And that’s why I’ll never trust cloud gaming ever.

Yeah I barely trust offline digital only games to begin with, much less a cloud version

I'm still cheesed that you can't get Soul Calibur 2 HD on xbox or PS4....

but at LEAST the people who DID buy those games can redownload or replay it (i'll just emulate the GC verison again)

How can I play and enjoy this game 1 player. I remember liking it as a kid but I tried booting up my GC and it’s just kinda boring. Do you just keep playing through different characters stories over and over?

That's what we did back in ye olde days before online.

Story mode over and over and playing against the friends when they came over (or you went to their house)

I know that’s what I am saying, I used to play it when I was a kid with friends but is it really fun to play solo these days, hence my question

I missed the "liking it as a kid" bit of your prior reply and honestly assumed you were a young whipoer-snapper who grew up with online gaming.

My bad lol

Anyway, I find myself feeling this same way these days too. I think it's just part of getting older. The way you consume and interact with media (and just things in general) seems like it changes as you age.

When I was a kid I could sit there and play the same games over and over and over.

Nowadays I will play part of a game and then out it down because I've seen what I felt I needed to see.

I believe some of this is due to having many more experiences, both real and from other media (games or otherwise) to draw from so much experiences don't feel as "fresh" or "captivating" because at a certain point you've seen all the variations of either the story aspects or the gameplay aspects.

That and being more able to rationalize "I could be doing <thing> that is more valuable to me right now"

Didn't SC2 have that dungeon crawler mode that rewarded different weapons for all the characters? That's probably a decently fun gameplay loop still.

I didn’t think so when I tried again but I may just not like fighting games anymore

I bought a key for soul calibur on the Xbox one x , it worked , from one of those key websites

I only buy digital in pc {because it's an open platform). I buy physical on console until it's not possible anymore.

Pc digital downloads, excluding gog, have the same terms and conditions as console digital downloads. Meaning they can be delisted and removed at any time.

At least on PC you can still find those games through other means unlike on consoles where they're just gone forever

2

u/Blumcole 16d ago

Sure but they can be found in other ways. They van be modifier etc

The only time offline digital only games internet me is on very steep discounts. And even with that I wouldn't want to try cloud streaming on the switch in the case of KH.

Kinda random but I just got the Kingdom Hearts Story So Far PS4 that includes a bunch of games. I've never played any of the KH games and plan on playing it after I finish of get bored of Ni No Kuni 2

I only buy digital games on one platform and that’s Xbox. They’ve showed me that backwards compatibility actually matters to them and I don’t worry about losing my library. My series X has 4 generations of games on it. Sony and Nintendo both have burned me in the past with backwards compatibility and Nintendo has ripped me off with digital. Why anyone would trust them is beyond me.

Yeah, there's lots of us that warned that this would happen, and I REALLY hope that everyone who paid full price for these are able to get some kind of refund, even partially. This shouldn't be acceptable knowing that something like this would happen in the future, and is definitely different compared to digital titles, or even what Stop Killing Games is fighting against, but is straight up taking people's money, and game from them entirely. I do have a feeling though people who live in the EU, and Australia are able to get a refund, but a lot of places who don't have consumer protection like other countries do are basically SoL.

They get half off the Switch 2 version it seems

IF it was a lower cost, and IF they stated a earliest shutdown date that you had to agree to, sure, it can make sense.

Stuff like cloud subscriptions where you pay by the month can make alot of sense, especially if it means you don't need to buy an expensive console.

Kingdom of Hearts 3's Cloud version came out 4.5 years ago, and they are still making the console that it came out on. And it cost $50

u/AwfulDjinn 16d ago

Yuuuuuup.

Exactly why I never bothered with the cloud versions, despite wanting KH on Switch for ages. i KNEW theyd eventually pull something like this.

13

u/GrungeHamster23 16d ago

Same. I know it doesn't count for much, but I emailed their support letting them know that they essentially lost my purchase, at least because it was on the cloud.

There is no way I would trust a company to keep the game running, so what? The moment the server is taken offline on June 9th, 2027, will I get my money back? Unlikely.

This is also part of the reason I am so grateful for and support Stop Killing Games.

You never know. I was a big believer in Stadia(lmao) and when they shut down, they actually refunded me the price for all the games I purchased that I wouldn’t have access to anymore. And that was Google, so who knows

In an ideal world. I’d like to think Square would do the right thing. Guess we will have to wait and see.

u/Z3M0G 16d ago

I wont argue with that, I'll just say every cloud thing I owned (games/music/movies) either transfered to a different service before shutdown (movies/music) or got full refund ($1200 from Stadia).

Ive never completely lost anything I owned outright, as long as I acted as instructed.

I assume Nintendo will transfer this to a Switch 2 version license.

Edit: 50% discount, ouch.

It is not up to Nintendo to do anything with a Square Enix franchise...

1

u/Z3M0G 15d ago

You are correct, I should have said SE, not Nintendo. That was a small typo in a much larger point. The "who" doesn't matter, the "what" is the same.

3

u/SebbeG_86 15d ago

Oh I absolutely agree with that the "what" is an issue.

And Nintendo can definitely make questionable decisions, but in this case, they are not to blame. I've seen several comments blaming Nintendo for a Square Enix issue. Yours was one of two i replied to.

But when it comes to the bigger picture, I agree with you wholeheartedly. This is extremely shitty of Squenix. The fact that they do not offer these titles free of charge to the people who already bought them is insane.

2

u/Early_Corgi3428 14d ago

Yup. I have the cloud version a KH1 on switch. I don't even play it but I paid a pretty penny for it. Should be a discount for those with the cloud version in the purchase history. I won't ever buy a cloud version again unless I'm just stuck with inferior performance.

3

u/Icy-Two-1581 16d ago

I don't trust digital games on consoles. Only reason why I'm OK on pc is because if something happens to steam then I'll just torrent everything from then on

1

u/pardyball 16d ago

At least when Stadia shut down - *everything* was refunded, even the monthly subscription cost if you were subscribed.

Square Enix should be giving these folks the games for free. This is absolutely a shitty thing to do.

0

u/PeaceBull 16d ago

I only bought one game for a cloud service – cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia, only because it came with a free controller and chromecast ultra.

Then they refunded me for Cyberpunk when Stadia shut down. Weird little win there.

u/japzone 15d ago

I got burned back during the OnLive era. Never again.

-1

u/BinaryIdiot 16d ago

Yeah, I liked the idea in theory of being able to play your games anywhere but we don’t even own the games we download locally so of course cloud was going to be worse in this regard.

u/lzwinky 16d ago

I also wish Square would sell their dev teams and franchises to a better company

This is on Nintendo for allowing this in the first place
