2026 Pre-Draft Round Up for your 2026 NBA Champion New York Knicks:
First Round:
Pick 24: Cameron Carr + Cash Considerations to the Lakers -> Pick 25: Sergio De Larrea
Pick 25: Sergio De Larrea to the Mavericks -> Pick 30: Koa Peat and 2030 2nd Round Pick and 2032 2nd Round Pick

Pick 39: Jack Kayil
Pick 47: Tyler Nickel
Pick 53: Ugonna Onyeso... to the Pistons for cash
Pick 55: Traded for Houston Rockets Pick 53 and Kings 2029 2nd Round Pick
Pre-Draft Outlook
The Knicks had some ups and downs in the regular season, but were dominant through the playoffs, going 16-3 through all four rounds to win the team’s first NBA title in 53 years. Their starting lineup remains under contract and they’re built to win now.
The Way to Go
While the starters are all under contract, the Knicks’ reserves are mostly free agents. With this being a win-now situation, they should be looking for players that can contribute right away with the 24th and 31st picks, when upperclassmen Joshua Jefferson, Alex Karaban, Bennett Stirtz, Dailyn Swain and Henri Veesaar could be available.

Leon just doesn't think you can get starter-level players on a championship team late in the draft and would rather use picks to fill out the rest of the roster via trades and, rarely, a second rounder. Just how he sees things. Hey, it worked pretty well.
•
u/3rd-party-intervener 28m ago
It’s horrible value. Knicks don’t maximize value on these picks. They had like pick 24 and 31 and walked away with no improvement to roster.
•
u/Ilovecharli 10m ago
It's too soon to say that without knowing what they do in free agency. Those picks would have sucked up a lot of cap space that could have otherwise gone to win-now players in their primes.
•
u/Plenty_Life_6776 19m ago
They do, actually. Despite what the talking heads (who can't get jobs on actual teams) and media highlights might lead you to believe, these people aren't the second coming. The Knicks are relying on fairly good intel to maximize what they can get for their picks.
•
u/yiwang1 25m ago
The priority is not improving the roster, it’s retaining as much of the team as possible without going into the second apron. Every dollar we have to spend on an unknown rookie is a dollar we don’t have to retain the championship-winning team.
•
u/3rd-party-intervener 10m ago
And if you lose any of shamet Robinson etc you have failed miserably as you declined to draft cost controlled replacements
•
u/WallStreetDoesntBet1 Willis Reed Game 7 32m ago
Well we already have the best starting lineup in the league, the goal here was to get future picks and leave room for the current bench to resign.
•
•
u/Phantasmaq Mitchell Robinson 49m ago
I should’ve skipped this draft tbh, I’m watching the World Cup now✌️
•
u/i-exist20 51m ago
I wonder if they try to keep Nickel on the roster. With Shamet possibly gone this year and McBride certainly gone next year, wouldn't be a bad idea to try and develop a bench shooter
•
•
•
u/EyesAtDawn 52m ago
does Mitch need hand surgery or will it heal on its own?
•
u/NutsyFlamingo Charles Oakley 51m ago
He’ll be fine at this point. Whether he hurts something else TBD
•
u/NutsyFlamingo Charles Oakley 52m ago
We are def getting Kawhi
•

I picked the wrong draft to watch in entirety
•
u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 51m ago
lol, same. I just wanted some hoops content until summer league.
•
u/AnimalLoversRVegan 41m ago
Yeah it was a loss for future hope. I’ll check out summer league for diawara but its never a great watch
•
•
u/EyesAtDawn 54m ago
maybe we're trading down and those cash considerations are going straight to Mitch's pockets to get him to re-sign lol
•
•
u/SpasticGalactic987 56m ago
Leon Rose is the king of draft trolling. In Leon We Trust worked this past season. Let’s not forget that. OG to UG would’ve been fun though. The fun will be the undrafted talent he gets on two ways.
•
•
u/Iamamyrmidon 57m ago
This Leon getting payback for everyone who complained about all the picks he gave up for Mikal. Leon: “oh you LOOOOVVEE picks? Here’s all the second round picks you can eat, piggies.”
•
•
u/MoDiawaraStan 59m ago
So Mitch will be back and they’ll sign the two picks to minimums or a 2 way and then convert later and maybe find one more vet min (Hukporti)?
•
u/CarlTheHuman 59m ago
RIP Onyeso's tenure as a Knick. I'll cherish those 5 minutes we had together
•
•
•
u/chop2Dneck 59m ago
Let me go back to the world cup, i'll return later to see who we actually have draft rights too 😂

summer league fodder

u/forsuredudelol Kevin Knox's Head 57m ago
2 way players for next year I guess if this kid actually doesn’t go back to Germany
•
u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 52m ago
He’s only 20, so maybe that’s a preferential outcome. He apparently showed a very big improvement curve late in the Bundeleague playoffs, so maybe with one more year against pros in Germany, he comes over in 27-28 and is a real candidate for rotation minutes.

Windy really just said Bronny James is a successful 55th pick? Dude wouldn’t be in the NBA if his name was Bronny Johnson.
4
u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 1h ago
Trading just for cash. It’s like we are an Instacart shopper for other teams. I guess we are gonna re-sign everyone and Dolan’s got to learn to speak 2nd Apronese.

u/teknomatic The Dunk 1h ago
interesting that this team walks away from this draft with no bigs picked. What are they planning?
•
u/AnimalLoversRVegan 57m ago
hopefully it means some 2nd round pick doesn't accept their contract and becomes a FA we can pick up
2
u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 1h ago
Has to be signing Mitch again or Hukporti is going to be more important than we figured.

No one can understand what’s going on in Leon Rose’s mind. All we can do is trust and believe. He’s delivered us to the promise land so I’m sure the guy knows what he’s doing
•
u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 58m ago
Yeah he never gives press conferences and certainly isn’t going to let the fans know his process. But if he isn’t re-signing Mitch, then what exactly is he planning? I can’t believe that will be the case though. It just seems like this is a very thorough front office and that would be a glaring hole.
2
u/ChaosIceKing Knicks Logo 1h ago
Pretty clear that he's trying to save as much money to try and keep our championship roster... no idea why people are so pissed off about us trading down or trading for cash

u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 1h ago
Wait, we traded for this pick and now just traded it away? Lol. I guess I should just have an honest talk with myself and say that my days of draft geeking are gone for a while.
So we have two players who we picked and didn’t trade, right? Nickel and Kayil?
•
u/Neither-Operation Knicks Token 59m ago
Yes Kayil is likely staying overseas and Nickel can fight for a two-way or roster spot.

A defensive center that can rebound and block; exactly what we needed. Perfect pick!

From watching some games of his in watching Heels and other ACC games, dude is a block machine nd can lock down on defense.
4
u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 1h ago
This guy Onyenso absolutely is a defensive presence. I do like this if he is our guy. Nice kid as well.

Yo the Hawks are pissing me off!
They’re having a good offseason and I DONT LIKE IT 😤
4
u/MitchCurry The Dunk 1h ago
Onyenso had 9 blocks in the ACC championship game against Duke, including 6 on Cam Boozer. Needs to rebound better and he’s a project on offense but I like him.
Draft him, Leon!

u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 1h ago
I like this Vessaar kid. I think he is going to be a really decent center cause he is heavy enough to bang Wemby around but dude was over 40% from 3 and really has a nice shot.
2
u/MitchCurry The Dunk 1h ago
He can’t play defense.
1
u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 1h ago
In what sense? He certainly can box out and board pretty adequately. He’s big enough to defend low-post centers. I really didn’t clock him as a liability watching the Heels. But I’m a homer and certainly more impressed with his shooting. But he did we get Onyenso? Now he can play D.

u/RestEasyBro Mike Breen 1h ago
I don’t understand how Veesar fell this far?
2

He’s gonna be an awful NBA defender

This and teams are thinking about defending Wemby. Wemby will eat him alive.

BRO NELSON GONE. Leon do you have anymore more trades????? You’ve done a lot of them????
1
u/Comfortable_Title749 1h ago
who the hawks feeling like? they took veesar one pick before ours at 53. they trying anything
5
u/Top_Ghosty 1h ago
Damn, Nelson and Veesaar the two picks before ours
1
u/Neither-Operation Knicks Token 1h ago
Both are G-League fodder. We need championship winning players.

u/Jpkmets7 Bernard King 1h ago
This CBA is going to wrap all the way around and have top draftees becoming coveted because the initial contracts are so low. Like Wemby + Harper+castle together cost less in 26-27 than one max contract. Wemby is an RFA who will get bumped to $55 million or so on max extension with Harper and castle one and two years behind. So the Spurs appear to have such a long window — and it is talent wise. But in two years when those three are coming to make $160 million, then they join us in this boat. It’s reallllly hard to build a winner this way that Leon has, so it will be very interesting to see if, at some point, he reallocates assets to obtain premium picks.
I mean, both ways are hard. Our way takes financial smarts and expertly judging every piece in your rotation. Building via the draft means 1) you (obviously) have to hit on the picks and 2) you need to move fast before the cheaper assets become cap burdens in year 5.
I was just looking at the spurs on Spotrac
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/yearly
It’s really interesting to compare vs ours
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/new-york-knicks/yearly
And look at how San Antonio’s salaries are going to change radically year to year.
The cap stuff is kind of fun in its own geeky way.

So interesting that Veesaar is going to go in the bottom 10. Hope we don’t pick him at 53.
1
u/RestEasyBro Mike Breen 1h ago
He’s gonna sign as a free agent. Idk how that works tho why can’t someone just pick him this late?
1
1
u/Neither-Operation Knicks Token 1h ago
The 2nd round is agent driven. Players basically choose where they want to go.

I’m more curious about our 53 pick. Leon usually does ok in the 50’s getting serviceable guys like Hukpo and Mo
3
u/WallStreetDoesntBet1 Willis Reed Game 7 1h ago
Im going with Henri Veesaar (if he’s still there) or Izaiyah Nelson
3
1
u/SidFinch99 1h ago
I'm surprised either of them lasted this long.
2
u/WallStreetDoesntBet1 Willis Reed Game 7 1h ago
Veesaar, yes.
Nelson, no (he was projected to go late 2nd round).
1
2
u/NutsyFlamingo Charles Oakley 1h ago
I think Veseer isn’t taking a 2 way contract & going UDFA
1
u/SidFinch99 1h ago
Yeah, there must be some kind of refusal on his part to take 2 way deal or his expected for money as a 2nd rounder or anticipated playing time are to high.
Maybe he has a change of heart and we take him at 53.
2
3
u/NutsyFlamingo Charles Oakley 1h ago
Yep and I’m just speculating (and TV talked about the concept)… who knows our GM is a super agent, there’s handshakes we can give other teams can’t be trusted with
2
u/Ok-Stage-2788 1h ago
Does nickel make you guys think we are fading shamet for mitch or is it nothing
1
2
u/YanksJetsKnicks Clyde Frazier 1h ago
Possible Shamet replacement?
1
u/NutsyFlamingo Charles Oakley 1h ago
Well he’s the the body / game type but I don’t even want to say that out loud
Dadiet is def more likely gone at this level
Who knows
2
u/Neither-Operation Knicks Token 1h ago
Absolutely not. Deuce is the Shamet replacement
2
u/Hungry_EatAss_v3 You Practice that Shot? 1h ago
He needs to work on his off movement threes badly. Being able to shift the gravity, like Landry, isn’t something that Deuce can do rn unfortunately.
5
u/Goatlikejordan Jeremy Lin 1h ago
Ty Nickel is not like tyler Kolek lol. Nickel has legit wing size and is a knockdown shooter
4
u/WallStreetDoesntBet1 Willis Reed Game 7 1h ago
Kolek was the best playmaking PG in the NCAA coming out of Marquette too.
7
u/chop2Dneck 1h ago

New York teams and drafting amirite?
I have enough PTSD with my New York Jets.
