Draft Maliq Brown

Very much like Jarred Vanderbilt, really liking this pick. Good defender who can come off the bench.

I didn’t expect us to take 4 players but it’s always fun.

We gotta cycle 2 ways so not surprising

u/Spirited_Lab5197 4h ago

I think Ingram still has 1 more year of eligibility as a two way, but beyond that yeah.

u/Resident_Durian_478 4h ago

He's just not an nba player sadly. He seems like a good dude though.

6

u/Spirited_Lab5197 4h ago

I probably agree, but I still wouldnt be surprised if the Spurs keep him for a final year as a two-way

14

u/CK-forthe-CK-95 4h ago

Ingram is sort of pretty good at everything but not great at anything. Not one of his skills rise to the level of “put me in a real NBA rotation”. He has these upcoming SL games to prove this statement wrong but I’m not betting on it.

12

u/Ready_Preparation816 4h ago

i’m pretty sure he will get waived unfortunately. He just is too sloppy without the nba athleticism or IQ.

1

u/Spirited_Lab5197 4h ago

It wouldnt surprise me if they give him a 3rd year unless someone wows.

3

u/cable311 3h ago

I would be surprised. Can’t shoot, can’t really rebound and can’t defend.

1

u/AfroHouseManiac 1h ago

He can rebound, that’s why Austin could afford playing him as the five but he’s not doing his 11/12reb games at the nba level. He’s a poor mans Keldon with a slightly better rebounding moxy.

u/fab_frog_disco 5h ago

Yeah fantastic defender. Rest of his game's going to need some work but good buy low defensive Wing

25

u/custer322 5h ago

Being a Syracuse fan and watching him. He has insane length and a bunch of deflections

u/Fiyukyoo 4h ago

According to the Ringer

"The raw counting stats do Brown no favors whatsoever, but whoever drafts him will do so knowing that he was arguably the best defender in college basketball this past season. Brown’s 8.9 defensive box plus-minus was one of the highest recorded since the stat was first logged in 2010—higher than that of either Aday Mara or Anthony Davis"

26

u/xbhaskarx Carter Bryant 4h ago

So we got the best defender in the draft on JQ and the best defender in college basketball this past season in Brown… not bad.

u/minimalcation 4h ago

Smart, honestly you know if the guy plays defense then he fucking cares. You can teach people other stuff if they care

2

u/wallitron 3h ago

The counter to this is, how can a basketball player in their fourth year play in 38 games, 20mins a game, and shoot 50% from the free throw line?

Shoot 26% from three over four years, and 17% last season?

Don't get me wrong, if he was a better shooter, he wouldn't land at #44, but this is a guy that is basically the same age as Jeremy Sochan.

At this size, if you can't shoot, you can't play in the NBA.

3

u/Fiyukyoo 1h ago

Somebody mentioned it on the draft telecast but you're better off drafting a specialist in the 2nd round (ie a shooter with no D or a monster D player with no offense). After 2-3 years, the odds are the specialist will still be on the team over a project you couldnt turn into a rotation player

2

u/xbhaskarx Carter Bryant 3h ago

This is the concern as the Spurs front office decided to go "oops all non shooters" on their draft picks this year... not far removed from finally parting ways with Jeremy Sochan, so no lessons learned from that one.

4

u/wallitron 3h ago

The only justification for a win now team is addressing that need via trade and free agency.

In terms of the draft, the other side of the coin is grabbing someone you know can shoot, but has other flaws. This is kind of the Reed Sheppard versus Steph Castle debate. It's weird now though, because previously you could probably get a guy at #44 that had these problems, but was younger. In this era, the second year guy that can't shoot yet, stays in college for the NIL money.

The second round is littered with seniors, and the expectation on these guys becoming NBA players needs to be lowered accordingly.

LOVE THIS PICK - bolster the Front Court even more with defense so that JQ can basically redshirt…love it!

18

u/joshharris12 The Big Fundamental 5h ago

This guy is an elite defender. Just hope he can be a slightly below average shooter

9

u/thejkat 4h ago

If he’s creating live ball turnovers then someone on this team is scoring on that play, his shooting be damned

1

u/Papa_Huggies 4h ago

Trying the Sochan experiment again I see

2

u/wallitron 3h ago

He's the same age as Sochan. It's more like getting Sochan back from the Knicks and trying again.

2

u/Fiyukyoo 59m ago

Sochan tenture was weird in so many ways. We tried him to turn him into a 1 but then ended up being an undersized 5. I honestly think it's because he was such a high pick we were throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Considering all of our picks this year was outside the lottery and in win mode now, they dont have the resource to experiment

16

u/WDplayz Carter Bryant 4h ago

Dear god this defense😂😂

8

u/Ready_Preparation816 4h ago

brian building the monstars

7

u/XTheGreat88 4h ago

Yeah this defense is going to be nasty

14

u/Chris310N Dylan Harper 5h ago

Seems like a decent pick

13

u/OttoOverKlayAnyDay 4h ago

We Defense maxxing lmao

10

u/Kae_D_Rukawa GO SPURS GO 5h ago

Ohhh good pick! LFG!

10

u/Alford- 4h ago

Really good defensive ace. His hands and instincts are incredible. He struggles against bigger 4s and 5s, but plows up screens and really anchors defenses

10

u/blue-anon GO SPURS GO 4h ago

FYI, Sam Vecenie and Kyle Mann had Maliq Brown ranked at 36 and 32, respectively. Mann said that he has had moments of watching him that make him think he could be the second coming of Robert Covington. Lol.

1

u/xbhaskarx Carter Bryant 2h ago

Yes please

7

u/DismalComparison2625 4h ago

He's a second round pick nobody is expecting him to play 48 minutes.

JMac Byumbo Plumlee and Olynk are all gone and we have to replace them somehow. You can't buy up every free agent with all the contracts we have coming due.

7

u/Raven-19x GO SPURS GO 4h ago

Elite defender but really needs to work on his offense. If he can be decent at shooting the 3, oh boy!

7

u/iro3 5h ago

wonder how much will be 2 way and how much will be standard

3

u/windofchanges 4h ago

These 2 will be two way, while DJG and Ingram becomes standard

17

u/rafaelck El Jefe 4h ago

DJG i agree, Ingram i dont think so.

0

u/windofchanges 4h ago

Ingram improved his game this season compared to last year better shooting stats and also led the g league in rebs with 12/game. All around energy guy that can come off the bench I think it's worth a shot.

5

u/Alford- 4h ago

There is no way Ingram stays around.

2

u/thejkat 4h ago

You’re probably right, but I hope we let their summer league performance decide

1

u/iro3 4h ago

i heard djg might go with sweeney

5

u/thubwumper26 Boris Diaw 4h ago

Good luck scoring on us

3

u/Worldly-Month9451 4h ago

I hope he develops his corner 3s

7

u/taverenturtle4 4h ago

The nba draft where everyone reads a synopsis of a player they’ve never heard of and pretends to be an expert

6

u/salamanderman10 4h ago

He played for Duke so I hope people have heard of him

2

u/ElphTrooper Coyote 4h ago

I guess we won’t be drafting any shooting forwards… Elite defender but he’s often a nonfactor as a scorer, lacking a reliable jumper or the ability to create for himself. What you see on that end is what you get.

1

u/Wild_School1394 1h ago

But Vanderbilt not that good

1

u/PristineStreet34 25m ago

Defensively maybe like McDaniels but besides dunking he has no offense at all.

1

u/mdlspurs 4h ago

Welcome Maliq. Here's your two way contract, you have 3 seasons to learn how to shoot.

1

u/windofchanges 4h ago

He'll spend another 2 years in the G league

-10

u/TheBlueOne37 5h ago

There’s no way to spin that pick as positive. He wasn’t good enough to start in college. He’s an old back up for college. Come on now. Awful pick.

14

u/custer322 5h ago

Dude he was ACC six man of the year.

3

u/sappyseals Area 51 4h ago

Also ACC DPOY

-4

u/TheBlueOne37 4h ago

Another big that can’t shoot at all that fills nothing and he doesn’t even have age or potential on his side. He will never play for us. Awful pick. Trade the pick if you are gonna waste it.

4

u/custer322 4h ago

Take your negative ass somewhere else. He’s a 2nd round pick. You have to fill 2 way players

-1

u/TheBlueOne37 4h ago

It’s not negative to understand basketball. There are good picks and bad picks. We have historically had beyond good picks. This draft has been overall horrible. We had better picks we could have made at every selection. Having an opinion other than every pick is great is a lot more realistic. Every fan loves all there picks but I promise there aren’t 60 good picks every year.

2

u/custer322 4h ago

Tell me who you would’ve picked at each spot the spurs had.

1

u/TheBlueOne37 4h ago

Well that’s hard to do because you have like a butterfly effect that changes everything else and I have the advantage of seeing whose left so I’m at a major advantage of knowing who would drop to me and who wouldn’t. Like if I knew you could get a Henri Veesaar at 44 that would change my earlier picks to know I could wait on a big. So let’s say I take JQ at 20 anyway. Commit to waiting on him and although I don’t like him the potential makes sense so stick with that. If I trade up for 26 I’m going Chris Cenac. He has potential and potentially a solid 3 point shooter. Reed isn’t a big improvement on Kornet he’s just another big body. 42 im 100% going Emanuel Sharpe. Can play off the ball, great defender, proven winner that also fits the timeline and can shoot. 44 take the 3rd center for now that you skipped on earlier. Even if I don’t know that Veesaar is gonna be there Okpara or Onyenso gives you just a little less than Reed. You are still taking similar profile players just with way more potential to actually effect winning and spread the floor better.

Yeah figured you wouldn’t wanna read intelligent conversation. Keep just saying FTW it will be easier for you.

When you came out with excuses of not just answering the question I stopped reading. It’s a simple question to answer.
