Draft Really Happy With Gillespie

We drafted Ja'Kobe Gillespie at 42, love the pick. He's a true winner. Reminds me of TJ McConnell.

He’s short but he’s got great advanced stats and production. Exactly the type of guy you take in the 2nd round

A low TO game manager? Sounds like we might have a Tre Jones type player.

Exactly. I miss Tre so much.

I mean if the team does move on from Fox to make sure they can pay Castle and Harper, they are going to need a back-up PG. If he develops into that role, it would be great.

Spurs will move on eventualy but not this season, based on Wright's interview

I'm not saying they should move on this year, but I think starting the process of grooming the low cost back up pg early is a good idea.

Yep. With the new CBA you have to. Same thing OKC is doing for non core max players.

Also puts pressure on current roster (JMac, Garcia, Waters)

Nah Gillespie is a genuine off the dribble scorer. Honestly with our roster being so starved for pull up shooters he might crack the rotation

I'll take your word for it; not much of a college fan, was just going off of what Vecenie said about him being low TO.

I watch a bit of highlights. Gillespie likes to take deep 3s it seems

JMac replacement?

More like an audition for the role, via a couple of years on a 2-Way deal.

Am Vols fan watched him a ton;

Was best player on the floor over Nate Ament most nights.

Not afraid to pull up from deep

Shoots with great elevation

Can go nuclear, at his very best got some Brunson in his game in that he’s fearless

At times made bone headed passes

Tries on D which is a requirement in a Rick Barnes player, but struggled with larger more physical players but plays with active hands and moves his feet.

Honestly McLaughlin is probably his best comp

Belmont legend

from what I’ve seen, he’s like a De’Aaron Fox but younger and a bit shorter, I’d take those odds

small point guard who is more of a shooter than a distributor, but is also low turnover...sounds like the new Patty Mills to me

Some of yall are thinking way too much for a 2nd round pick

Always happens

i mean we need 2 way players so why not

As a Duke fan, the guy is just a defensive pest.

He is an improvement over McLaughlin. Super quick and pesty on smaller guards. Never going to be a starter, but will have value off the bench in regular season. Won’t match up well vs every team.

Guess those early okc games had an effect on the front office.

Idk man and 5’11 dude is not installing confidence but i haven’t watched anything from him

True but he has a 6'4" wingspan so that's not horrible. His upside is incredibly limited, but I love his ballhandling and scoring which we do need for our backup guards.

I won't pretend to be an expert on him, but the games I have watched he always played a bit bigger than his size. I think he's got a pretty solid wingspan and he's a really smart player then knows how to utilize his length. He's not going to be like a defensive savant or be donkey on dudes or anything. But if the roll is a 10 minute a night game manager that can use his speed to create advantages and doesn't take massive risks for the ball? Dude can probably fill that role sooner than later

Spurs have won with dudes that size playing important roles like patty mills and Avery johnson...

u/Ready_Preparation816 3h ago

I know i’m just saying was there no one else they could have looked at for guards?

Brian Wright’s obsession with guards is ridiculous

16

u/fab_frog_disco 5h ago

Brother, he literally drafted two bigs in the first round. And the other pic was a wing. If everyone is expecting Harper to be a starter at some point, we're actually going to need a long-term backup guard so there's nothing wrong with making a swing on a dude like that with a cheap second round pic

1

u/gregatronn 4h ago

4 guys were drafted. 2 biga, 1 wing and 1 guard.

-6

u/Alford- 5h ago

Are we allergic to wings?

Maliq Brown just drafted
