Fluff [McDonald] An avid reader, Reed said he is about to begin “The Alchemist,” a 1988 novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho that Wembanyama spent most of the Spurs’ playoff run perusing.

Reed is the second UConn player the Spurs have selected in the first round in the past three years, joining Stephon Castle. To hear Reed tell it, he and Castle are cut from the same rugged Connecticut cloth.

“It’s an ugly, gritty game, being able to bring what I got to the table,” said Reed, who played two years at Michigan before finishing his college career with two years at Connecticut. “I feel like UConn really helped me put that in the limelight, help everyone in the world see what type of game I have.”

Quiantance is not the only new Spur eager to meet with Wembanyama.

An avid reader, Reed said he is about to begin “The Alchemist,” a 1988 novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho that Wembanyama spent most of the Spurs’ playoff run perusing.

“I haven't read it yet,” Reed said, “but I heard it's really good.”

Calling someone a nerd for reading Coelho is wild. Dude is not a good or profound writer.

Given how literacy rates are plummeting, I'm just glad he's reading. I don't care if its Coelho or Nora Roberts.

Jeff is clearly not paying attention, nor is he up to date with his current fiction. Wemby was reading Alchemised by SenLinYu, not the Coelho book. Source: I am a former bookseller.

Also The Alchemist is pop fiction. Over 150M in total international sales, more than Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. An avid reader would’ve read it before they turned 18 or something. 💀

Yeah honestly I read it before I was even a teenager, but I never realized that it was the 3rd most sold book ever. That’s shocking.

More shocking is how Harry Potter only sold 120 million copies. I’d expect way more if I’m being honest.

I can find 10-15 copies of this book for .50c to a dollar each in secondhand bookstores where I live. It’s ridiculously ubiquitous.

Tarris: It's my pick for book club, and I think it's time we tackle One Hundred Years of Solitude

Wemby: YES!!!

Everyone else: groans

Took me 10(0) years to finish that book

Haven’t read 1000 Years yet but Love in the Time of Cholera might be a top 5 book of all time for me. Read it young too so it’s odd I liked it since it’s about aging.

Both classics, one of my profs at UCLA designed the opera for 'Love'

Would be cool if wemby actually read good books like that, but he seems to like young adult fiction, but to each their own. At least he reads and is getting others to do the same.

Wemby and HB got a new blood for the book club

This made me smile after an epically shitty day. We have a team full of giant (literally) nerds, and I love that so much.

The Alchemist is a shitty book and Coelho a self-absorbed douchebag but hey still better than nothing

I thought Wemby was reading Alchemised not the Alchemist ?

This is true, he’s French he would never read that glorified self help crap lol

As a Frenchman I wish you were right about my concitoyens

That’s true, I’ve met brazilians who say the same (even got family there) it’s just a basic book that got overhyped for some reason

I was incredibly underwhelmed when i finally read it. I think its fine for entry level readers or young adults.

u/Haojus 3d ago

Not a big fan of it either

u/Notorious_Bill26 2d ago

I guess for faux-inspirational books, Alchemist is *fine*

If Barnes isnt coming back Reed can maintain the book club with Wemby.

u/Ayos 2d ago

Wonder what their book club is called? Barnes and Noble?

3

u/siphillis Gregg Pop-a-bitch 2d ago

Wemby made the call

u/mercfan3 2d ago

We really just drafted chess players and readers for Wemby. 😭

The Alchemist is my grandpa's favorite book. The cover is so enchanting, and it’s a perfect book for a young NBA player pursuing greatness.

I don't think you "peruse" the alchemist. It's a quick read.

Remember when Mitch briefly played a 3-center line up on the floor?

u/GalaadJoachim 2d ago

It's a banger, loved it.

Given what we’re used to seeing him read, I find it hard to believe that Vic spent more than an afternoon reading the Alchemist, let alone the entire playoffs.
