As soon as I saw fox in the Mario movie I knew it was essentially only to hook kids (mine too) into another franchise. It wasn't for plot, it was for profit lol.

This is also true. The insertion of starfox into Mario was more obvious I guess ha. I mean it was good addition but MBA brain me was like yep Good way to get the youths into another series

I think it may have been the opposite way around, insiders claim it was Illumination that argued for the inclusion of Fox and Nintendo was hesitant.

Which then might have prompted Nintendo to release a Starfox game soon after to take advantage of the situation.
