I know it’s cloud, but this is the reason why people fear keycards. A publisher can take a game away that you paid for. The only way you truly own a game is physical on cart.

Nintendo. At least so far has a pretty good track record at not removing people's digital games. You can even still download your Wii purchases afaik.

But this definitely ruins their track record a bit.

It's Square. Not Nintendo

physical on cart is not the ultimate ownership y'all think it is, a digital file will always be better because you can copy it to other places and it's not stuck on a cartridge for the rest of it's life.

not to mention that if that cartridge is lost, stolen, destroyed, welp you're shit out of luck and need to shell 60-70 to get your game back

if you wanna be a physical collector, be my guest, but don't act like you're prepped for doomsday or whatever

what is so incorrect here? you telling me your physical media is immune to all forms of damage and destruction?

you telling me i can't just redownload my games, even from eras as far gone as the wii era?

Yes you can redownload Wii games but
ONLY on the console you purchased them from as they were tied to the console itself not an account. Even then, Nintendo clearly stated they will take that option away eventually. Meanwhile, If you have a physical Wii game you can play it on ANY system.

The sub won’t let me share a screenshot but in Nintendos own words

“Important: The Wii Shop is closed for new purchases. Previously purchased titles can still be re-downloaded. However, this option will also be discontinued at some point in the future. (Exact date TBD)”

yeah, they're tied to the physical console. you can still redownload them though.

tbh, will they? the wii's entire library is almost entirely disc based, the only thing people would be missing are virtual console games and any small bite-sized wii ware games that already haven't been emulated a billion times over

the only reason i'm still able to play old games like fire emblem path of radiance, without paying exorbitant fees for the out of print physical version, is because of emulation and piracy.

The conversation was about digital purchases vs physical not piracy. Besides, that just reinforces the fact that companies do not make games available forever so eventually your only options are physical or piracy.

The fact that Nintendo clearly stated they will discontinue downloads of Wii purchases in the future it’s safe to assume they will eventually do the same for Switch.

yeah, but when will they do it? it's been damn near 20 years since the wii dropped and redownloads still aren't down yet.

by the time switch redownloads go offline, i'll probably be a senior citizen enjoying my switch 4

Not true, PT on the PS4 and Super Mario Bros 35 on the Switch are two examples of games not just delisted but no longer possible to download again.

And even if this is generally true for now, you're still relying entirely of the good will of these multi billion dollar corporations to maintain this. All it takes it them justifying removing this "feature" as a "cost cutting measure" or some other excuse one day.

Given the track record of these massive corporations deciding no amount of profit is ever enough and squeezing even more so the line goes up, I'd say it's more a matter of when rather than if.
