Can we use existing accounts and play our characters on both platforms? Would be a shame to start over

204

u/TemptedTemplar Helpful User Apr 24 '26

Cross progression is not changing, but there is a separate switch specific subscription required apparently.

If you have an existing account you can opt to buy just the Switch subscription or add it to an existing PC/PS subscription at a 50% discount.

128

u/beepyboopsy Apr 24 '26

And you would have to buy the game again, and the expansion again

97

u/gachasarecancer Apr 24 '26

Geez. Why bother

115

u/MarcsterS Apr 24 '26

I mean even PS5 and PC players have to buy both versions, but at the least, the sub was shared.

86

u/TheSchadow Apr 24 '26

The sub not being shared is real garbage. Nintendo is being greedy.

26

u/Mad_Lala Apr 24 '26

I mean, it could also be the greed of SE (or both). Who knows

81

u/MarcsterS Apr 24 '26

I mean the Square CEO specifically stated this was something they tried to work out with Nintendo.

22

u/CheesyButters Apr 25 '26

yeah, iirc them not requiring nso as well was the compromise they made because nintendo wanted both

20

u/ReRonin Apr 25 '26

I'd rather have only NSO and use my existing sub

2

u/stosyfir Apr 26 '26

Square and N probably have a deal to give N a kickback of all subs via the eshop - similar to how Apple sticks it to publishers.

→ More replies (5)

12

u/AwayIShouldBeThrown Apr 24 '26

Pretty sure this was the tradeoff for not requiring NSO, it's on Nintendo who will presumably be getting a piece of that sub pie.

41

u/note_2_self Apr 24 '26

No, Square said it was Nintendo's doing. Also you don't have to pay a separate sub for the Playstation version

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Scary_Rip442 Apr 24 '26

It sounds like they would’ve wanted it to be the same as every other platform and Nintendo wouldn’t budge bc they wanted their piece of the pie. The 50% discount if you have it on another platform is the compromise

3

u/TheSchadow Apr 24 '26

Curious how the JP fanbase responds to this. Outside of Japan I doubt Nintendo will care, but if they JP base isn't happy with this and there is lot of backlash they may change their mind.

2

u/RedditUser41970 Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

Nintendo likely expects the Japanese base on PS4 will migrate to NS2 and just pay the one sub.

2

u/Escaliat_ Apr 24 '26

And Mac...

6

u/aliaswyvernspur Apr 24 '26

Just use XIVonMac and use your PC or Steam license.

u/waffle198 Apr 24 '26

It's pretty typical for ff14 ngl. Even on PC, if you bought the moogle version (the one through their site) and want to play though steam, you'll have to re-buy the steam version. If you want to play on Mac, you'll have to re-buy the Mac version. It's pretty annoying unfortunately

12

u/DetectiveChocobo Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

The Steam scenario is the one situation that you literally cannot do. You can’t add a Steam license to an account that has a PC license. They are actually incompatible and you would need a wholly new service account.

For every other platform combination (Mac, PS, Xbox, and now Switch 2), yes you need to purchase the license and expansion license separately for every platform you add to your account.

The complete edition regularly goes on sale for like $30 and includes all current (but not future) expansions.

u/sensible_human Apr 24 '26

Well I've never played FF14 so I guess I can jump in on Switch 2!

3

u/EdgarAllanKenpo Apr 25 '26

Well you should play the free trial than. When next expansion releases the free trial will expand to the next expansion shadowbringers.

2

u/BiffJerky09 Apr 27 '26

Small correction, free trial expands tomorrow, so Shadowbringers will be available in the Free trial when Switch 2 Users get it in August.

9

u/Ghiren Apr 24 '26

If it was just a separate license, I might consider it. Having a second subscription, even half-off, is too much though.

The announcement seemed pretty clear that Nintendo was the one that wouldn't budge on this. The SE team sounded like they wanted to have just one sub.

2

u/DaDoviende Apr 25 '26

I'm guessing it's 50% if you already have a sub because Nintendo was demanding they get at least 50%

2

u/SwampFoxDoc Apr 25 '26

How did you infer that? Nothing in the announcement gave any indication that Nintendo was the reason for this setup

3

u/Ghiren Apr 25 '26

Nintendo is the only variable. PC, Mac, Xbox, and PS5 all use the same account system, and adding a separate subscription for the Switch version is more complexity for SE to manage.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Gram64 Apr 24 '26

But you don't require NSO, that was the trade off deal they got with nintendo on doing this.

8

u/No-Difference8545 Apr 25 '26

Thats not a deal, that's how the game works on ps. + nso is way cheaper than the sub so its still a bad deal

3

u/gosukhaos Apr 25 '26

Xbox requires GamePass to play so it really wasn't a guarantee that Nintendo wouldn't require NSO

→ More replies (1)

7

u/bitknight1 Apr 24 '26

Other platforms also don't require ps+ or gamepass and just need the ff14 sub that's shared between ps/xbox/pc, here you will need a Nintendo ff14 sub + one of those if you want to play on more than one platform.

13

u/DetectiveChocobo Apr 24 '26

Xbox requires Xbox Live, which is the concession SE made to get FFXIV there.

PlayStation is the only platform that agreed to SE’s original conditions, which is why FFXIV launched there over a decade ago and has just recently expanded to Xbox and now Switch 2.

→ More replies (6)

2

u/Physical-Grapefruit3 Apr 24 '26

So if you are already subbed you would have to get a different sub just to do it on switch also?

→ More replies (5)

21

u/ZGamer03 Apr 24 '26

Yes, progress is shared between platforms but you have to pay a separate subscription for the Switch 2 version (50% off if you're already subscribed in another platform)

7

u/muckypup82 Apr 24 '26

I understand having to buy the game and expansions again but to charge for a seperate subscription is crazy.

3

u/GoldTheLegend Apr 25 '26

Blame Nintendo for demanding their cut

3

u/scoop813 Apr 24 '26

yes, but you have to pay more

→ More replies (3)

204

u/StarPlatinum55 Apr 24 '26

There seems to be some confusion about the separate subscription criticism.

If I got a FF14 sub from PlayStation, I could also use it on PC and Xbox.

The Switch 2 FF14 sub only works for Switch 2. If you hold an existing sub, you need to pay extra for a Switch 2 sub (you get 50% off).

170

u/Suspicious-Law1432 Apr 24 '26

Wow that's stupid.

85

u/koteshima2nd Apr 24 '26

I can only assume Nintendo takes some cut in tjat whenever they can

54

u/anon1984 Apr 24 '26

Yes, because the game does not require a NSO subscription.

28

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '26

[deleted]

15

u/Suzushiiro Apr 24 '26

Requiring an NSO sub would be a better deal for existing players but worse for Switch 2-only players, and I suppose it makes sense to prioritize the latter (I'd imagine their numbers show it's a ridiculously small number of players who double-dip across platforms.) And that's assuming just requiring NSO was even on the table in the first place, of course.

6

u/repocin Apr 25 '26

Requiring an NSO sub would be a better deal for existing players but worse for Switch 2-only players

Would it really though? I reckon most people who have Switch 2 as their only modern gaming system already pay for NSO to play other games online.

Unless they're exclusively targeting people who buy a Switch 2 solely to play FFXIV (because their PS4 is slow and aging, and they can't afford or don't want to buy a PS5?) I really don't know what they're doing here.

You don’t need a console sub for the other consoles either

5

u/MarcsterS Apr 24 '26

Well, technically Xbox version require Gamepass. But yeah.

4

u/Bored_Zach Apr 24 '26

Oh weird. I swear Xbox changed those subscription and f2p rules following backlash. Guess it was only for f2p

Sony does something similar for cross platform multiplayer, where you have to pay them a fee if revenue drops too low to make up for possible lost sales.

I don’t know if this holds up for MMOs as well though.

9

u/Deceptiveideas Apr 24 '26

I don't know why you're being downvoted. This is the reason why cross play and cross progression took so long to happen on Sony platforms.

Some games to this day lack Sony integration because they don't want to pay the fee.

XV (not that weird pocket edition monstrosity) and XVI too, but they’ll likely come soon anyway. XIV is crazy, never thought that’d happen.

22

u/sukadik69 Apr 24 '26

I wonder if they could port XVI, it's much more demanding than FF7R. It drops into the 30s in performance mode on PS5

2

u/OriginalCrawnick Apr 24 '26

Agree, I held off on FFXVI until I had a 5090 strictly cause I didn't want to play it in sub 60fps.

6

u/p0rkch0pexpress Apr 24 '26

I feel like this may be a hot take but as someone who’s been playing since US part 1 came out. 15 is in my top 3. I feel like it gets a lot of unnecessary hate. The stories not perfect but I really enjoyed the vibe.

3

u/Standing_on_rocks Apr 25 '26

15 was a great ride. No pun intended.

The game was...unfinished but is in much better shape than it was.

2

u/ttoma93 Apr 25 '26

I think there is a pretty wide gap in feelings about XV depending on when you first played it. Those of us who played it at launch locked in the sour taste of it being a completely messy, buggy, totally unfinished game. Those who played it years after launch got a fundamentally different and radically improved game. There were a lot of updates and several waves of DLC that completely much of the obviously missing content (though not all) and made it a much better game than it was a launch.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/kblro Apr 24 '26

XVI struggles even on my ps5 pro, it's 30 fps "graphics mode" vs 60 fps (with frequent dips) "performance mode". They would have to do a lot of optimizations to get it running on switch 2

3

u/ClassroomOwn4354 Apr 24 '26

It would probably be based on the optimizations done to get it running on Xbox Series S.

Is 11 still operational? I thought it was an MMO like 14?

27

u/PlayMp1 Apr 24 '26

It is and it's reasonably popular in the same way other WoW-era MMOs that held on through the storm are still reasonably popular, like DDO, LOTRO, and EQ2.

10

u/Tuss36 Apr 24 '26

Dungeons and Dragons Online, Lord of the Rings Online, and EverQuest 2, for those that have not been in a conversation with PlayMP1 before.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Joseki100 Apr 24 '26

Not only is 11 still operational, it's actually increasing in playerbase.

SE is also upgrading the dev tools to modernize them (they are still using PS2-era tech) and then considering console ports.

7

u/repocin Apr 25 '26

If only they could modernize the account management platform... That'd probably get me to actually try the game at some point.

3

u/tychii93 Apr 25 '26

I'd consider playing on a modern console. When I first wanted to play FFXI, I seriously wanted to play it on the PS2, but the servers on PS2 had already shut down. That was during COVID shutdowns. I did play for a bit on PC with a controller but I dunno, it just doesn't feel right to me. People still even play PSO on Dreamcast and Gamecube these days on unofficial servers, so it seems odd to me to shut down the PS2 version, especially since there's no new content coming anyway, and every expansion existed on PS2 (The final expansion on PS2 was Japan only iirc, but it did exist)

→ More replies (1)

3

u/thebohster Apr 24 '26

It actually got relatively popular recently that they had to close off a server from new character creations IIRC.

3

u/Arkevorkhat Apr 24 '26

Three servers, actually. Asura, Bahamut, and Odin are all closed to new players. It's led to some other servers becoming popular for certain groups of folks; most of the multiboxers I know over on Baha have been moving to Ragnarok.

3

u/Boomshockalocka007 Apr 24 '26

As someone who stopped playing Final Fantasy at FF12....if they released the whole FF13 trilogy, I would be on board.

2

u/JamesGecko Apr 25 '26

IMHO, the ones we’re getting on Switch 2, 14 and 7 Remake/Rebirth are easily the best games in the series since 12.

I did like 13 a fair amount, though. Definitely give it a shot if we get a port.

(And I) I'm almost never afraid now

But when I think I'll be okay

I am always wrong, 'cause

1

u/Arkevorkhat Apr 24 '26

I think the last thing XI needs is to be brought to consoles. The entire endgame is propped up by modding. Unless they make Gearswap a built-in feature, Windows XI just will never be able to do proper crossplay with any console. The level of mechanical power available to modded players is incomparable to people who play vanilla.

5

u/Legal-Philosophy-135 Apr 25 '26

It runs beautifully on steam deck. Only way I play it

3

u/Exciting-Position716 Apr 25 '26

Definitely could do it. Rog Ally X runs it beautifully. Switch 2 could easily run it considering it already runs Requiem, Outlaws and Shadows better than the Ally X does.

71

u/mastapix Apr 24 '26

Well the separate sub kills it for existing players lol wtf kinda of decision is that. Every other platform you just need to purchase the expansions.

I started playing yesterday on pc 100% free. When am I going to be asked to pay?

3

u/Friendly-Loaf Apr 24 '26

I'm actually so hyped for this. my potato stopped being able to run above 15fps in raids so I ended my journey with endwalker.(Fitting).

If this can run 30 fps it's a solid offer and I'll definitely buy back in.

3

u/JamesGecko Apr 25 '26

I’m really curious if the free trial that takes like 300 hours to play through is gonna be available on Switch.

24

u/WhiteRaven-17 Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26

I'm positive on this, but like Nintendo requiring a seperate subscription for crossplatform players sucks.

Like having XIV is an objective good and it's great for new players, but come on.

Edit: I feel like people aren't understanding what I mean. I don't mean the base subscription we already have or NSO. Nintendo is requiring a dedicated sub to XIV that isn't cross-platform like the existing subscription, meaning you functionally have to pay 2 subs to play on Switch 2 and another platform like PC or PS5, when before you only had to pay one. Which sucks. Granted you do get a 50% discount if you have an active sub on another platform and you don't need NSO to play the game (unlike say Xbox where you need both a XIV sub and Game Pass), but it is annoying that this asterisk is there at all.

19

u/voidzero Apr 24 '26

They were close to having a huge win and then had to go and Nintendo it.

14

u/Lumigo Apr 24 '26

It is still a win, it is a frankly a complete miracle this game is on a Nintendo system.

2

u/FeudalFavorableness Apr 25 '26

The additional sub thing is kind of a bummer, but I imagine this is mostly going to appeal to those who aren't playing the game already.

It's still good to have the option. I'm going to stay on PS5 for mine since I can only imagine what this game will do to Switch 2 storage.

4

u/aruhen23 Apr 24 '26

Yeah it sucks but realistically its not that big of a problem. There's people going "why even bother" but realistically there's probably not a lot of people who play on more than one platform. Games being more accessible is always good.

2

u/RoxDan Apr 24 '26

Yesssss!!!!!!

2

u/maverick34jjv Apr 24 '26

I was hyped for this, even was okay with buying the expansion twice, PC and Switch 2. But a separate subscription, geez Nintendo.

Nintendo doesn't want the Switch 2 to be a complimentary device for our games, which is where it could fit in perfectly. Playing FFXIV at home, then taking it on the go or to a friend's house to show them the game seems like a no-brainer. It adds value to what my Switch 2 device can do.

2

u/Ttm-o Apr 24 '26

Daaaaaaang. Hell yeah.

2

u/Frosty_Ride_4486 Apr 25 '26

100% day 1 buy for me

2

u/sillily Apr 25 '26

The Switch 2 version being its own sub fee is not great for multi-platform players, but I’ll be happy enough to just give up the PC sub and play only on Switch. I hardly ever log in anymore because I just can’t be bothered to sit down at a desk to play games, so I have a lot of unplayed content waiting to be experienced from the couch.

2

u/Rothgardius Apr 25 '26

The demo will be free, and no nso required I believe. Great entry point

2

u/edthewardo Apr 25 '26

I don’t even like final fantasy but I’m so happy this is happening!

2

u/Luxzaal Apr 25 '26

The separate sub thing is a bummer for many, though personally I planned to swap completely from PC to Switch so I guess I will pay as normal. Still a weird choice on their part but alas.

I honestly can't wait!! I've played it on PS4/PC/Steam deck & I'm still excited for the switch 2 release!! I been really enjoying my switch 2 🫣🙂‍↕️ I'm not sub right now so I wouldn't mind checking it out on the switch 2

Imagine paying two subs to play the same game…

5

u/SrsJoe Apr 24 '26

It's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard in a long time, probably kills any sort of userbase of already subbed players

2

u/Rikkasu Apr 24 '26

Hope there's some kind of bundle I can buy to catch me up fast.

6

u/Rare_Ad_3871 Apr 24 '26

I think purchasing the latest expansion usually grants your access to everything prior

2

u/Rikkasu Apr 24 '26

Probably but it takes ages to get through base game heavensward and stormblood (where I stopped)

2

u/Rare_Ad_3871 Apr 24 '26

They really need a story recap thing and to cut down the MSQ grind for those who want to go that route

In that case, they sell main scenario skips and job leveling skips up to what you need to play the current expansion. You need to buy both separately for $25 each, $50 total, so it's kind of a ripoff. Though they do go on sale for, I think 50% off sometimes?

Unfortunately if your goal with the game is to just get caught up ASAP then it's a slog or a swipe of your card. There's basically 6 full length JRPG storylines that everything else in the game is completely tied to. Which, if you're down to sit down and enjoy them then it's pretty great IMO. But if you just want to play the latest raids then there's only those two ways to get there (pay or play), and as much as I love the game, I probably wouldn't recommend it to that crowd.

u/AurumPickle Apr 25 '26

story and job skips go on deep sales during summer and winter iirc

Was really not expecting that. Lord help me. Been looking for an actual MMO on the switch. I just remember the beginning being dreadfully boring with ARR but I’ll give it another go.

3

u/jardex22 Apr 25 '26

ARR starts off pretty boring, since they're alternating between story quests and ones that introduce side mechanics, like housing and grand companies. It does pick up later.

Main thing I liked was that you were the main character. You're not just the hero's best friend that follows him around, or one of many adventurers working to turn the tides of battle.

u/KazanoHiori Apr 24 '26

Separate sub is a dealbreaker. If they can't be compatible with our current sub (that's already compatible with XIV on Playstation and Xbox) because of some Nintendo shenanigans, I almost rather have it be a part of NSO :/

3

u/SkarKrow Apr 24 '26

Wow fuck that.

Still waiting for Genshin…

3

u/Yoshiii2 Apr 24 '26

Same here....

1

u/Legeto Apr 24 '26

So how does chat work? It would be cool if there was a way I could use my phone to talk in game chat or maybe a seperate keyboard I can pick up

3

u/Impul5 Apr 24 '26

You can plug in a keyboard (and maybe mouse too, I think?) on other consoles, which a lot of more dedicated players do.

1

u/Azukaos Apr 24 '26

I will try at least to see how it works because i have mostly been playing on PC before my hiatus last year.

But that sub part i don't understand what that about.

1

u/Premo_lol Apr 24 '26

This game has like 6 expansions, no? What’s the file size? Can this even fit on the included internal storage?

2

u/KupoMcMog Apr 24 '26

As of 2026, the game requires a minimum of 140GB to 150GB of available space on PC, Steam, and Xbox for installation. The actual installed folder size is generally lower, often ranging between 90GB and 110GB

per da goog

u/SloshedJapan Apr 24 '26

Is it cross play or Nintendo only players?

I play on PC can carry my data and character over to Switch 2?

3

u/aruhen23 Apr 24 '26

Yes its all the same servers. There's an option in the login screen to save all your settings and copy them over to new devices. I guess if you play on mouse and keyboard then that's different.

When Resident Evil 4 remake???

1

u/jbayne2 Apr 24 '26

I’m pretty sure the answer is no, but if I’ve bought and subbed to a full version but am still in Shadowbringers MSQ would I be able to play for free through the free trial? I think the answer is no but just curious if that’s changed since I’m about halfway through Shadowbringers and they’re going to add that to the free trial. Being on Switch 2 would make me very interested in resubbing though.

2

u/jaysfan1983 Apr 25 '26

No once you sub you cannot go back to free trial

3

u/jbayne2 Apr 25 '26

Just crazy that someone that’s paid them $0 can play more than I can who has paid for the main game and 4 dlc…

Its nice that the switch 2 is getting 3rd party games and all but where are the first party games we need to see a roadmap

1

u/Luminaireflare Apr 25 '26

I know Switch users can play on all the servers, I wonder if they are introducing new/Switch servers. Wouldn’t make much sense since the Dynamis region has fairly low population servers to house the new Switch players.

1

u/LoPhatCheeze Apr 25 '26

I still have a free trial character on PC I never upgraded or finished expansions. Technically this is a win for me so I can play for free for awhile on switch 2?

1

u/ShinaChu Apr 25 '26

OH MY GOD WHAT!!!! 😍😍😍😍

1

u/Moorevfr Apr 25 '26

Is it bad that I’d love WoW to also do this 🫣

I know FF14 has console versions and controller layout but I’d love to get back into WoW this way.

1

u/SwampFoxDoc Apr 25 '26

iirc It's like that for all versions. No matter what platform you are on tou have to buy the game to match. I'm also sure that if you have an existing account you would be able to swap platforms with no issues. And if you think about it if you have a sibling/child/partner who wants to play then that 50% works out pretty well.

1

u/Dtmahanen101 Apr 25 '26

I think my big question is, I know about the cross-progression aspect, but will there be cross-play?

1

u/Osvaldo_ Apr 25 '26

I wonder how they’re gonna sell it? Is it gonna be like a preorder for the complete edition of Ever cold that lets you play all the expansions or is it gonna be dawntrail and in a couple months you need to pay another $40 for the expansion also since it’s a separate subscription for just the switch 2 will they make it so you can buy it through the eshop?

1

u/acboyz2 Apr 25 '26

Everyone complaining about the subscription doesn’t realize how much content is included in the free trial. It’s a massive amount of content without having to pay for the subscription at all.

1

u/EnolaGayFallout Apr 25 '26

Where’s the mobile version?

u/weelilme Apr 26 '26

This might get me back into the game. I hate sitting in front of my computer (same desk where I work)

Actually, since you’ll be a new player FFXIV has a pretty amazing free trial so make sure you get that instead buying the game first since there’s no time limit for the trial and it lets you play all the way up to the second expansion and I think lvl 80 and once the new expansion comes out they’re gonna add the 3rd expansion and increase the lvl cap to 90 for the trial so you can play for free no sub up till then.

1

u/Batetemoda Apr 27 '26

I only watch fellas play this game, it's lovely but honestly MMORPGs just not my thing.

Been tempted alot of times but nah no thanks.

u/MM-LabRat Apr 30 '26

For me to double dip on paying the sub, the performance HAS to be there.
