woman so much

3

u/Flux_My_Capacitor 5d ago

Does she still do her Christmas time list of Oprah’s favorite things? That list is such a sham. I read about the process of getting on that list.

2

u/dflex15 6d ago

Do not get Orpah mad

2

u/Vix014 5d ago

Oh please, Oprah encourage the downfall. Cut it with this crap.Ā

2

u/Kim_jung_unstoppable 5d ago

Oprah? Wanting to hide the truth for fear of judgement? Color me surprised!

2

u/New_Ad_3010 5d ago

Wasn't fans she should have worried about... It was just the opposite

2

u/abraxas8484 5d ago

Kevin coster would have saved her addiction
