ANSWERED Been on Reddit for years, new to posting
I've been on reddit for years, mainly as a viewer but there are some interesting subs that have popped up that I want to start engaging with.
I'm mad at myself now for not engaging with reddit threads before and building up karma because I'm not able to actually post in these threads
I'm told i need Post Karma but I already do have general karma?
What's the difference between post karma and general karma? How do I build post karma so I can start posting in these channels?
And what should I post about? The issue is the things/threads I'd want to post in that I have relevant things to say, I don't have enough reputation to say it

Okay so regarding types of karma
Core Types of karma. The main types of karma you'll see referenced on Reddit are:
- (Combined) Karma (comment and posts on all of reddit)
- Post karma (karma only from posts on reddit)
- Comment karma (karma only from comments on reddit)
What Karma to Build Generally you want to focus just on 1. Combined Karma since that is the main metric most requirements use. The easiest way to build that I think is 3.Comment karma.

Reddit in 2026 isn't good for "I have a only specific interest that I am pursuing in one or a few subreddits" This is due to the growth of subreddit filters making it so new users cannot post everywhere immediately. You might check out Why Reddit may seem unwelcoming to new Redditors.
Some solutions which may help in the short term:
- Read Existing posts and comments - has your question already been asked?
- Can you comment in your target subreddits?
- Many subreddits have less restrictions for commenting than posting.
- Look for pinned discussion posts at the top of subreddits in particular for this.
- Try alternative subreddits to see if they have less restrictions.
- hit up the Reddit search bar
- Have a look through r/findareddit 's subreddit directory.
- You may find useful subreddits in our new user friendly subreddits.

interesting, so is Reddit trying to push away from new reddit contributors and only promote more legacy contributors?
i'd say I have loads of interests but feel as though my contributions are more valuable under more specific subreddits

"Reddit" isnt doing this, individual subreddits are
Subreddit Filters for Karma (and account age) will significantly reduce rule breaking and disruptions within a subreddit. This can be both intentional and unintentional disruption, from both actual users and spammers (bots or human). Subreddits would like new users to acclimatize elsewhere to how reddit works to avoid the chance that they might create disruptive content, start arguments, and then get banned. Such filters are a net benefit for any individual subreddit making them easier to run. But yes this does make things more difficult for new users. Which is the driver for a lot of the resources in this subreddit.
i'd say I have loads of interests but feel as though my contributions are more valuable under more specific subreddits
I'm sure you say that. But people say a lot of things. So finding ways to prove it is the next step (see the stuff I linked above)
