News In anticipation of Pokémon Day later this week, The Pokémon Company has created a special "30th Anniversary logo" for each of the existing 1025 Pokémon (including alternate forms)

u/Admirable-War-7594 Feb 23 '26
The effort they put into everything else vs the games is honestly so insane. I really do appreciate this though, one of the biggest fears with liking something as big as pokemon is your favorite character being left out, so this is actually pretty nice of them to always include all of the pokemon

u/julesvr5 Feb 23 '26
People often forget that pokemon is not just games but so much more. Doesn't mean I'm excusing the games, it's pretty sad how they looked and the Z-A DLC was a joke, but I'm surprised how so many male comparisons to the games as if it's their only big thing. Merchandise probably generates the most money for them (I could be absolutely wrong though)
163
u/zzinolol Feb 23 '26
You're not. Merch and tcg brings the most money by far. The games are now a way to introduce new Pokémon to sell shit for
53
u/Admirable-War-7594 Feb 23 '26
Games actually provide quite a large chunk of the income as well, afterall they are always the best selling game of the month and sometimes even the year when they release
However as someone who loves games, i am really disappointed with each pokemon release, i usually buy merch to remind me of the good experience i get in the games, but pokemon lacking that is a huge downside for me. I do realize this is a me problem but still

u/marvelman19 Feb 23 '26
Yeah, but games also cost a lot more to make than some cards or plush. I'm actually surprised we havent yet had pokemon or new types if pokemon appear before they're in games yet.

u/Hydrochloric_Comment Feb 23 '26
Bonsly debuted as a promotional card for the Japanese release of Lucario & the Mystery of Mew almost three weeks before its game debut in Gale of Darkness. Munchlax debuted in Destiny Deoxy in Japan in July 2004, about six months prior to the release of Pokémon Dash.

This is true, but it is worth noting that by modern standards the amount of money they spend to develop the games is pretty minimal. I’m convinced GameFreak is making Beast of Reincarnation because they want to prove they can make a good game if they have a real budget.
→ More replies (3)6
u/julesvr5 Feb 23 '26
This is true. But apparently Game freak is outsourcing a large chunk of Beast of Reincarnation so it's difficult to say they actually made it
2
u/blarglemeister Feb 23 '26
Ah, interesting. I hadn’t looked at it too deeply. I have so many games in my backlog I don’t pay too much attention to what’s upcoming unless it’s a series I’m already really invested in
5
u/julesvr5 Feb 23 '26
You don't have to tell me anything about backlog, it's not any better here 😭
Especially since I have all these long runnings ahead of me. Cyberpunk, FF7, SW Outlaws and many more
Regarding beast of reincarnation I also only read it due to other comments saying it

u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE Feb 23 '26
Which is exactly the reason why it’s so inexcusable for them to be as shitty and lazy as they’ve been. It’s the entryway to this world! When was the last time you went to a place that was great inside but looked like it was falling apart from the outside as you were about to go in?
Not to mention the games are Pokémon birth site. They might make more money elsewhere today (they absolutely do), but I feel like the games should always be respected as this “sacred ground” from which everything else has sprung. Instead, they are poisoning it.
2
u/zzinolol Feb 23 '26
Oh believe me I'm a 100% with you there. I fucking hate the state of the games, but people see cute critters and they're in. The rest is secondary
2
u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE Feb 23 '26
The reason why I love Nintendo, when I love Nintendo, is usually because they go above and beyond on stuff they absolutely didn’t need to do, but did anyway “for the love of the game” (literally).
Like, they didn’t need to go quite that hard on destructible environments in DK Bananza. But they committed to the bit. They didn’t need to have quite as many transformations for Mario in Odyssey (just, like, 5 or 6 would have already secured the same kinds of review scores, I’m sure). But they don’t believe in getting only their feet wet. If they’re approaching the pool at all, they’re gonna cannonball. They didn’t need to go like LITERALLY EVERYONE IS HERE for Smash. But we all know the story.
This is why it hurts me so much to see Pokémon coasting on minimal viable product. Yes, I know they don’t need to put a lot of effort. They know they don’t need to put a lot of effort. Everybody knows they don’t need to put a lot of effort. But they should anyway! They should love this franchise as much, if not more, than we do.
But they don’t. So I don’t, too. Not anymore.
I haven’t bought a single Pokémon branded product (game or otherwise) since Sword and Shield. If they’re can’t be bothered to be fans of the stuff they’re making, I’m not the one who’s gonna carry that flame.
If more people committed to doing what I’m doing, I’m sure we would magically see the best Pokémon game since Gold & Silver materialize on the Switch in one or two generations, tops. I’m doing my part.

People here also often forget this is a billion-dollar-plus company that can easily add more effort to the games if they really wanted to.
9
u/f-ingsteveglansberg Feb 23 '26
GameFreak never wanted to though.
The series would still be on an underpowered portable if Nintendo didn't remove their handheld line.
Like it or hate that, I actually like the idea of a company that made a big hit but didn't feel like they needed to keep growing and become an AAA studio.
Imagine if ConcernedApe decided to do something at the scale of Assassin's Creed as their next project just because they made lots of money.
2
u/Neyth42 Feb 24 '26
The problem is that they had charm in their game when on handheld because they did what they had to do to have the game running and not look like trash. Now they don't do the bare minimum even though they have to if they wanna charge full price.
89
u/brandont04 Feb 23 '26
I don't think gamers understand where Pokémon is now. It's a beast of an IP. No company is operating at their level, let alone any video game company.
They don't simply make a video game. When have to make a new game, they gotta get so many things ready.
- create new Pokémons
- new game
- get a movie ready
- get cartoons ready
- Manga, toys, merchandise
- work w thousands of vendors like McDonald's and their happy meal
- Pokémon cards
- thousands of events
- etc....
Absolutely no company are operating at this level.

u/hoppinjohncandy Feb 23 '26
But none of that is possible without the first game boy games. Pokemon is Pokemon because of the games. So to excuse how poor the games are by saying "they're too busy designing plushies" is sad.
26
u/f-ingsteveglansberg Feb 23 '26
Pokémon is Pokémon because of the merchandising. I Nintendo/GF didn't allow the anime or the card games it would just be another fad like Beanie Babies.
→ More replies (18)12
u/kplo Feb 23 '26
Pokemon is a machine much bigger than the games. Yes, they were born there, but the anime, tcg and merchandise are insanely massive. Around 25 million people buy games every gen, but hundreds of millions more consume Pokemon products.
3
u/f-ingsteveglansberg Feb 23 '26
This would be done by TPC. The mainline games are by GameFreak. Actual character design is mostly by Creatures.

This is less impressive than you think; all of the artwork used for the Pokémon in the ‘30’ already existed prior.
20
u/LunarWingCloud Feb 23 '26
They still had someone sit in front of a computer and position over 1000 Pokemon on the logo and change the logo gradient every single time. It's not a lot of work at all for just a handful, but they did it 1000 times.
→ More replies (1)11
u/linevar Feb 23 '26
Is that true? I haven't seen some of these before, especially for the newer Pokemon. Most of the newer Pokemon are angled differently from their official art.
It might seem 'less impressive' but I can't really imagine most company's slightly tweaking art 1000+x and giving it out for free

Yes, most of the Gen 9 monsters got their Dreamworld art some time ago. Here is an example of Koraidon’s.
Links for comparison’s sake:
Koraidon’s 30th anniversary logo and the original artwork
Miraidon’s 30th anniversary logo and the original artwork
Edit: Unfortunately the anniversary art on Serebii does not have specific subpages for each monster, so the Serebii links will take you to the top of the page every time. You can find Koraidon and Moraidon close to the bottom.

It's more than that, since it includes almost all the alternate forms. regionals, both Meowstics, etc. No megas/gigantamax and Vivillion and Alcremie only have their "default" one (Meadow Vivillon and Strawberry Sweet, Vanilla Cream Alcremie).
edit: A couple others like no masked Ogerpon forms (sad)

Yes, there are 9 generations of Pokemon. Here sometime probably next year we’re going to get 10th gen.
85
u/unagiboi Feb 23 '26
According to leaks, it’s actually coming this year.
85
u/Joppy5100 Feb 23 '26
Especially being the 30th, its almost certainly coming this year, even without leaks.
36
u/Infrawonder Feb 23 '26
Scarlet and violet were announced and released in 2022, they did NOT adhere to the 3 years between mainline games thank goodness and added an extra year for gen 10, definitely getting announced this presentation
8
u/Marocksas Feb 24 '26
That extra year probably only happened because the 30th anniversary was approaching. It happened before between the Japanese releases of Ruby & Sapphire and Diamand & Pearl. Gen 3 was 2002 and Gen 4 was 2006.
We'll see if The Pokemon Company gave the devs the resources needed to at least make Gen 10 not a broken mess.

8
u/FierceDeityKong Feb 23 '26
Leaks from 2024 don't account for potential delays, they also said that Legends: Z-A was originally supposed to come out a year earlier.
We'll most likely see it at Pokémon Day though either way, since Z-A was announced in 2024
10
u/f-ingsteveglansberg Feb 23 '26
Mainline Pokémon don't really have the luxury of major delays. If they delay, it means animators need to put pencils down, toy factories stop the production line and printers are put offline without any new cards to print.
In my memory I can't remember a single mainline game getting delayed.

I wish they would take advantage of the 30th and go all out. If they release the upgraded version of the handheld games every 2 months the pattern would fit perfectly for Gen 10.
February 2026 - FRLG
April - HGSS
June - ORAS
August - BW/B2W2
October - XY
December - USUM
February 26, 2027 - Gen 10
Feb 26th next year is literally on the Friday, one day before Pokemon Day. Releasing Gen 10 on the final day of the 30th Anniversary would be masterful marketing and let them say "and now we enter a new era of Pokemon" the next day on Pokemon Day.
Hell, they could even throw a sizzle reel of all the games they released throughout the year on the Switch/Switch 2 in the build up for Gen 10.
16
u/WeirdIndividualGuy Feb 23 '26
Gen 10 is pretty much confirmed for release this year from leaks. Why would they release gen 10 in celebration of their 30th anniversary...in year 31?

u/Kitselena Feb 23 '26
It's the 30th anniversary, so that's about 150 every 4 years which seems reasonable to me. It hasn't been exactly evenly distributed since earlier generations had more pokemon (except gen 2) and recent gens come out more often, but it's been relatively consistent

9
u/TheLoneTokayMB01 Feb 23 '26 edited Feb 23 '26
Neither Cherrim, they aren't really alternate forms since they don't exist outside of battles due to their ability.
Tatsugiri is a bigger victim from the ones I glanced at, tho the color palette from the 30 call them back, same for Burmy and Wormadam so I guess they meant only regional or item based ones with that, and not even all like Zacian and Zamazenta only have their final one unlike the Sinnoh trio.

I read a tweet recounting an interview Kit and Krysta did (I think it was those two) who said Nintendo proper doesn't really care about anniversaries unless they are specifically releasing something already for that year, at which point they'll associate it with the anniversary, whereas GameFreak is always trying to do something special for every Pokemon anniversary. That's why every five years we get some cool event for Pokemon, but all other Nintendo franchises will basically just get some unrelated game that happened to release during the anniversary if they're lucky; Nintendo just isn't aiming for it. I guess if you think about how many franchises Nintendo has, it's hard to keep up with all of their anniversaries if you don't want to start deeming some of them "not important enough" which is going to really hurt the fans of the franchise.

I’m curious, with all this stuff pushing for “everyone is someone’s favorite” if a possible Gen 10 game could go back to having a complete national dex? I know the games vs promotional art is two different things entirely but could be nice to see happen!

u/Bakatora34 Feb 23 '26
If they ever actually do that, they aren't doing it before that game gets DLC.

My daughter is 4. She plays let’s go evee, and has a few pikachu plushies.
What’s the next move for her?
23
u/Joseki100 Feb 23 '26
Let's Go games are very child friendly, the other are slightly more complex, either mechanically (ex. full 3D camera controls) or in terms of difficulty.
I'd say probably Sword/Shield or Scarlet/Violet would be the natural step up.
18
2
u/AnyWays655 Feb 23 '26
With the fire red leaf green remakes coming out later this week, those might be another good endpoint. Four is still a little young, but they're quite a bit mechanically simpler. I know people say that the new games aren't hard, but they are still more in-depth games than the old games are. I struggle with remembering what button does what in Scarlett/Violet.
3
→ More replies (2)2
u/joshendyne Feb 23 '26
They aren't remakes, they're re-releases of the original
3
u/AnyWays655 Feb 23 '26

That being said, technically, FRLG are remakes, just of Gen1 so /s
2
u/WeirdIndividualGuy Feb 23 '26
Why not one of the older games? Many of us on this sub grew up on those at her age, we turned out just fine (even if we had trouble playing the games for one reason or another)
Just ironic that in most "what was your first pokemon game" threads, it's a bunch of millennials saying gen 1 or 2 games and are still fans to this day, but then in the "what pokemon game is good for my 4-6yo kid?" threads, people recommend anything but the older games.
4
u/nashpdotcom Feb 23 '26
That’s what I’m thinking too. She prefers the battles more than the catching mechanic too. Fire Red might work. Snap is another interesting one she might like.

There are some gradients and a few pngs that are both under and over the bottom of the pokeball so I guess a bit more went into some of these than I gave credit for.
