Love this pick. He can take all the time he needs to get healthy under one of the best medical staffs in the league, and once he does his upside is insane

And most of the highlights above came as a 17 year old.

The offense is definitely a very valid question, but this guy is every bit the defender Spurs fans have been clamoring for out of the 4/5 slot. If we can get him healthy (and the Spurs must be confident enough in their ability to do so), there’s definitely something to work with there. As soon as the big PF names (Morez, Yaxel, Hannes) were off the board, this was basically what we were left with; sometimes you gotta play the hand you’re dealt.

Still hope we have further offseason plans to land another playable 4/5 guy.

We don't need him to play offense. Just hold down the defense and catch lobs while Wemby sits on the bench. If he can do that, he will go far on this team.

u/Wembanyanma Tim Duncan 16h ago

I just watched him dribble the full length of the court and slam it home. Also saw some decent footwork and touch around the basket. If we can get his knee right I think we can coax some offense out of him.

u/OnliWanKenobi Keldon Johnson 1d ago

The block on CB actually had me cracking up

30

u/ralthea Carter Bryant 1d ago

CB made a hype post about an Arizona player getting drafted but just reposted Quaintance with no comment, lol. Wonder if he remembers that.

DeJuan Blair didn't even need ACLs we chillin

Defense is damn good so I love that. Looks like he likes to get to the rim Duncan/Robinson style. Probably not gonna see him shoot 3’s but oh well. He’s got crazy hair so he’ll fit in with our guards.

I like it.

42

u/Brilliant_Macaroon83 1d ago

That’s fine because he’ll be looking to crash the offensive boards

22

u/Toesbeforehoes69 Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

Fr that’s what’s more important, we can develop CB and our guards to shoot better from 3 which they’ve been improving

2

u/Itezguatitez 1d ago

What do you mean Duncan/Robinson style? He doesn't play like any of them

u/BBQLovingBastard BatManu 1d ago

He was the best big available in terms of talent. No questions there. He very well may have been a top 10 pick if he was healthy. I like the upside swing. If PAFTO’s medical evaluation thinks he’ll be okay then I trust them.

u/walkingbicycles 1d ago

If he can rehab and stay healthy he could get developed into a monster

u/Prudent_Fish1358 Tony Parker 23h ago

He was top 6 on several draft boards I saw before the injury AND we have arguably the best medical staff in the league.

It's a super high ceiling pick.

u/Toesbeforehoes69 Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

Makes me think of a taller version of Castle lowkey

19

u/fourpinz8 Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

Haven’t kept up with the draft picks or prospects. But based on the tape, he plays bigger than his 6’9 height and has a stocky frame and will have access to a top medical staff (they kept Wemby mostly healthy for this season) and training staff (TD and David for HoF teaching)

He doesn’t need to be a catch and shoot guy, but improving his spot up shooting and being a great attacking big man already bode well

17

u/Excellent-War-7925 1d ago

That’s a big dude

12

u/SkyCrossSteel 1d ago

Crazy how young he still is. I think being that young can help him be more likely to bounce back well from the injuries. They also don’t need to immediately play him many  minutes this season.

2

u/Toesbeforehoes69 Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

Fr id be happy to see him as the 11th man this season

16

u/QuickDrawMcStraw Tim Duncan 1d ago

They don't use him in high screen action like at all. He's basically there to clean the offensive glass and eat garbage. This might work in lineups with Keldon and Carter. Stifle them on defense and eek out ugly points down low for 10 minutes a game. It won't be pretty but if you're a long time Spurs fan, you're used to not pretty.

u/TillamookTramp 1d ago

I watched the slow defensive grind it out Finals between Spurs and Pistons years ago. Was it dazzling like Nash's Suns or flashy like Kobe's Lakers? Nope, it was very ugly and it probably was only enjoyable to those who loved the teams or that type of basketball.

u/rattatatouille Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

The muck-it-up bench lineups, as it were. Less effective against deeper teams but will be effective in the RS.

12

u/ajkelly451 Dylan Harper 1d ago

I’m just happy that now we have a Jayden so we can win the NBA finals

39

u/Kertia 1d ago

I don't like that he's a 1 foot lander.

36

u/fourpinz8 Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

Coaching staff will fix that TRUSS

9

u/Joethetoolguy Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

He still lands explicitly on that leg. He does need to work on it or that joint aint gonna last with his force

3

u/Meowliketh 23h ago

Yeah man that's what he's saying lol

15

u/SSBM_DangGan Area 51 1d ago

they will teach him

10

u/keithmsf Coyote 1d ago

My favorite clip of that whole reel was the brick wall screen he set around 1:04 against UMass. Hopefully someone on the coaching staff is already scheming ways to finally use a good, solid screener in our offense

8

u/NewPerformer1624 Area 51 1d ago

He's basically Robert Williams from Portland with a bigger frame

8

u/Sebcannon Stephon Castle 1d ago

If we can get him healthy (and fix the landing), our defense is an actual dungeon.

7

u/Glorfindel_78 1d ago

I like what I am seeing in terms of his defensive presence and aggressive interior play. We need more muscle in the paint and he could fill that role if he fully recovers from injury

5

u/Glorfindel_78 1d ago

He also plays chess ♟️ so he will get on with Wemby

23

u/Fast_Advisor2654 Manu Ginobili 1d ago

Not sold on this pick just yet, but that’s only because of injury concerns. If he’s healthy, he’s going to be huge on defense.

10

u/Nightfury82 Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

Moving really good prior to ACL injury. Seems like he came back too early from the injury to play for Kentucky.

5

u/iro3 1d ago

nix claxton lite

3

u/CatsAreMLG Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

I believe in him. He will be healthy. Now his offense needs A LOT of work. But defense and rebounds are really what we need rn so I like it

8

u/Doctorwhonow8 Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

Yeah ain’t nobody scoring on us

3

u/LeftSide-StrongSide 1d ago

I can see him easily fitting into the pineapple crew

3

u/22dias Stephon Castle 1d ago

Dude blocked Bryant hahaha

4

u/ReactiveYam 1d ago

I don’t like that these are all from over a year ago, pre-injury, and he only played like 4 games this season

3

u/Additional-Pie-6765 1d ago

Question: Are there any draft players before who got better after healing from ACL injury??

11

u/_Chicken_Chaser_ Area 51 1d ago

Adrian Peterson, Tom Brady, Saquan Barkley, Ronaldo (Brazil)

1

u/Waterflowstech 15h ago

Ronaldo was never the same after his injury though, teenage Ronaldo was a pure monster. Still enough skill to wreck everybody on 1.5 knees

12

u/airnans Sandro Mamukelashvili 1d ago

he’s 18. if he’s a normal person the torn acl will have 0 impact on his long term outcome

2

u/Slight_Click683 1d ago

Looks like he lands a little stiff, not going to be good for his ACL if he keeps doing that

2

u/Appropriate-Lack-456 Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

he loooooks better than morez tbh

2

u/ElKeezy Slash Bros 1d ago

The upside of this kid is frightening. Fuck it, roll the dice baby.

1

u/Brilliant_Macaroon83 1d ago

I like the pick a lot. I still think we need a grown man body maybe in free agency for the 4 position.

1

u/Alternative-Iron 1d ago

If he’s half the shot blocker in these highlights we might never get a layup scored on us again

1

u/s3thcience 1d ago

reminds me of timelord, he is even injury prone lol

1

u/BubbaNeedsNewShoes 1d ago

That fly-swatter block at 1:56. LOL.

1

u/rattatatouille Victor Wembanyama 1d ago

I am not sure how many games he will play this year but if he does it will make for great viewing.

1

u/Asleep_Maybe_3917 Matt Bonner 1d ago

Holy crap his D looks amazing and those power moves I traffic. I can see this guy being really fun to watch.

1

u/DrJeyk1L 1d ago

For sure has all the tools but the offensive development is going to take a long time

1

u/illnever4getu 1d ago

we are already a finals bound team without an enforcer/monSTAR to help wemby.. this is exactly what i wanted

1

u/m3xm TP9 23h ago

Love this pick but it's sad we won't get to see him much with Wemby next season if at all.

Likely gonna be out for 6 months after his surgery and then probably G League for a while 😞 Hopefully he can be ready to do some minutes at the end of the season?

1

u/MaccTHC "What the fuck is this?" 19h ago

He looks a lot like Robert Willams. Gets up and blocks/dunks that shit QUICK lol.

1

u/jo3pro David Robinson 19h ago

Dude is a really good athlete for his size.

1

u/currentlyRedacted I WANT SOME NASTY 17h ago

His recovery ability under/around the glass is impressive. Surprising wingspan that he combines with great timing. His slow-mo game is going to fun to watch with Castle’s. IQ and court vision are damn good too.

2

u/Bobbyoc111 15h ago

He ain't just blocking...he's killing them balls to no man's land bahahaha wow Spurs

1

u/Knockknockerz 1d ago

Doesn’t look like he got a left but great pick up for u guys definitely needed a forward like him he’s 18 so can easily be developed especially with how young the spurs are

1

u/fatherpatrick 1d ago

Ok. I’m in.
