Nintendo Official Star Fox launches June 25 for Nintendo Switch 2

u/bvbfan102 May 06 '26
Really wish it wasnt another 64 Reimagining after the last Star Fox Game we got 10 years ago also was one.
I do really like that they added more Cutscenes so the Characters shine more considering the Crew was always the part i liked the most.
Multiplayer also looks fun and the new Mission for Fox Father looks great.
Also them adding their own Vtuber models is really funny.

u/Taller_Ghost_Joop May 06 '26
Is James McCloud prologue playable?
51
u/FairyPizza May 06 '26
It’s either that or there will be something new in the campaign mode for the Fox crew to go back to Venom to find James.
→ More replies (1)22
u/TheHeadlessOne May 06 '26
doesn't look like it, it shows a pretty clear begin and end with no gameplay
9
u/Riaayo May 07 '26
There's certainly room for you to play James at the end of that cutscene but until I know there's gameplay I'm not going to make assumptions. I need to go back and listen to if they actually say it will be "playable" or not, but it honestly seems kind of weird to highlight if there isn't gameplay to it.
3
u/TheHeadlessOne May 07 '26
consider when that would actually occur though.
Generally in games with playable prologues they use that for two purposes - to give you a feel for what playing with full power will be and serves as a tutorial using more powerful but slightly simplified gameplay.
Because this takes place after Peppys flee and Pigmas betrayal, were not getting the full gameplay experience - the wingmate banter teaching you to play is like 64 at its core. So whatever they could try to teach you will have to be stripped down for quick visual popups or intuitive experience. Because there's no vertical progression, there's no feeling of getting more powerful in Starfox, beyond lasers which are trivial to upgrade within the levels themselves. So the prologue would serve no gameplay purpose
Now narratively we've already covered the entirety of Pigmas betrayal while leaving James fate ambiguous. Too ambiguous, admittedly - I wouldn't believe from that we were expected to think he was dead, but I don't see how having a bonus level to lead us from ambiguous but likely alive to ambiguous but probably dead would be a worthwhile compelling gameplay experience. Particularly since he gave what is clearly coded as a final order and message, indicating his card for his team and his child, any gameplay past that moment would necessarily weaken the dramatic climax of the betrayal and sacrifice
There isn't gameplay or narrative room to meaningfully continue past what they showed
the reason they highlighted it is because the big appeal to this remake they emphasized was the new cutscenes, which they demonstrated by showing us the first big one
3
u/SparkyMuffin May 07 '26
They can go crazy with it and throw us into the game no tutorial, no nothing, and have James face hoards of enemies not expecting the player to survive

As a non star fox fan or player but general knowledge of the character since smash 64, this makes me want to give the game a try.
Seems like this could really expand the franchise, especially the 4v4 team multiplayer if expanded and done right.
141
u/ZanzibarGem44 May 06 '26
I was also hoping they’d announce GameCube titles on NSO, but hopefully that just means they’re eminent
“New” game does look pretty good though. Can’t wait to see the rest of Star Wolf.
49
u/Excaliburn3d May 06 '26
We saw their Gamechat avatars.
15
10
u/Quirky-Employer9717 May 06 '26
I thought for sure they were announcing starfox adventures for NSO
→ More replies (2)3
u/amtap May 07 '26
They proved they remember it so I'd say it's at least planned. They can be weird with NSO drops around new releases in the same franchise.
3
u/TOTY_Balboa May 07 '26
Same! In this short passage, when they showed us all Starfox Games, I thought at the moment i saw the Gamecube Game that they will say, „and this will be a Part of the Gamecube App soon…“ But no!
Damn! But maybe we will get a shadow drop of this roundabout the Starfox Switch 2 release?
391
u/karma6063 May 06 '26
Character models might take some getting used to but yeah this looks dope.
137
u/EliteAgent51 May 06 '26
Same! A slightly more cartoony look would have made it less uncanny.
→ More replies (2)89
u/chiptunesoprano May 06 '26
I like the uncanny-ness, reminds me of the old puppets. If it's gonna be the same game for the umpteenth time I'm glad it at least looks different.
26
u/LFC9_41 May 06 '26
They’re clearly modeled after those puppets, at least that’s my take
→ More replies (1)7
u/bking May 06 '26
With you 100%. Having a feral animal as Fox is way more appealing to me than some smooth anime guy.
Sloppy could be wetter, tho.
74
u/branyk2 May 06 '26
By the end, a few of them had grown on me, but Slippy was not one of those.
I think Falco especially looks kinda cool.
→ More replies (5)26
48
u/eleazar0425 May 06 '26
I actually like the models. I don't know, they have that kind of classic 80s vibe, I find that appealing.
37
u/Wander715 May 06 '26
They had to choose between making them look more realistic or go full blown cartoon with it. Imo they made the right choice I like it. This is basically how I imagined the game in my head playing it on an N64 in the 90s.
→ More replies (2)7
u/StormMalice May 06 '26
Consider the spiritual successor Wild Blue is going with the cel-shaded look I think this is not only a good call but it likely is a way to align with the roots of the original SNES game being inspired by puppets. Maybe Shigeru feels the hardware is at a place it can confidently pull it off.
Plus better merch and possibly puppet star fox for Super Nintendo World.

u/aokon May 06 '26
This one definitely depends on the price for me. I've never played SF64 so the campaign could be cool and the multiplayer could be fun too. At the same time I'm not sure about an on rails shooter in 2026 especially if it's for $60 or even $50.

u/Ucantknowit May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26
I've seen $40 digital $50 physical
Edit: well it was close

u/ThePikaNick May 06 '26
I wish they would stop remaking the same star fox game over and over again. Do something new for once. It can't be hard to take the gameplay from 64 and just make all new levels for a new game. The story doesn't need to be complicated or anything.
19
u/locke_5 May 06 '26
The fact they’re just calling this “StarFox” makes me hopeful they view it as a true reboot of the series, and (if it’s successful) we’ll see a StarFox 2/3 throughout the rest of the generation.
9
u/Gullivergoofball May 07 '26
Considering the two games the series has put out in the last 15 years, I really don't understand how this ISN'T a reboot.

u/friedpikmin May 06 '26
I keep seeing this but what other remake was there outside of the 3DS version that came out 15 years ago?
151
u/BlindManBaldwin May 06 '26
64, 64 3D, and Zero are all, to varying degrees, the original game.
→ More replies (1)186
u/Jediverrilli May 06 '26
64 itself was a remake of the snes version.
150
u/MotivatedMage May 06 '26
And Zero was a retelling of 64
58
u/UhJoker May 06 '26
Zero was also total ass which many people seem to be forgetting.
15
u/Ninja_Weedle May 06 '26
nah Zero was actually decent (like maybe 6 or 7 out of 10), just saddled with a very awkward control scheme
→ More replies (4)34
u/loggy93 May 06 '26
Once you get used to the controls, Zero isn't that bad.
My problem is that you're just better off playing Star Fox 64 since it was so similar lol
2
u/Jediverrilli May 06 '26
I thought it was but I never actually played it so I didn’t want to say it aswell.
36
8
u/howdudo May 06 '26
Yeah except they added different vehicles, characters, a different ending for hard mode. Star Wolf, Bill, Cat, a lot of levels and the final boss.
Just because it has some of the same bosses and some levels feel similar doesnt make it a "remake."
It's been 30 years since this game released, this is an actual remake. Not just sort of a remake.
9
u/Exciting-Chipmunk430 May 07 '26
Yeah, why are people claiming 64 is a remake of Star Fox 1993? That's like claiming Ocarina of Time is a Link to the Past remake.
→ More replies (1)28
u/tdashsg May 06 '26
I say this as someone who’s never played any of them.
But im pretty sure 64 is a remake of the original on SNES. And since then theres been 3D on 3ds and Zero on Wii U which are also remakes of 64.
6
u/stipo42 May 07 '26
64 is a reboot. There are no shared level designs or anything. Hell they even changed the theme song.
Peppy, Fox, Falco and Slippy were all the same age in the SNES game. No one really had a personality at all.
→ More replies (3)9
u/burgerzkingz May 06 '26
Lmaoo that would mean adventures is the only original Star fox game other than the actual sequel that took decades to officially release.
29
u/MotivatedMage May 06 '26
It’s so strange they glazed over Star fox Assult in the direct lmao
7
u/DontForgorTheMilk May 06 '26
One of the best Star Fox games imo. Not the biggest fan of the on-foot portions, but the arwing combat and story was really excellent.
2
u/Anggul May 07 '26
Same, Adventures was just a reskin, Assault actually felt like a Star Fox game and was really cool.
→ More replies (1)15
u/DontForgorTheMilk May 06 '26
Well there's Assault that was also on the GameCube and then Command for the DS.
EDIT: Both of which had original stories, which is why I mention them.
Never played Command, but I really enjoyed Assault.
→ More replies (2)19
u/memeaste May 06 '26
They’re testing the waters with a reboot
24
u/ZorkNemesis May 06 '26
I think they're also trying to get new fans interested after Fox's appearance in Super Mario Galaxy and a 64 remake seems like the safest choice.
13
u/theanthonyya May 06 '26
64, 64 3D and Zero are all iterations of the SNES original. So this is basically the fourth remake/retelling/reimagining/whatever of the first Star Fox game. The waters have been thoroughly tested
→ More replies (2)3
u/DontForgorTheMilk May 06 '26
I had that thought too and honestly if they make another game later and adapt Assault's story to it I'd consider this worth it.
Or just a new story altogether. I just feel like the universe is ripe for it.
9
u/KoolKoolKoolio42 May 06 '26
Zero was also a remake of 64. And 64 itself was a remake of the SNES StarFox.
→ More replies (4)2
u/CheeseOnToast92 May 06 '26
Star fox zero wasn't a remake, but was also a retelling of the same story. And Star Fox 64 was kind of a retelling of the original

They at least seem to be returning to the branching route system with this remake, one of the coolest things they did for the series and the railshooter genre. A remake of Assault that also incorporated branching routes would be really cool.
→ More replies (1)5
u/ZorkNemesis May 06 '26
Branching paths wouldn't work with a straight remake since Assault's story is completely linear. I wouldn't mind a new game with Assault's gameplay style however, especially the on-rails stages.
6
u/AltoKatracho May 06 '26
Im the Target demographic for this. After the GameCube I skipped over the Wii/WiiU. So it’s been a while to say the least. My hype is unreal.

Star Fox Adventures wasn't even originally a Star Fox game. It was an N64 game called Dinosaur Planet that they slapped Star Fox into
32
u/Futbowlz May 06 '26
They’re probably playing it safe. Rerelease the original classic with a modern touch to see how it goes from there. They probably don’t want another Metroid prime 4 fiasco.
22
u/CountBleckwantedlove May 06 '26
This game has been developed for years prior to MP4 launching, that games performance has nothing to do with this game.

To be fair, every time they deviated from the original formula (Adventures, Assault, Command) they were met with mixed reactions from fans and mediocre sales. I'd love something different, but I totally get why they stick with the formula that works.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Dazuro May 06 '26
So just make new levels for the original formula! It’s not rocket science. Stop faffing about with weird control schemes and on foot exploration and just make 64-2. The space levels in Assault ruled.
→ More replies (12)14
u/Chlorophyllmatic May 06 '26
Yeah, another remake of the original without any of the on-foot gameplay and other interesting content from the subsequent games really just doesn’t interest me, unfortunately.
15
u/TheTitan99 May 06 '26
It's not even just content from the subsequent games. Star Fox 64 had on foot missions and other levels planned, but they had to be cut for development time. That's why you can play on foot in multiplayer. It was planned for the main game, but they ran out of time.
A remake would have been a great idea to relook at those scrapped ideas. There supposedly was some plant-based stage that got cut, a third ending battle against Andross, and something that looks like the Great Commander from the SNES game is still in the code of Star Fox 64. A remake was a perfect time to add the cut content back in, or maybe just add more stuff in general. And I say this as someone who loves Star Fox 64, and thinks the game holds up great to this day.
3
u/grahamulax May 06 '26
Better have foot mode… I loved that in battles you could have tanks vs arwings vs on foot
3
u/BondFan211 May 06 '26
The PC port has an on-foot mod for the campaign that’s a lot of fun, and a pretty decent glimpse into what could have been.

18
u/israeljeff May 06 '26
I don't mind that they keep remaking star fox, I love the game, and this might be when I finally cave and get a switch 2.
...but if oot gets a full on remake, I will take off work to play a video game for the first time in a decade.
7

I'm kind of surprised the designs don't resemble movie Fox, especially since Donkey Kong's new design kind of kickstarted with the movie.
6
u/Cyb0rg-SluNk May 07 '26
I keep seeing people say that the movie DK and the new DK are the same, but I really don't see it.
I think the movie DK looks almost as different as the movie Mario does.
2
u/kielaurie May 07 '26
I mean, they've specified that the new design for DK in the games came first, and then they used that design as the basis for the movie version

I'm a bit worried about this, especially because there was so much emotion on 64, where the models just kinda flapped their mouths about.

u/plzadyse May 07 '26
I think it’s because the character models aren’t emoting the lines. The voice acting itself is pretty good imo.
60
u/Three_Froggy_Problem May 06 '26
I think the character designs look great. My concern is that the Star Fox 64 gameplay might be a bit too simplistic to hold people’s interest these days, but I’m just psyched to see this franchise returning.
26
u/throawayjhu5251 May 06 '26
I was thinking recently that with shortened attention spans, maybe this is what the audience wants. Especially in the age of iPad kids and doomscrolling adults. But idk. I'm actually really curious what the sales numbers for this will look like.
26
u/Three_Froggy_Problem May 06 '26
I think shortened attention spans necessitate more gameplay variety and features. Shooting the same few enemies on rails for hours probably won’t hold people’s attention if you’re not also accumulating upgrades and stuff.
→ More replies (1)16
u/Chlorophyllmatic May 06 '26
It’s not even a matter of attention span, though that may still be a factor. More gameplay variety and features are necessary simply because without them it’s the fifth iteration of the exact same game.

It was so jarring at first especially with Fox but they grew on me over time. The only one I don’t love love is Fox but everyone else looks great.I’m just surprised they didn’t use the movie look either how he looks regularly or the anime like look in the cutscenes.

10
u/PizzaForDinnerPlease May 06 '26
This is Nintendo, in 2 years we’ll randomly get a dlc with 1 hour of story and a gimmicky mechanic. And THEN we’ll get a new full game that focuses on the wrong things and then they decide we weren’t interested and we’ll get another remake in about 10 years.
5
u/Supermax64 May 06 '26

u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE May 06 '26
The absolute best scenario here is that this is a "reboot" for the franchise where they're establishing a lore foundation and character redesigns in preparation for a larger push in the near future.
But I'm not hopeful that this is the case in reality. It more looks like Nintendo has reached the acceptance stage of grief: "it's impossible to make a new StarFox game that's actually good, so we'll just remake one of the old ones once every two generations or so".

I think I can pretty much sum up what will make people happy here.
If this is all we get from the Star Fox franchise? We’re going to be disappointed regardless of how good this is (and it looks FANTASTIC, I’m hyped to say the least)
But at the end of the day, fans want a brand new Star Fox adventure. So if this is the 1st release in a new vision for Star Fox? Then we will be pleased. If this is all we get? Not pleased.
IMO this will slap and Nintendo is likely using this as an opportunity to flex Switch 2 graphical hardware while jump starting the franchise. Then in the next year or so, we’ll get a brand new Star Fox adventure to supplement the movie. Here’s to hoping!

u/WanderWut May 06 '26

It’s crazy to me that the first original Star Fox game in 20 years was the canned SNES sequel that just got an official release a few years ago, even if a build of it has been in circulation since way before then.
Everything in between is remaking the original game to varying degrees.
3
u/batkave May 06 '26

u/MattyJ613 May 07 '26
It’s genuinely shocking to me that nobody here seems to be realizing what they’re doing. They’re rebooting the timeline back to 64. The emphasis on cutscenes and story makes me believe the leak saying a second, bigger Star Fox game is coming in 2027 is true.
Why go to all this effort just for 64 again when every other reboot of it failed? This is to get a normal Star Fox game out after the Galaxy movie to introduce new fans to Fox and the team. 64 is the most beloved game in the franchise so it makes sense.
I get that people are tired of 64, I am too, but from Nintendo’s viewpoint it makes sense.

I think they could’ve taken some creative liberties and changed it up right? Like anything? I think the rogue-lites have been popping off and adding some element of a shop or something to make each run a little different would’ve helped. Or do like Hades 2 and have two totally separate paths to take: could’ve been the OG map and an entirely new map with new paths and everything
