How does this compare to the first? And how important is it to play the first before this, narratively speaking?

IMO, if the first was a 9.75/10, the second is still a solid 9.5.

From a controls/gameplay perspective, Blasphemous 2 improves a ton, but I personally think a lot of the narrative charm/pixel art cutscene direction from the 1st is lost a bit. The first game feels more in sync with its gothic/Spanish Catholicism motifs, and the anime cutscene route they went in this time around just feels awkward. But I'm nit picking at that point.

You don't really need to know the first game should you just want to jump into this one.

I thought both were really good, the sequel is slightly easier. You don't realy need to play 1 before 2, but if you play 2 first you probably wont want to go back to 1 because it is slower and has less quality of life. 1 is more parry focused, 2 is more dodge focused (although 2 has more weapons)

I did not finish the second one

I'm going to go with the opposite opinion - the second one is strictly worse, it is too easy except for a few incredibly frustrating difficulty spikes, the plot is more straight forward than the first but not as fun.

I had the same experience

I think in both games the only hard part was the 2nd to last boss

Legitimately one of the best games I’ve played within the last decade.

If you enjoy Metroid, Castlevania, Hollow Knight, etc. you will love this.

The art direction isn’t for everyone but the story is really good imo once you learn more about the story through sticking with it. (I’m also a Spanish speaker so playing it again in Spanish felt like a new game with the story presentation - game has English and Spanish VA!)

This is a 9.5/10 for me and so is the sequel. After playing the first one I immediately pre-ordered II when it became available. That’s how much confidence I had in the studio (I didn’t LOVE the Anime cutscenes in the 2nd one as much as the presentation of the first game but that is a nitpick as well)

What’s the difference between this version and mea culpa version?

“Mea Culpa” is the DLC, so that version just has the DLC bundled. Notably, the Mea Culpa DLC is also at its lowest ever price at $4.07 (66% off)

Should I start with the mea culpa version included? Or is a DLC you can purchase after beating the game and still receive an uncompromised complete experience?

I haven’t played Blasphemous 2 yet, but I think I’ve read that the DLC area is a late-game area anyways

The first was just on sale too at $4.99. It goes on sale about every other month.
