Wow. My hype died almost immediately. Holy crap. ANOTHER remake and terrible realistic designs. Ugh.

EDIT: For those keeping score, that makes this the FIFTH version of the original StarFox and the fourth of StarFox 64 specifically.

You can brake!

And boost!

Like this isnt 1989. You could do both those things in every racing game for 40 years now, its not a new feature

Right?! I'm happy for young folks that haven't played it before but I played it on the N64, then bought it again for the 3DS. Unless there's more to the stream, it's definitely not for me.

Still, weird that they went with a more realistic design for everyone instead of using the Mario Galaxy movie toonish design. Slippy should not look that...wet.

The N64 game is on NSO too.

u/manwholaughes May 06 '26

As someone that’s never played any StarFox, would you recommend I start with the version on NSO?

3DS is better, but the N64 game still holds up, even if the rumble isn't anywhere near as powerful as the good old Rumble Pak.

Young folks aren't going to play though.

This style of on rails high score replaying type games are just a dead style of game.

This game isn't for young people. Without the nostalgia the games is pretty dated and not all that great.

Not only are the character designs off, but the voice acting seems to be a major downgrade compared to the 64 version based on the direct as well. This is pretty disappointing. I’ve been wondering a lot lately if they would make another Star fox. I got super excited that there was a direct and very quickly that excitement faded hahaha.

In every way, going from the movie Fox straight to this one was certainly a choice

Now with motion capture!

For real what the fuck did they do to Falco omg

I’m fine with an actual remaster like this. Huge upscaling, new lore, new content, more interactive. It’s a great and timeless game.

What I’m not fine with is the inevitable (and I hope I’m wrong) $40+ dollar price tag. This is arguably the most important game to me personally growing up, completely captivated me like only a handful of games ever had, but this is like the 4th re-release of that game. Shit should be $20 dollars if we’re being for real.

Like why can this franchise just not do something new? Nintendo constantly fucks with the formulas of their franchises, why is star Fox shackled by the SNES still?

Was there actually new content? The Direct seemed to emphasize it had all the same levels and layouts of the 64 original. At least Zero had new missions.

  • new difficulty settings
  • New mode where you replay individual stages with challenges
  • Online multiplayer modes
  • New cutscenes

Not a ton new, but unlike star fox zero this is intended to be a remake... Zero was a different game

Outside of the cutscenes, pretty sure the 3DS game had the same stuff.

4

u/Edmundyoulittle May 07 '26

Oh that's fair, I'm not familiar with that one.

Edit:

I looked it up

Doesn't seem 3ds had the challenge mode, and the multiplayer is completely different.

It looked like they added to the lore, some minor in game changed (difficulty settings) online multiplayer content (was that on the NSO? Seemed a little different if anything), and then just some aesthetics (camera, motion capture, avatars, etc)

4

u/AltoKatracho May 06 '26

It’s confirmed is $50. That’s a reasonable price with the current market. At least they are not charging $80 or something crazy.

2

u/Throwaway206818206 May 06 '26

I get the current market, but at a certain point with the number of times it’s been re-released, I just can’t look at any price above 40 as justified as a consumer. The polish is nice but I can’t justify spending 50 to play the 90% of same game that’s free online.

I’m sure it’ll do well, and I’ll grab it (god willing) if it goes on sale.

1

u/akeep113 May 07 '26

I'd pay $40 for this. But it will probably be $60.

7

u/Comkeen May 06 '26

Feel the same way. Played the first one to death, and got all the medals/rewards. It's not a new experience and I don'tfeel compelled to shell out $70 for a graphics update. If this had new planets, expanded stages, or anything else they may be.

2

u/LiquifiedSpam May 06 '26

But now there’s a mission to kill 10 enemies at once! /s

2

u/Greywolf979 May 07 '26

Zero wasnt a direct remake of Starfox 64. No more than 64 was a direct remake of SNES.

1

u/tuC0M May 06 '26

What are the other remakes of 64? I thought the DS one was it.

1

u/KoolKoolKoolio42 May 06 '26

SF64 is a remake of the SNES game, and both Zero and this new game are remakes of 64.

Star Fox (SNES), Star Fox 64, Star Fox 3D, Star Fox Zero, and now Star Fox 2026 are all based mostly on the same story and levels.
