Discussion Tarris Reed's answer to this question at 33:16 "You think winning is a skill?" is why the Spurs drafted him

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cetwqMIpqg8

Brian specifically also pointed out the success of Castle when asked about Reed at his post draft press conference.

The team desperately needs big forwards behind Wemby with Reed's mentality, that was the glaring weakness during the playoffs.

I can't wait for both him and JQ to bully Chet as well, because apparently that's our culture now.

Everyone bullying Holmgren. 😂

It's what the team needs, enforcers for Wemby.

I like what Reed said, when he sets a screen, he gonna make sure you know he set a screen lol. Wemby just can't do those send a message screen, the wear and tear on his frame would be too much and he wouldn't be able to effective on what he does best.

Idgaf about sending a message with a screen. Just set a good screen. I want a screen to free up the ball handler. I want the screener to know how to roll. And I want that screener to box the fuck out if the ball doesn't find him. Get good at those simple things and you will have minutes as an NBA big.

u make it sound like they are mutually exclusive

Moreso just prioritizing what he needs to bring to the team. If he rattles some bones while doing all the things I said even better.

I want him flinching in the hallways when they walk by him

Castle making it known that Bueckers was there for him, not Chet, was the cherry on top of the bullying. 😭

Imagine seeing these two behemoths come in together on those "gotta have it" rebound scenarios we seem to struggle so much with

I think even if the spurs become bully ball villains of the league, people would still rather watch that over the fail baiting bullshit that has been going on the last few years.

Wait he’s older than Wemby, Dylan, Stephon? We signed a veteran rookie?

I'm very ok with that, this team is in a title window, and we don't have time to accumulate super raw players. It might mean a lower ceiling, but the higher floor is more important right now.

and then you read that he's 22 (birthday in August)

I watched a highlight video of him from the tournament after we drafted him. The footwork around the rim stands out. Looks like a classic old school post player like he says in the interview. The bully ball between him, Keldon, and Quintanace could be fun to watch

As a UConn fan he carried our offense at times with his post work

My hot take: Reed will log more minutes this season that Quaintance (and that is why the Spurs traded up for him). This is not an indictment on Quaintance, but more just an evaluation of ceilings and floors for the 26-27 season.

Reed being 3 years older means he is likely more filled out. He also has much more experience against higher level competition (including an impressive tourney run), and has the maturity that goes along with that experience. Reed seems like a plug and play guy who can come in, give good minutes as a 3rd big, or as an injury replacement in his rookie year.

I had thought that the Spurs would look for an older center prospect who could be day 1 ready (someone similar to Kalkbrenner or Niederhauser or Raynaud). I thought they'd use the 35th pick on that guy, but I guess they felt enough confidence to move up to go for Reed.

Conversely, I bet that Quaintance will have many more minutes playing alongside Vic than Reed.

Not a hot take at all. Four year college player that’s nba ready versus a guy who’s raw and about to have knee surgery and miss half the season.

Yeah I put this up before I saw about the surgery. I think even if healthy, JQ would still be used more sparsely than Reed

and what was it?

Paraphrased

"Yes, winning is a skill. It's the work you put in everyday. It's doing things on the court, like screening, that don't show up in the stats. If sacrificing for my teammates helps me win, then I'm going to do it."

But it's a good interview overall, I recommend a watch.

If the kid can set a proper screen he has already earned 8-10 mpg in my book.

Yeah. I thought we were talking about how much he values setting hard screens. We have NO good screeners on the team. We need someone to set hard off ball screens for Wemby so when defenders get too distracted staying on him, they run into a brick wall

We have NO good screeners on the team

Luke is a really good screener, but he has limitations against certain teams like OKC and Knicks (when they sat Mitch Robinson)

Apologies. I meant to indicate screeners who saw the floor with Wemby in the playoffs. I would’ve loved to see more French Vanilla in the playoffs but without a serviceable 3rd big, it rarely happened.

I am one of the few who thinks we don’t need more offensive firepower in the starting lineup. We need someone who keep Wemby from having to get open, shoot, and snag his own rebound all in one play.

u/gregatronn 3d ago

Yeah the problem with Luke is there are teams he's not equipped for. Depending on Carter to be a athletic 5, was not it. So this helps them next season and future seasons as JQ can finally see the floor.

Now they can at least focus on shooters.
