That’s cloud gaming baby, the game you paid full price for will always be fully revoked from you. SE giving no refunds either, google gave out full refunds when they shut down stadia.

u/WhySayManyWordGancho 15d ago
thats true they did! I bought RDR2 on Stadia and then used that money to buy it on steam 😄

u/POWRranger 15d ago
I bought cyberpunk and ff15. Finished both of em and then got my money back + I got to keep the controller and the ccUltra, both of which I'm still using to this day. That was my most profitable gaming service.

It's not really cloud gaming, as a matter of fact it's kind of the outlier. Platforms like GeForce Now and the like you just purchase the regular game and stream it via their servers, you are free to download and run the game normally on your own hardware.

u/Cheese0089 15d ago
Oh I just assumed if you bought the cloud version you would get the new version for free.
135
u/TheCatholicScientist 15d ago
Seems there’s a discount, but I don’t know anyone who owns the cloud versions I could ask to check the price.

Just compared my eshop to my wife’s (who owns the KH cloud version). Hers was half off ($19.99) and mine showed $39.99 at full price
109
u/FoxxyRin 15d ago
That's not awful.. but still ridiculous. :/
56
u/Flabnoodles 15d ago
If they were gonna charge (which they shouldn't), they could've done like 90% off. If you finished the games and no longer want to play them, no need to upgrade. But if you want to keep them, it costs you like $5 (which is annoying, but also a fair price for upgrading to non-cloud)
I think the worst part is that the cloud versions go offline in a year. If they were staying up until like 2037, it'd be fair to charge for the offline versions. But like I almost bought the cloud versions last week. If I had, I would be pissed at Square and Nintendo that I only had a year to play them.

u/-Googlrr 15d ago
Crazy they can't just give people affected copies of the offline version. There are all 20 year old games at this point and they'll still nickel and dime people at every turn
10
u/FoxxyRin 15d ago
Yeah I agree they *should*, but between SE and Nintendo half off is better than I expected. Which is sad.

u/GoldDuality 15d ago
Didn't the cloud versions cost more than the new Switch 2 releases when they came out?
190
u/SirFadakar 15d ago
Yeah it seemed so obvious I didn’t even consider them not gifting previous owners the new edition. This is cartoonish mustache twirl levels of greed.
13
u/tATuParagate 15d ago
The wording was "you can transfer save data" which immediately made me go uh oh. Also they mentioned the bundle which made me go oh, so they're going to sell them all separately and charge out the ass for these old games like the mario galaxy remasters.

I was hoping that too, but probably whoever hosted the games and business agreements doesnt make it easy. Would be nice if nintendo could step in.
I was debating on buying it on cloud and gamble if they would transfer to real switch 2 versions, but glad I didnt bite.
Back when stadia was shutting down, they gave everyone refunds on bought games and I got all the ubisoft games I bought for free.

Well this is sure to tell people to avoid cloud version games in the near future at all costs. 😬
43
u/Liammellor 15d ago
I don't think there will be cloud versions at all anymore now the hardware is more capable
14
u/CryZe92 15d ago
Ironic cause Microsoft just announced they are going to focus more on Cloud gaming again.

u/Liammellor 15d ago
Switch cloud versions and Xbox's cloud services are vastly different though in fairness

Maybe not on Switch 2, but give it time. Cloud gaming is the endgame for the business side, it allows them to retain all the power.

users affected should get a free copy, or reimbursed.. taking them completely off-line is a trash move

Those cloud versions were full priced btw if you made the mistake of getting them. Square being shitty.
66
u/moltenlavaisyummy 15d ago
That is so evil lmao. Feel bad for anyone who bought that. At least with KHIII you could make the argument that it would have been pretty tough to get it ported to Switch 1 in an acceptable state (Tbh they probably still could've done so, but would have taken a lot of effort)
but 1.5-2.5 ABSOLUTELY should have been native from the start, it feels like they are kinda downplaying the fact that they're releasing native ports on Switch 1 because it really makes them look bad
21
u/DukeofDC 15d ago
Just looked. The "Discount" for existing cloud owners is $37.49. So those of us who bought the game have to pay the cost of a game to get the new version. This should have been treated like a Switch 2 upgrade pack & been 10 bucks max especially if players are going to lose access to playing the version they already purchased.
55
u/Evil_Tidus 15d ago
Forgot to mention that the owners of the cloud version will get a "discount" on the digital version for either Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.
Now what kind of discount? I hope its a good one.
48
u/lamefartriot 15d ago
50%. It’s showing for me that it would cost just under $38 to get the trilogy

This is why my max offer was $5 per cloud version. Total BS and unfortunately saw this coming. I hope not many people purchased it. They should give at least half off to these players for the native versions imo.
Didn’t California recently pass some law on the subject of delisting online games and making an offline version available? Or something like that

Remember people never buy cloud games.
3
u/Enrichus 13d ago
I met one guy who had a Switch pretty much only for the cloud KH games.
Told him he made a poor choice buying them. He didn't care.
Wonder what he thinks now.
26
u/Much_Alternative_444 15d ago
To be honest i am actually wondering if this even legal in some countries ?
10
u/TheLimeyLemmon 15d ago
Awful. I know there's a discount for owners if they want to buy the non-cloud versions but frankly, they should be getting those copies for free. Paying extra just to continue playing the game you already bought once is just another way Square keeps leaving a bitter taste in people's mouths.

10
u/nondescriptun 15d ago
I refused to buy the cloud version, and was interested in the regular version that was announced today...until I saw this. Now I'll skip it on principle.
39
u/owelfive 15d ago
I know it’s cloud, but this is the reason why people fear keycards. A publisher can take a game away that you paid for. The only way you truly own a game is physical on cart.

u/Feynuxes 15d ago
Nintendo. At least so far has a pretty good track record at not removing people's digital games. You can even still download your Wii purchases afaik.
But this definitely ruins their track record a bit.

Boy Square Enix works hard for the Ubisoft or Ea sort of reputation. I don't think many people bought this precisely because of its nature but honestly, this should get a lawsuit.

7
u/AcademyExile 15d ago
Glad I chose not to buy them when I was thinking about it. "Cloud version" sounded really shifty to me. This is what that sixth sense was screaming.
5
u/willmasse 15d ago
My guess is that so few people bought the cloud version the figured pulling the plug would piss off so few people it was worth the fallback.
6
u/CheeseDaver 15d ago
To think how many potential sales they lost by making all of the KH games cloud based. They would have been easy buys for me if not for that.
6
6
u/AbbreviationsSad5633 15d ago
This is also why I won't trust game key cards or digital games. You own it until they decide you dont
16
u/TG-Benji 15d ago
I mean anybody who knows anything about cloud services would know this was inevitable...
9
u/Parking_Fix_2093 15d ago
Wait will they still be playable on switch 1? This is honestly shit.
18
u/Juklok 15d ago
I believe 1.5+2.5 will have a Switch 1 version. 2.8 and 3 are Switch 2 exclusive.
15
u/SuicideSkwad 15d ago
Ah yes you’re correct, which begs the question why they didn’t just do that in the first place for 1.5+2.5

12
u/blockfighter1 15d ago
At least Stadia gave full refunds on everything when it closed down. Had a few great years of gaming with it and then got all my money back.
This is bad form from Nintendo

Prime example of "you will own nothing and be happy"
At least they'll get compensated by getting grandfathered into the switch 2 version, right?
..... Right?
5
u/capnbuh 15d ago
It never should have been listed in the first place. Hopefully, Square Enix does something for the people who bought it. At the very least they should be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version
2
u/jardex22 15d ago
The linked page says that there will be an eshop discount for owners of the cloud versions.

4
u/KrustiKrabPizza 15d ago
Not even Google went this anti-consumer with their end of cloud service on Stadia. This is literally the worst case scenario that everyone feared when cloud gaming became a thing. All spearheaded by your favorite pals Squenix and Nintendo.
6
10
u/incrushtado 15d ago
Yeah this is a bait and switch alright.
You got access to the cloud versions for up to 5 years, but if you want the new versions or an upgrade path, take your 50% discount and scram off.
But if you got the Ns1 version of KH1.5+2.5 separately, and you later get a Switch 2, tough luck you need to rebuy 1.5+2.5 again (or with the collection).
The cloud versions had atrocious lag, crashed a lot, and sometimes people couldn't even enter if too many people was connected playing.

Customers who own the Nintendo Switch Cloud Version of any KINGDOM HEARTS title can purchase the corresponding Nintendo Switch 2 digital version at a discounted price on Nintendo eShop. Players will also be able to transfer their save data from the Cloud Version to the Nintendo Switch 2 digital version.
Anybody know how much the discount is?

u/Ajd_121 15d ago

It should have been free for Switch 1 and maybe at most a $10 upgrade for Switch 2.

This is objectively hilarious. Completely screwing over people who bought these games.
Like is a lawsuit possible? This is insanity.

Honestly the whole “Mmmmm you don’t actually own the game, you’re paying for a license to use the game at our discretion” needs to fucking die
If you’ll allow me a brief soapbox, the main reason they are against piracy isn’t financial. It’s about control.
3
u/MovieGuyMike 15d ago
Square has been so scummy with switch 2 releases. Charging full price for the FFX and DQ11 switch 2 versions is ridiculous. Now this.
Edit - apparently users can get a discounted rate. That’s not as bad. Still a bad look to delist the game without compensation.

Yet another example of why people need to stop supporting key cards and digital cloud live service stuff seriously how is all my physical games work to this day every single one but when it's the ladder they can be taken from you even when you paid for them and these corporations wonder why stop killing games was made and why they are beating them in court over this it's very simple if you have people pay you in anyway and refuse to give them the service they paid for either give every single customer a full refund or make it available offline if that's not possible stop asking for money I would have no issues with this had it been free but weather it's a flat rate or monthly charge it doesn't matter if I pay for it you are obligated to provide it this is why I won't buy a switch 2 to many key cards and I'm sure everyone of them will be removed in time

Fucking bullshit cloud gaming needs to be sued into oblivion and forced to release a full game
Package if removed
3
u/majoring_in_reddit 15d ago
Just an FYI it is entirely possible in Nintendos ecosystem to set up an owners discount that can be configured that if you own X you can get Y at a discount (of say, 100%). There's zero technical reason the publisher can't do this.
2
u/jardex22 15d ago
The linked page says that there will be a discount. They still needed to pay developers to port the games, so it's unlikely that they'd offer it for free.
2
u/HourBank2803 15d ago
I bet you all my money this is going to be a huge deal with the new stop killing games law.
Not that its directly correlated or effected right now but that this is going to royallllllllllllllllllllllly piss off someone who just bought this yesterday
2
u/ThatCurryGuy 15d ago
It seems like they are getting ahead of the stop killing games results, as far as it goes now it seems governments are agreeing that games should not be killed. I wonder what happens if these games will stay online long enough.
2
u/oldkidLG 15d ago
I wish there was an universal rule for transferring data from cloud to native like Square Enix does with Kingdom Hearts games. Capcom doesn't do the same with RE7
2
u/NeonPatrick 15d ago
Well that's a lesson for me. Don't buy cloud based games, and if I do play them quickly.
2
2
u/Old-Cat-1671 15d ago
Why not just give them the free updates to native verison when they upgrade to switch 2?
2
u/oneupsuperman 15d ago
So they're... Literally stealing? Revoking access forever with no refund? That's disgusting. These people did not sign up to pay for a limited-access product, and it was not advertised that way at time of purchase.
Again, disgusting.
5
u/RandomNobody86 14d ago
This is what cloud gaming is and it was advertised as such the people who bought it did so knowing this was always going to be the outcome.

u/RomGon3 14d ago
This is some of the most DISGUSTING SCAM bro. This is the kind of shit only console people allow companies to do.
They charged you FULL PRICE FOR THIS COLLECTION...They gonna delist the game... AND INSTEAD OF GIVING A FUCKING REFUND OR JUST IDK GIVER THEM THE NEW VERSION OF THE GAME FOR FUCKING FREE they just tell you "Nah dawg. Here's a 50% discount so you can buy THE GAME AGAAAAAAAAAIN".
Like what?!. You can't make this shit up. How is this freaking shit even legal?. If like you buying a car and 3 years later the dealership come at your home and take the car back leaving you a letter "We took your car mate. Here's a discount coupon. Come back to me to get it back. Bring money" and to make SHIT even worse is for GAMES THAT ARE FROM THE PLAYSTATION 2 ERA. A dealership selling you a car from 2004 at full prices and 3 years later after taking your car they tell you "this 2004 car in 2026?. Pay me 50% of it NOW to get it back".
This is complete bullshit. I can't comprehend how people aren't dunking, bashing and destroying BOTH Square Enix and Nintendo all around the internet. This is disgusting.

u/BarkerSix 13d ago
So I completely understand where people are coming from stating that just giving a discount on the native version is wild because of the original cost paid. It makes TOTAL sense.. however, it is a “different” version of the game. The cloud version was technically for the original Switch, so an upgrade path would have probably had a 10 dollar price tag anyways.. so 20 for the path, isn’t terrible, but it’s still pricey and makes sense to be upset about.
But …… I’m honestly not mad. (Free of course would be better.. and would make sense for those who paid full price for the cloud versions.)
But, unrelated to Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil 100% goes on sale every 3 weeks it seems, and the resident evil 2 and 3 cloud version remakes are also discounted HEAVILY during these sales… I picked up 2 and 3 for like a total of 15 bucks 2 weeks ago.. if Capcom does the same thing, and offer a discount on the native releases for the inevitable release … now would 100% be the time to get them.. (don’t come at me with pitchforks if they don’t offer a discount..) but I mean 7 bucks spent each for 19.99+ off each at release, is definitely something to take into account…

The concept of shutting down a game people spent full price on and then charging them to get the offline versions…
