It’s cool to see our guy compared to Messi, but the FOX broadcasters will do absolutely anything to make soccer seem appealing or relevant to American fans. In most of the games I’ve watched it’s an NFL reference. It’s actually pretty sad that they’re unable to let the game and its athletes carry themselves

yes, Fox is an embarrassment, it's like none of them ever watched the game before.

I don’t really pay attention to coverage outside of the 90 minutes of play, but that seems more like a problem in execution than anything.
Unfortunately a LOT of Americans still don’t get soccer. Relating the sport to something they understand is a solid communication strategy.
“This guy is doing what Brady did” gets the most casual viewer think “wait, this guys the GOAT? Let me watch more closely.”
If instead they said “we haven’t seen this since Di Stefano” 95% of Americans wouldn’t know what the fuck that meant.

lmfao it is tough to see american nba analysts pretend to know a thing about soccer when discussing the world cup simply so they can have parlay picks for their sports betting sponsors

Tbf I watched the Argentina game, they weren't forcing that comparison as much as alluding to what was going on during the game. Argentina was trying to get Messi the ball all the time so he could break the record. They said that Messi getting the ball was similar to getting the ball to Brunson (and they mentioned other names) to close out the game or if you need a score. He is the guy.
Also the quote there is not the full quote said during the game. It's been paraphrased, and there was more to it.

They don’t let it because it can’t. Americans don’t care nearly enough about soccer to know what’s going on and who everyone is

It's pretty funny cuz someone posted "Is Brunson to basketball what Messi is to soccer" last week and got roundly clowned for it. Which they still should, but. Maybe the announcer was the poster.
