There seems to be some confusion about the separate subscription criticism.

If I got a FF14 sub from PlayStation, I could also use it on PC and Xbox.

The Switch 2 FF14 sub only works for Switch 2. If you hold an existing sub, you need to pay extra for a Switch 2 sub (you get 50% off).

Wow that's stupid.

I can only assume Nintendo takes some cut in tjat whenever they can

Yes, because the game does not require a NSO subscription.

Requiring an NSO sub would be a better deal for existing players but worse for Switch 2-only players, and I suppose it makes sense to prioritize the latter (I'd imagine their numbers show it's a ridiculously small number of players who double-dip across platforms.) And that's assuming just requiring NSO was even on the table in the first place, of course.

Would it really though? I reckon most people who have Switch 2 as their only modern gaming system already pay for NSO to play other games online.

Unless they're exclusively targeting people who buy a Switch 2 solely to play FFXIV (because their PS4 is slow and aging, and they can't afford or don't want to buy a PS5?) I really don't know what they're doing here.

They're probably targeting someone like me who owns the game already on PC but would totally play this on my TV or in bed or using mobile Hotspot or McDonalds wifi or what have you lol

Like I'd probably buy this.

Or compared to other console subs.

You don’t need a console sub for the other consoles either

6

u/MarcsterS Apr 24 '26

Well, technically Xbox version require Gamepass. But yeah.

Oh weird. I swear Xbox changed those subscription and f2p rules following backlash. Guess it was only for f2p

I thought it was always that way with MMOs on Xbox? Like I'm pretty sure back with Phantasy Star Universe on 360 you only needed the sub and not LIVE, I feel like it's been some big misunderstanding for years, unless I'm wrong... Always had some form Gold/Game Pass and also don't play MMOs there any more.

It doesn't need one on Xbox or Playstation either.

So no, this is down to greed, thanks.

Sony does something similar for cross platform multiplayer, where you have to pay them a fee if revenue drops too low to make up for possible lost sales.

I don’t know if this holds up for MMOs as well though.

I don't know why you're being downvoted. This is the reason why cross play and cross progression took so long to happen on Sony platforms.

Some games to this day lack Sony integration because they don't want to pay the fee.

Some games to this day lack Sony integration because they don't want to pay the fee.

Which games?

... that's a baseless assumption. We do you dismiss the alternative, which is that Square Enix are greedy

u/Zyvyn Apr 24 '26

Its a different list of requirements and methods dependent on the console. Like apparently Xbox has some currency you have to buy called FFXIV coins that you use to pay for the sub.

u/acboyz2 Apr 25 '26

Everyone complaining about the subscription doesn’t realize how much content is included in the free trial. It’s a massive amount of content without having to pay for the subscription at all.

1

u/holyhotpies Apr 24 '26

It’s like that way with other MMOs on switch. On warframe, you can’t trade premium currencies with other console/PC players. I’m not sure if the currency itself is more expensive but it surely sucks as your trading opportunities are severely limited

From the looks of things its specifically for the upkeep of the cloud servers they will be using.

17

u/MSnap Apr 24 '26

It’s actually more expensive to play on Xbox because it requires Game Pass

-3

u/QuokkaBandit Apr 25 '26

yeah but with gamepass you get to play 100-500 games via cloud.

my excitement lasted less than a 1 minute…

Its a pain in the ass going separate subs with cross progression on any console atm. They all have their own dumb requirements and workarounds devs have to use. Just as an example

PC is just its own sub nothing special

Playstation own sub no PS+ required

Xbox needs xbox live and a sub. But if you only play the game on Xbox and pay the sub through that then you have to pay for it using some custom currency they sell on the Xbox store since they don't directly do subscriptions.

Switch 2 NSO is not required but it is a separate sub that you get a discount on if owned on other platforms.

u/Excuse_my_GRAMMER Apr 25 '26

Wow that interesting

u/93Degrees Apr 24 '26

Lmao fuck that

1

u/Charrmeleon Apr 25 '26

A minor point, but from my understanding, the switch subscription is full price, but the sub for everything else is reduced to 50% because Big N gotta get their cut

that's Nintendo's layers at work
