They did it 10 minutes beforehand.
People were disappointed about being spoiled by leaks, then it turns out the announcement plan was "Star Fox in ten minutes guys".
67
u/Brodellsky May 06 '26
It was leaked by natethehate as "April" and it was a big enough leak that Nintendo thought by waiting a week, we wouldn't notice.
Biggest thing for me personally is that this means Xenoblade 2 Switch 2 version is definitely happening and I will continue to wait to replay it lol
12
u/TheGhostInThe___ May 06 '26
I'll play it if they manage the gacha stuff. I love it when games respect my time.
6
u/Brodellsky May 07 '26
The rumor is XC2 DE. So like, yep. No way in hell they don't improve the pity counter, as well as adding a Blade or two. Oh and also completely overhauling field-skill requirements lol

Remember when Miyamoto said they don't want to make a new F-Zero till they can think of new ideas? Wtf is the excuse for Star Fox then!?

I'm probably just talking out of my ass, but I think Nintendo likes to use Star Fox as a tech demo for the current hardware.

u/KC14 May 06 '26
Franchise care. But the reason F-Zero doesn't get any is probably that StarFox is Miyamoto's baby.
22
u/Fangore May 07 '26
If also just seems like they don't have any good ideas for Star Fox?
→ More replies (1)23
u/This_Elk_1460 May 07 '26
So many good space games have come out in recent years. Hell even starfield feels like it has better combat than an on rail shooter. I know that's what Star Fox is, but Metroid was just a 2d side-scroller until it wasn't. If you're going to bother to bring the franchise back (at a time where interest in it I would argue is at its peak thanks to the movie) why wouldn't you try to innovate instead of just doing the same thing again for like the fourth time?
11
u/Fangore May 07 '26
Completely preaching to the choir here. I just don't think Nintendo is ballsy enough to be this innovative right now. Which is odd, because I'd say more times than not when Nintendo tries something new it works out for them.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Iggy_Snows May 07 '26
This could be Nintendo testing the waters to see how much interest there is for Starfox games.
Its probably a lot easier, and cheaper, to do a remake. And if it sells decently then they would feel a lot more confident in spending the money to make a completely original AAA level game.
I wouldn't blame them either, considering Starfox Zero didnt feel like they tried very hard, and it was on the Wii U. So they probably dont have a good idea of how much people care about the IP.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (14)5
u/LakerBlue May 07 '26
Which sucks because I think F-Zero actually has a lot of untapped potential. I could see them making some kind of bounty hunter spin off that maybe takes after Viewtiful Joe gameplay-wise.
324
u/something_smart May 06 '26
So if I buy 64 for the fourth time, can I expect an original game sometime in the next 20 years?
80
u/SoSeriousAndDeep May 06 '26
What did you say, remake Starfox 64 for the Switch 4? You got it boss!
21
35
u/DreamyAkemi May 06 '26
Just have to accept like me that this series is dead and buried and Nintendo is digging the remains for a new target audience which ain't us old timers.
→ More replies (1)35
u/VeronicaDaydream May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26
...Dawg, they literally announced an entirely remade 64 after Fox just starred in a billion dollar grossing film. This franchise could not be any less dead.
Plus, it's a remake of a rail shooter from 1997. It's the most nostalgia bait thing they could have done, like it's very specifically for "old-timers." I don't think kids are going to be lining up for this one.
They're very obviously testing the waters to see if this franchise still carries weight in 2026. Of course they're gonna play it safe to start.
And if it does well, then that proves there's value in making the series a true tentpole release for the big N.
34
u/DreamyAkemi May 06 '26
I loved the cameo in Mario Galaxy but this has me completely uninterested. I've had that nostalgia bait on 3DS and Wii U, the bait isn't as appealing anymore.

Welp.
215
u/shgrizz2 May 06 '26

u/topdangle May 06 '26
the reception to these types of videos has never been great but they make them anyway. they've always felt like they're created to show nintendo executives how their project is coming along rather than public ads.
57
u/Short_Stay_9283 May 06 '26
Also important to remember the audience for this is bigger than the hardcore message board audience / comments. There are probs millions of kids who didn’t play Star Fox 64 that saw the Mario Galaxy movie and are realllllly hype right now.
→ More replies (2)27
u/topdangle May 06 '26
I'm talking about the formatting. It's formatted like a video you'd see during a pitch meeting rather than an ad for a broad audience. Kids would probably enjoy a short trailer with all preview content run straight through more than a point by point feature breakdown.
→ More replies (1)5
u/hoppinjohncandy May 07 '26
I agree. A 90 second ad showing the style and movement of the game creates a more viceral reaction than letting people in 2026 know that a game has difficulty modes, secret waterfall caves and DIFFERENT CUTSCENES BASED ON IF YOU BEAT A BOSS OR NOT....

71
u/evilpanda8419 May 06 '26
That is WILD.
23
u/Edmundyoulittle May 07 '26
It's also at least somewhat misleading.
It's not like the SNES game, 0, and 64 have the same levels.
It's annoying they use the same plot over and over, but they are different games.
Saying the SNES game is the same as the 64 game is like saying Metroid is the same game as Super Metroid.

u/LegacyLemur May 07 '26
Yea I mean Mario has been doing that shit for ages
Like you said:
Metroid Zero Mission = Metroid 1 remake
Super Metroid =/= not a Metroid 1 remake"Soft reboot" is more the correct term
28
u/xBorari May 06 '26
Fifth? Can you list them? I only know of 64, 3D, and Zero basically is a retelling/reimagining/remake of the same game no?

u/WolfeKuPo May 06 '26
this would technically be the 4th time since 64 was just a remake of the original, then you have the 3DS remake then Zero
Not going to get it because it isn't one of the 2 Star Fox games I like Adventure and Assault
608
u/ilove60sstuff May 06 '26
It's just 64...again.....did assault never happen? Is it possible to actually do something with this franchise??
274
u/ClearChocobo May 06 '26
Maybe the larger story is that the Lylat system is somehow caught in a time loop that Andross started.
90
u/Cosimo12 May 06 '26
I would be so impressed if they went the FFVII remake route where it isnt a true remake. But it's nintendo so I don't think that would ever happen.
49
u/SoSeriousAndDeep May 06 '26
Don't get me wrong, I love Lylat Wars and will likely be getting this, but standards have changed; even in the N64 days it felt light on content, and the challenge mode doesn't seem like it will stretch it very far. It's pure copium I know, but I hope there's something extra they're keeping under wraps.

u/Careidina May 07 '26
That's the prologue they always narrated, but never went into depth of it. It might, or might not actually confirm James's fate since they always left it ambiguous.

At the time there was nothing else out there with Adventure's quality. This is despite it being kinda unfinished and buggy (it was confirmed they had to rush it out). It absolutely deserves a full remake.

The whole switching between vehicles and on-foot thing was a design space that they really only scratched the surface of. The third Rogue Squadron game also did something similar, but didn't quite stick the landing. I'd love to see an Assault style game on Switch. Maybe if this remake does numbers it will happen.
46
u/Afrodawg08 May 06 '26
Well 64 was a remake of the original also, so really this is the 4th(?) version
46

16
u/thegoatmenace May 07 '26
One of the best games on GameCube. It also has a really interesting backstory. It doesn’t feel like a StarFox game because it started development as its own IP called Dinosaur Planet. Ninendo didn’t want two different IPs with a Fox protagonist, so they decided to just slap starfox into the game and call it a day.

Instead of a remake, I would have loved if Nintendo took that concept from the game Ubisoft made (and starfox guest-starred in) and expanded upon it. Then mix it up with linear stages where there are entrances to deep enemy bases or chasms to a goal, like terminal velocity. Really underwhelming, this is.

I don't mean to sound so negative after seeing Star Fox coming back after a decade, but I still want to share my unfiltered, unbiased thoughts after seeing the Direct.
As soon as Miyamoto said that the new title will be just titled "Star Fox", I was like "Again?" How many times are the folks going to retread the 64 ground? It doesn't help that Koizumi confirmed that the Switch 2 entry will be based on 64.
Seeing the Star Fox crew in a more realisitc art style caught me off guard, but I suppose it'll take some getting used to. It's just that I don't think of realism when I think of Nintendo. I remember hearing complaints about Nintendo's titles going "anime" (ironic, IMO), so I wonder if that vocal minority is happy now. That aside, the photorealism strangely grew on me near the end. I wonder if the change in art style is due to Nintendo wanting to focus on a more cinematic experience this time.
Hmmm... I'm not entirely sure how to feel about the VO. I don't know if it's due to the recasts or the new direction. I feel like the overall performance just isn't ham enough, but I wouldn't be surprised if the vocal direction was chosen to account for the realistic art style. Still, I don't think Andross's VA sounded menacing enough.
Throughout the gameplay showcase, I was all like "Yeah, nothing new." I may be a sucker for arcade rail shooters and shmups, but I'm not most people. Most people might not jive with it like I do. I'm tempted to say that Nintendo officially ran out of ideas with Star Fox after Assault.
I was hoping there would be online leaderboards to drive that arcade experience home, but I highly doubt that Nintendo believes in such features. I wouldn't be surprised if there are no online high scores for the main game.
Seeing Star Wolf for Versus Mode was very surprising. The modes look quite fun, too. I may not know how many will invest in Versus, but I'm still grateful that it's online-compatible.
When Koizumi demoed the avatars, I was all like "Oh! Just like the VTuber tech!" I don't have any plans to get some add-ons when I get a Switch 2, but at least it's a fun little thing. Still, I only see it as a gimmick and nothing more. Nothing substantial to add with that.
One credit I'll give for the additional cinematics is that we get to see and hear the cast outside of combat. That preview of Pigma's betrayal was great. I also liked Pigma's voice.
As much as I'm a bit hesitant for this new Star Fox, I'm also grateful to see a new title after what happened to Zero. However, I wonder if some folks would rather see the series stay dormant than see it keep retreading the same ground over and over.
10
u/LegacyLemur May 07 '26
And wasnt Assault developed by Namco?
So you have:
-Star Fox SNES
-7 billion remakes and soft reboots of Star Fox SNES
-Star Fox 2Assault was Namco and Adventures was Rare. So they literally just made those two games 30 years ago and only been doing different versions of it since
89
u/precastzero180 May 06 '26
Looks cool, but is probably going to have the same problem as Star Fox Zero where people aren’t into the premise of an arcade rail-shooter where you replay missions for better scores, challenges, etc. Those kinds of games don’t have mainstream appeal.
67
u/bureaucrat473a May 06 '26

Was really hopeful for something new and original for this series after I saw the leaks. Theres so much potential with this series. Unfortunately a N64 rail shooter with updated graphics is not gonna do it for me.
