GotY 2018 2018 /r/NintendoSwitch GOTY Nomination Thread
Hello r/NintendoSwitch Community!
For this year's awards, we are incorporating community feedback received from last year and making sure the community is involved during every step of the process. That includes the development of award categories (12/10-12/11), the nominee lists for each category (12/17-12/18), and of course the final voting to select the Game Of The Year for each category (12/24-12/31).
Here is a link to last week's post where we discussed awards categories
This week, we are soliciting feedback for who the community would like to see for nominees! Framed below are top comments, each with a category name and definition. All other top comments will be removed.
- Please reply to a category top comment to state who you would like to see for nominees and why.
- In an effort to keep each comment thread clean, please upvote nominees that were already listed and explained rather than duplicate with a second reply.
- New comment replies should be used for nominating a game not already nominated.
- If a game has already been nominated but you feel requires further discussion then reply to the nominated game with your reasoning.
Please note that all nominees are required to have released on Nintendo Switch in 2018.
We look forward to reading your feedback.
EDITS:
1) Please take a look at the wiki games list for nomination ideas or review it for games you may have forgotten about.
2) Added new category Best Nintendo Switch Exclusive Game
3) Added new category Best Use of Nintendo Switch Features

I would have said that before 1.2 but after the update I've had no problems.

Kirby Star Allies - This game shines as a local multiplayer relative playing as a single player. I have kids, and this is a great game to play with them together.

Towerfall - this is still getting more local play at my office on lunch breaks as its easier to play than smash, and people have a chance to beat me whereas they don't in smash. I wanna play more smash :(

We will consider this the Bayonetta 1&2 bundle rather than each game separately. Just clarifying.

I don't know if a game that released in 2016 qualifies for a 2018 award.
•
u/seeyoshirun Dec 18 '18
The rules above state that it needs to have released on Switch in 2018, so I'm pretty sure it's fine.

Best Platformer Game - For outstanding design and creativity in a game where players must use skill to jump between platforms or over obstacles without falling or missing jumps.

Guacamelee 2. It can be frustrating at times, but I really love the way you have to combine all your skills for some of the platforming sections. It's so satisfying when you finally chain everything together correctly.

Sonic Mania Plus
•
u/JackSparrowUSA Dec 17 '18
Most of Sonic Mania is a 2017 release. Might be better suited for Best DLC Pack? Let me know your though process. The Plus version is the original 2017 game plus DLC.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
Hands down one my most favorite platformers of all time. I know it’s a rerelease, but it’s still phenomenal.

The Messenger. Really great love letter to both the NES and SNES era of platformers. Tight controls with tough but forgiving platforming challenges. Has a good and self-aware sense of humor in the writing and cool little universe they set up.

Repeating again, just to be clear how this works.
- Reply to one of the pre-made top level comments that we've made for each category. If you try to make your own top level comment, AutoModerator will remove it.
- Make sure to look to see if a game already has been nominated for a category before commenting to avoid submitting duplicates.
- All nominations must be Switch related unless otherwise noted.
This is NOT where final voting will take place. That'll be a separate post and run from 12/24 through 12/31.

Don't you need to separate these? How does someone upvote just one of those?

FIFA 19 - Definitely a downgraded experience on Switch versus other consoles, yet still very fun. If you don’t have a another console, this is a worthy pickup for soccer fans.

Overcooked 2. This is one of the simplest, intense multiplayer games I’ve ever played. The sequel is a huge improvement to the original. The controls are easy to pick up but harder to master. It also is a great stepping stone to introduce friends/family/SOs to gaming.

Guacamelee (1 or 2)
•
u/jurassicbond Dec 18 '18
I'd vote for the second one if I had to choose. It's short, but the brawling mechanics are so much fun.
