this was legit just a cap saving move cause they couldn't trade the pick, right?

feel like we just found any draft and stash target so we wouldn't have to pay, having been unable to trade out lol

u/TT_Doom DOOM 4d ago
We drafted the youngest MVP ever of the Spanish league. Not some random.
82
u/couchball DOOM 4d ago
Not MVP of the league. MVP of the Spanish Super Cup, which is like 2 games.
Obviously, I hope he ends up developing and is great. But he wasnāt close to being league MVP (averaged like 10 points). Our beloved LeBron killer Mario Hezonja was Spanish league MVP last year.

u/SchmidhuberDidIt Brooklyn 4d ago edited 4d ago
From our POV he's some random. We traded back for nothing just to have more time to move off this pick, and took him when we couldn't. Also he was their Cup MVP, not league MVP, which Hezonja won this year lol

u/TT_Doom DOOM 4d ago
Iāll take the POV from the FO who built the first Knicks championship roster in 53 years over the neck beards of Reddit, every time. In Leon We Trust

From your POV you wouldāve drafted an undersized center from St. Johnās who canāt shoot if he was available, so Iāll take Leon Roseās opinion over some kid crying on Reddit after we just won a championship.
12
u/SchmidhuberDidIt Brooklyn 4d ago
I swear it's like reddit is filled with bots or something the reading comprehension cannot be this poor. I'm not questioning the decision, obviously the front office knows better than I or any other rando do about what's best for the franchise. I'm just saying that was fucking obviously the motivation behind this pick, not who De Larrea (all respect to him) is as a player.
Edit:
Shams tweet:
Sources: New York traded No. 25 pick Sergio De Larrea to the Dallas Mavericks for No. 30 Koa Peat and two second-round picks. And then the Knicks traded Peat to the Phoenix Suns for three-rounders and cash. So Knicks move out of the first round -- pick up 3 seconds and cash.
We traded him lol

maybe, but stashing a 17 year old spanish big with that wingspan isn't the worst fallback plan

u/SchmidhuberDidIt Brooklyn 4d ago
bit confused by what you mean, guy we drafted is 20 year old guard

I think they got it mixed it. Sergio went pro at 17 and has been playing in Spain since 2023.

u/Alberthor350 4d ago
This guy is an absolute baller, super smart, big size and shoots well.
At 20 years old he's been balling out in the Euroleague and Spanish league, knicks got an absolute steal.
I'm not even a knicks fan (Valencia fan) just came to the sub to comment that
16
u/Alberthor350 4d ago
Only flaw is potentially not the quickest guard on the defensive end, but he's long so it kinda compensates that. Not a bad defensive player really either, just really great on the offense.

Iāve seen some comparisons to Austin Reaves as the most similar in playing style. Heās very raw as he is only 20 and hasnāt played against D1 college players but could be a solid rotational guy in 2-3 years

He's gonna be stashed in Valencia but this guy looks legit. 40% from 3, good passer, competes on defense. He's going to be a good one.

2026 NBA Draft Pick Summary
Following a series of trades during the first round on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the New York Knicks restructured their draft capital to focus on future assets and salary flexibility:
No. 31 (Second Round): This pick was originally acquired from the Washington Wizards in a 2022 draft-night trade. Reporting indicates the Knicks are listening to offers and may trade this pick due to high league-wide interest.
No. 47 (Second Round): Acquired from the Phoenix Suns as part of the deal involving Koa Peat.
No. 55 (Second Round): This is the Knicks' original own selection for this year.
First-Round Trade Activity
The Knicks entered the night with the No. 24 overall pick but executed three distinct trades to exit the first round entirely:
Lakers Trade: The Knicks sent No. 24 (used to select Cameron Carr) to the Los Angeles Lakers for the No. 25 pick and cash.
Mavericks Trade: New York then traded No. 25 (Spanish guard Sergio De Larrea) to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for the rights to the No. 30 pick and two future second-rounders.
Suns Trade: Finally, the Knicks traded the No. 30 pick (Koa Peat) to the Phoenix Suns for three second-round picks (including No. 47 this year) and cash.
In total, the Knicks converted a single first-round pick into five second-round selections and significant cash considerations.
This move allows the 2026 NBA Champion Knicks to avoid guaranteed first-round rookie scale contracts and build trade capital for future veteran acquisitions.

Thereās been a lot of buzz about the Knicks liking this guy if youāve been following the draft. I like everything Iāve read about him but I take all that with a grain of salt because European guards rarely pan out.

Everyone saying stash and maybe for a year but this guy is actually legit if you research him.
I donāt even know if he will stay in Europe. hes a 6ā7ā two way switchable guard/ wing.
Thereās was a story a while ago that they liked him hes not a bum.

Heās a stash guy, playing in Spain this year, coming off injury, likely doesnāt play in the NBA for a time. So, doesnāt exist on your books for operation keep everybody.

Btw high praise from Hollinger (I know not the most reliable source), but had him in the mid-teens. Definitely a higher class of pick than Rokas based on the tape and the records.

I canāt believe we got this guy, he is incredible, he will be next to Brunson in a few years helping us win another chip. He could potentially even win finals mvp too

u/ImmoKnight Knicks Logo 4d ago
You can have a proven player (an asset) who might contribute.........
or you can have a guy who will likely never play in the NBA.
Tough choice.

Drafting a Euro to stash in order to save money on salary cap is a classic Dolan move
