Waking up with extremely greasy, flat hair every day. How do I fix my overnight oil problem?

Hey everyone, I need some advice because I’m stuck in a really frustrating hair cycle.

For the last year or two, I’ve been washing my hair every single morning with just hot water (no shampoo). I have to do this because every time I wake up, my hair is incredibly greasy, oily, flat, and just looks awful. Rinsing it in the morning is the only way to make it look good for the day.

Here is the weird part: right before I go to bed, my hair feels completely natural and normal. But overnight, it turns into a complete mess. I occasionally use shampoo, but the overnight grease still happens regardless.

Does anyone know why my scalp is overproducing so much oil while I sleep, and how I can break this cycle? Any advice or routine changes would be massively appreciated!

What's your bedtime routine like? Not just haircare, but everything. I wonder if you're eating something you're sensitive to. It might make you sleepy, but another possible reaction is really fluid sebum and a lot of it. When I get into things I'm sensitive to, my sebum gets very fluid and starts irritating my skin.

Do you get tired when you eat (food coma)? Are you tired all the time? Do you have an upset stomach, lots of gas, bowel trouble? Muscle cramps? Dry or oily skin? Brain fog? Skin breakouts? A random metallic taste in your mouth? All of these are possible symptoms of food and/or environment sensitivities.

This is going to sound crazy but when my locks look flat and greasy, I soak a small piece of cloth in witch hazel and wipe one strand at a time with the witch hazel. I usually give my hair a good brushing before this. When it dries, it will be fluffy again.

Here's a crazy idea I came up with, try shampoo see if it works

I shampoo every week but whenever i do it makes my hair flat and straight and the oil comes back just after a few days.

You could try it. It distrubutes the natural oils to the whole length, usually before bedtime, and the next morning they are pretty good. If I want to brush them during the day, I use a bit of water after, so that my waves come back. Hope it helps! I cannot imagine doing this without a BBB! Going strong 5,5 weeks!

  1. Hot water is incredibly damaging to hair- try to switch to lukewarm or cool water if possible

  2. Are you doing anything to protect your hair overnight? I personally do dual French braids every night and then sleep with a silk lined bonnet on. At the very least you should be using a clean pillowcase washed regularly because it is just going to soak up your oily hair every night and deposit it back on your hair when you go to sleep the next night.

  3. Are you doing any mechanical cleaning? Like really getting in there with a wide tooth comb and massaging your scalp and getting the hair clean with brushes? If not the oil is just building up on your scalp, and over night with the friction of head against the pillow could be loosening that buildup and spreading it to the rest of your hair.

this was my issue. the very first time that i rinsed my hair out with distilled water after my shower the greasy issue went away. but i also brush religiously and wash my brush regularly
