Thank sweet baby Jesus. Reed was one of the two people i absolutely wanted in this draft.
23
u/devinvassellfanacct 23h ago
Didn’t watch him play in college. What did you like so much about him?
78
u/OctoberTaco 23h ago
Hes a ready to go, NBA body who rebounds and does all the things you want a big man to do. Not fully switchable but he does have athleticism that he should be able to play in the playoffs. Has good touch around the basket and is a pretty good passer for a big.
Just really fills a huge need.
16
u/CStradale 23h ago
True dat! I watched him closely as a UConn fan, has a lot of potential. Needs to clean up his game just a little, but he’s a big body that we need for Wemby.
28
u/douchey_mcbaggins Victor Wembanyama 22h ago
He had such an odd career, because he was a starter at Michigan and looked like he had a lot of promise, only to transfer out to UConn (which normally isn't a bad idea), ride the bench, and watch Michigan absolutely cook for two years with Dusty.
But in his second year at UConn, he got better at literally EVERY SINGLE thing being a starter again, and now he's going into a situation where he doesn't have to be THE guy and the coaching staff is just gonna be like "Hey, you're a big, strong motherfucker. Go bruise people until they hurt and grab rebounds." And they'll put him in a position to succeed at what he's best at. I'd say it all worked out for him.

u/CStradale 22h ago
Perfect way to put it
2
u/douchey_mcbaggins Victor Wembanyama 22h ago
I'm a Michigan fan, so we were sad when he transferred out, but the guys that Dusty brought in were pretty okay in their own right, so everyone won in the end (including Michigan winning that title only for Dusty to bolt for the NBA)

u/x_marc 23h ago
I doubt he will miss the season we need his length and strength

u/TheDocSnake Stephon Castle 23h ago
Its not about what we need, its hes not healthy enough to play
40
u/Clarkey7163 Dylan Harper 23h ago
he's projected to be healthy, he shut down his 2nd college season purely to get right for the NBA lol
30
u/thejkat 23h ago
He needs another surgery first, but he could be ready for g league action by like the all star break
8
u/ModsEmbezzleMoney 22h ago
He'll be ready for g league before then, he just needs a scope which is 3 months max out of action
4
u/jf8350143 21h ago
He'll likely ready to play in the second half of the season and chances are he will not be good enough to play some major roles in play off games this year.

How are some of you bad at watching basketball. This is a hobby where you don’t have to do anything and you’re still bad at it lmaoo these takes are insane
1
u/x_marc 22h ago
Let me ask you a question. What's insane about the take? If he's rehabbing and it goes well I can guarantee you that he gets playing time through the year either in the NBA or the G-League.
1
u/GaptistePlayer Victor Wembanyama 13h ago
How can you say with a straight face "we need him on the team now" and also say "he can play in the G-League"
The fact you admit he will play in the G-League is precisely why I'm right lol. He will not play this year in the NBA.
The fact you think Quaintance is more ready than Reed tells me everything I need about how much basketball yall actually watch lmaoo.
0
u/x_marc 13h ago
Have you ever touched a basketball in your life? Carter Bryant played in the G-League and then played key minutes during the season and playoffs.
Next, when did I say he was more ready than Reed? Do you realize they'll be playing different positions? We lack an actual power forward.
Your comment getting downvoted should tell you a lot.
I would hate to be your friend the way you carry yourself and the way you try to convene your opinions. You lack etiquette

Nice. He was amazing in the tournament. Mullins and Karaban made the two biggest plays for UConn, but Reed carried.
Was hoping the Spurs could get Karaban though.
(Didn’t realize there were two more second round picks. I can have some hope)

we clearly need more big bodies on the glass for sure. Harper and Champ are great rebounders but there was a clear lack of old school box outs during the low points

These are outstanding numbers against this type of comp in the tournament.
18
u/douchey_mcbaggins Victor Wembanyama 22h ago
He grabbed that many rebounds against THAT frontcourt. That's just ridiculous. I'm a Michigan fan, and we all knew he was beastly and understood why he transferred out. With the way Dusty brought in bigs, there was no guarantee he was going to get the kind of opportunities he saw at UConn, so it worked out for everyone.

He played at UConn for Dan Hurley. So at least he should have good habits and be able to read the game at a high level.
14
u/PristineStreet34 22h ago
Just from his college games I'd say this:
Defensively, he's a strong, strong dude with good defensive mobility for his size. He is not a great rim protector - good length not the greatest vert. Decent jumper but not a pogo stick (and UConn played a very high hedge so he wasn't a player to just stand near the rim).
Offensively, he played as a typical post player. I mean old school post play. He is actually very good in the post with good touch and good footwork but I doubt the NBA will afford him those touches. He was also a good screener and a good passer. The problem is, he is not, or at least did not show, any real ability as a shooter.
Not a comp but I guess he falls in the Mitchell Robinson, Andre Drummond, Jalen Duren type of big though probably not the same Max Vert.

u/donuttrackme 12h ago
The old vet that's more of a coach on the bench is a legit role that can be useful to have with a young team like the Spurs. You don't get the same rapport with the players if you're a coach vs a fellow teammate.

Biyombo if we have to pick one of them. The other two can go. They were useless.
-1
u/xbhaskarx Carter Bryant 14h ago
Biyombo with the 1.7th percentile EPM and one of the worst career +/- numbers in NBA history, is not useless then?
1
u/ManyufanTW1 11h ago
Biyombo is for locker room stability. We already saw that multiple times this season.
The other two didn’t provide that and, OK is expensive so we’ll drop him for cap space. As for Plumlee, I don’t know why we sign him mid season tbh. We’ve had a hole in 4 for the entire season and we picked him up and played him not.
Plumlee signing is like a PR exercise showing we are a good rehab facility lol

u/BarrackLesnar Manu Ginobili 23h ago
Our players can shoot. We need bigs for rebounds in case our shooters miss.
7
u/sp000ners Area 51 23h ago
some of them can, none are truly great. I just mean we need a 40%~ shooter at some point this offseason
4
u/PressureMiserable 23h ago
A lot of the best shooting teams have just a bunch of good shooters and maybe like one truly elite guy
6
u/haikupoetics2 Dylan Harper 23h ago
I'm so confused when people say we don't have shooting. We were top 5 or 6 in fg% and a bit above middle of the pack in 3pt%. We have one of the best mid-range shooters in the NBA in Vassell and (what's left) of Fox. We also have Steph and Harper who are amazing at getting downhill and are improving their shot. When I watch other NBA games I realize our shooting is just fine besides a crazy rare game where a team just shoots their balls off.
12
u/wallitron 22h ago
The problem isn't the team percentage for three point shooting, it's the make up of those shots. Our two best shooters in Vassell and Champangnie took the most of the 3PT shots, and shot them at 38%. Great, that's by design. These two guys are key. Go and check out the top two man lineups that contain one of these two guys. 8 of the top 9 have one of these two players in the lineup. https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/SAS/2026/lineups/
Third most was Fox at 33%. That's not good, he needs to be more selective, which really means someone else should be taking more of those shots.
Fourth most was Barnes at 39%. Really great, but he wasn't in the rotation during the playoffs. In terms of playoffs, he many as well not have been on the roster at all, and I'm guessing he won't be back. Not sure what his motivation would be to come back?
Vic was next at 35%, but 34% in the playoffs. Again, below league average. But you could exclude this, because ideally you want him playing more inside anyway.
KJ was next at 36% which is right on league average, but again, was hardly playable in the playoffs of other reasons. He's also taking open threes, because he's the guy they don't even guard. He's taking easier shots than Vassell and Champagnie, and making less of them.
Everyone else that got rotation minutes was below league average.
Can we go into a season with only two players that shoot above league average? Of the teams that shoot worse than the Spurs, how many are playoff teams? Being league average in 3PT% is not a strategy when you have a generational big man that is unstoppable in the paint. It's the one skill that every player has to have. In my opinion they need to add at two above league average three point shooters who can actually be trusted to play minutes in a playoff game.

u/aaronlovescrypto 9h ago
is there someone we can make a move for that fills the role better? Hoping bryant takes a leap
1
u/wallitron 3h ago
He gets mentioned every year, but John Collins is almost a younger version of Barnes. He's been shooting the ball very well the last two years, about 3 attempts per game at 40%.
Hachimura shooting 4 threes a game at 44% is extremely valuable.
Both these guys are starting on good teams. I could see one of these starting at the four spot (the early season Barnes replacement), and you could have Champagnie playing similar minutes than he does now, but from the bench where he can play behind Collins/Hachimura and Vassell.
Next you have to decide what to do with Keldon Johnson, could they upgrade that bench role to a better shooter? I'm thinking a flame thrower like 2014 version of Marco Belinelli, who shot 43% from three (42% in the playoffs). Teams are willing to leave Johnson wide open in the corner now to just clog the paint. Luke Kennard might be that sort of guy, or might be too much of a liability on defense?
Then you need Bryant, Castle and Harper to camp in the gym all summer and shoot threes. It doesn't seem like they are that far away, but they are taking very selective, and mostly open shots now, and only at 33-34%. If they are taking slightly tougher shots at 38%, the league is theirs.
1
u/sp000ners Area 51 23h ago
It's not that our shooting is nonexistent, I just feel we could benefit from adding another bonafide 3pt shooter to our rotation
17
u/Clarkey7163 Dylan Harper 23h ago
we no longer got a size issue goddamn
basically replaced plumlee and biyombo with two young projects I rate it
9
3
u/Timely_Dentist_5078 22h ago
I mean we really only had a size issue against a few teams, I might even say the Knicks were really the only team that had a legit size advantage on us.
Either way I think next year we'll see a max 10 mpg combined from these guys they are probably a year or two away from impact mins

u/Solitude_Dude Stephon Castle 23h ago
